The Guest Inn Kyoto was a good place for my husband and I to stay for the short time we were in Kyoto, but there were several problems with it. For one thing- this place is not close to the tourist areas at all, you either need to take bus or taxi (train if your willing to pay), and made...

I came to Kyoto to visit my son who is attending a Kyoto university and stayed here for seven nights. I was given a very clean corner room on the second floor and really liked it. The futon bed was comfortable, as was the comforter. There are traditional Japanese buckwheat filled pillows as well. The room had controls for heat,...

We stayed here for five nights. Our room was very small but cozy and comfortable. It was a Japanese-style room with tatami floor and futon beds. Everything in the room was very clean. The bathroom was tiny also. There was free wifi and heating/air-condition. Our room was non-smoking. The stairs were very steep. The location was pretty good, in a...

I stayed there for 5 nights in october 2016. The room is quite basic, but still cozy. After a long flight I was really happy to fall on my futon bed. Maybe this kind of bed is not made for everyone, but if you are open to it it is great for the money you pay here. The staff was...

The hotel is near a JR station, about 10 min. walking. The room was clean and has a bathroom inside. There's no elevator. There's a laundry and a lot of places to eat and convenience stores near. The owner was very helpful and tried to explain about the touristic places, even her english is not very good. I recommend and...

There is no elevator. The beds are not very comfortable but the room is clean with bathroom inside. There is air conditioned. It is about 7 minutes from the Tambaguchi train station and about 12 minutes from Kyoto Station, so, the location is OK. The price is good for Japan.

a kind and very helpful owner/receptionist, who speaks good english; conventient location near bus stop and kyoto station; rooms tidy, but a little run-down, with tiny bathrooms; efficient air-conditioning; very steep stairs, no elevator; very reasonable prices; residential neighbourhood, quiet and easy going; a recommendable place of good value

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
