First impressions were wonderful for Shiraume ryokan. Location: Excellent! Just along the Shirakawa stream and across a small stone bridge flanked by 2 gorgeous plum trees which have been meticulously cared for many years. It is a gorgeous sight to behold if you have the chance to see them in full bloom. Walkable to many sights in Gion eg. the...

We stayed in the Umekoyomi room with the lovely view of the river. I really love the location of the ryokan as it located in the heart of Gion, walking around at dinner time, I was able to meet a few real Geisha. The room is spacious, the futon mattress and sheets are very comfortable. (size is double for each...

We were lucky enough to enjoy a second 2 night stay at Shiraume in early March and I must admit I was a bit concerned that I had built it up in my memory. I shouldn't have worried as our second stay was as truly wonderful as our first. Our only regret is that we dined outside Shiraume for kaiseki...

Amazing and excellent place to stay. Best of Kyoto and Japan. Location, our room Umekoyomi, views to the canal, breakfast & dinner, baths/jacuzzi, staff hospitality -> just perfect. We enjoyed every minute ! Big Thanks to Tomoko and Satoko who made our visit unforgettable.

Without question, this was the highlight of my week-long trip to Kyoto with my girlfriend. Tomoko-san and her staff have thought of everything to make your stay as effortless and comfortable as possible, and it begins with written directions that you can show to your taxi driver (addresses and such aren't as simple in Japan as they are in Western...

Place/Time: We visited Shiraume during the summer season, September 2013. From our previous accommodation we had caught a train and got off at Sanjokeihan station. With the given map from Shiraume we tried to find the Ryokan by foot, we gave up in the end and caught a taxi realising we had been looking the given map sideways from the...

I did not think that this ryokan could be as good as the previously posted reviews, but it lived up to expectations. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is able to get a reservation. The ryokan is in a very convenient location to the historic district. We stayed in the "Umegae Room", a suite which was spacious for...

Even though I was already very familiar with the high quality of service and courtesy the Japanese society demands, the ryokan still blew me away with their service. Originally wanted to stay for 3 nights but since it was fully booked (mind you this was 2.5 months prior to our arrival) we stayed for 1 night. But it was already...

We have just returned today from our first trip to Japan and I felt it was wrong of me not to write this straight away! My sister stayed here last year and we had the luxurious pleasure of staying for 3 nights this week. I have never reviewed anything in my life but to not would be an injustice to...

We had a wonderful two day trip to the Shiraume. I only wished it were longer but it appears that the vacancies fill up fast, so word to the wise: book sooner rather than later! Tomoko was a wonderful host, giving us fantastic advice about the history of Kyoto and what to do in the city. She was very knowledgeable...

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
