This is the ultimate ryokan experience. A shutte bus picks you up in Kyoto and transports you up the mountains to a world of traditional Japanese houses and spectacular views. The bus stops and lets you off at the end of a suspension bridge overlooking a small river. Cross this bridge and you enter a world that embodies the essense...

stayed in this ryoken for a night. booked room with open air onsen. We took taxi to the ryoken from arashiyama station. It took us about 1500yen to get there. Location: quite a distance from arashiyama. It took us about 15 mins by car to get there. The ryoken is up the hill and in the woods. Room: the room...

From the food to the room to the public bath, I felt completely relaxed. I was able to settle down and reflect on much of my trip. The surroundings were also extremely beautiful and dinner was served on a platform overlooking the the river.

The place is just breathtaking! The ideal place to have rekaxing time with your family. If you choose a room with a private open bath , you will enjoy to be alone and the peaceful place. The time stops around you. During summer you have dinner outside with maiko dances...it was just perfect

We debated between several ryokans in and around Kyoto and am SO glad we chose this one. The trails nearby are gorgeous, the decor is calming, the food is solid, and they even upgraded us to a room with a private onsen. The free shuttle to and from the train station couldn't be easier. Don't spend double on a "luxury"...

We had a fantastic stay here. It's a gorgeous ryokan in a stunning setting, not too far outside of Kyoto, but feels very much in the country. They offer shuttle pick up from the train or subway (if you are staying in Kyoto before, it's really only about a 10 minute subway ride). The place has old elegance, the staff could...

We stayed here a night as a bit of a treat and oh boy, was it a treat! You arrive by shuttle that you organise prior to your stay that collects you from Kyoto. The drive is about 20-25 minutes and is a beautiful drive around bends and up through the trees. You eventually arrive at a bridge that sits...

Stayed here with my teenage son. The annex is down a single track road and the property is alongside a valley in the hills. You access the hotel across a suspension bridge and steep steps. The staff are very polite and welcoming. Excellent Japanese dinner is served in you room by attentive staff, The food was top-notch. Then the table...

This resort is located in the mountainous area of Kyoto. As the name implies, the resort is built next to the river. This makes it a beautiful location for natural lovers. When we arrived at the ryokan, we were dropped off at the wooden bridge. To access the ryokan, you have to cross the bridge over the river. The room...

Staying in Northern Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Northern Kyoto
Hot springs and historic temples characterize the leafy landscapes of Northern Kyoto. Acres of tranquil residential streets are interrupted by some of Kyoto's most gorgeous architectural gems, including the majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji Temple. Once a religious core of the city, the district now boasts some of its most remote and peaceful hot springs, as well as a few of its best family-run mom-and-pop restaurants. A blend of extremely local at its outskirts, and highly peopled at its tourist centers, Northern Kyoto nonetheless retains a halcyon air in harmony with nature.
