Great Service, Staff, and Stay We stayed here on a two-night stop over between the rice terraces and Dali and were pleasantly surprised. Though the property was nearly empty, common areas were cold, and the lounge was closed, the front desk team helped us to get the most our of our status, went out of their way to overcome the language barrier, and stocked our room with all the little extras that make a nice stay. Special thanks to May and Annie for their help. We stayed in the hot spring suite, which was great. The outdoor pool was super hot, filled quickly, and was in good repair. The room was huge and well-maintained and the bathroom was massive, clean, and equipped with massive tub and rain shower. The pool was lovely as well. The housekeeping staff was excellent too. Breakfast was a little drab and paired down with so few guests, but the noodle and egg stations were more than enough. Kudos to the property to maintaining a solid standard during the C-19 related challenges the country is facing. If we pass through Kunming again the Intercon will likely be our hotel of choice.…
Having enjoyed the experience of staying at this hotel four days last December, we decided to bring the parents and stay for an entire week this year. The service was incredibly thoughtful and attentive day in and day out--little things like delivering us free take away bottles of juice and pastries when they knew we were going hiking for the day. Being that this hotel is located on the western perimeter of Kunming, I can understand why some guests who want a central location may not prefer its location. But for us, we wanted proximity to the lake (and the Xishan / Western Hills scenic area) and easy access to the highway for day trips (Stone Forest, Fuxian Lake, etc.). After all, central Kunming isn't all that amazing and urban traffic is a drag, but lakeside has several spots from feeding the migratory birds to the aforementioned Xishan to wetlands and south to the Dounan Flower market. We found the rooms very comfortable and honestly had most of what we needed. Each night, we slept soundly.…
At a basic level this hotel has some clear strengths - large rooms, nice furnishings, “old” for China hotels of this class at nearly 10 years, but still in good shape. It also has a really grand lobby / entrance area, which at least if you’re me and briefly (not thoroughly) looking into the hotel when booking…seems promising. And I figured with an older suburban location near Dianchi and that resort-like font, it must have great outdoor space too. If you’re coming with a big group and just passing through Kunming, or have some business in this western part of the city…maybe it makes sense. But actually getting here…my expectations were sorely disappointed. First off trying to park our car gave us a taste of this pace - its a maze of buildings as part of a larger complex of a meeting hall, offices of some sort, and other locally branded older hotels nearby. Parking as such on a busy meeting day is a free for all - the actual underground lot may be 50 cars, and the hundreds of others scattered across any paved space they could find in between the buildings. I tried to figure out where the green space would be….and gradually realized it was limited… Walking in you get to see that grand lobby…but after realizing no, it’s not a resort in Bali, you start to recognize it almost feels more like an airport. There are separate check-in counters on each side (one for standard, one for IHG members) and your room is assigned in different numbered blocks (concourses? Terminals?) that you navigate to amidst a number of shops and concessions. Sure, as mentioned the room was quite comfortable and the balcony nice to sit out at night. And we had a good view of a walking path with greenery - definitely different than a center city hotel. I do take off points though for hotels in China in 2021 that don’t make bedside cell phone charging seamless - one plug in a two bedroom room doesn’t work. This is solvable. The location to me ended up being a major drawback - like a resort, there’s little immediately around the hotel….but it’s very much definitely not a resort. Getting to the city center is ~45 minutes in the evening; obviously plenty of clusters of restaurants 10-20 minutes too. Let me be clear - nothing was really “wrong” with this hotel. Kunming is a big volume tourist market, and this hotel works as a comfortable option for groups or business. But as an individual tourist - I don’t get staying here. Either stay closer to the city itself with more in easy access, or get out of Kunming even further and experience real nature.…
I had the great pleasure of staying two nights at InterContinental Kunming as preparations for the upcoming UN Biodiversity Summit hosted by China. The hotel is surrounded by a beautiful garden, and has all the necessary infrastructure and facilities for larger international meetings. The buildings are a little old, but tastefully decorated and from what I could see everything is really well maintained. Everything was also really clean, and I appreciated the mix of international hotel and strong emphasis on local traditions, culture and biodiversity. What truly made my stay excellent, though, was the dedication, care and exceptional service provided by Aiden, their trainee at front-desk. My meeting required a recent Covid test, which was for this meeting not provided by the event organizers. Upon arrival, Aiden had already researched the hospitals, called them about the possible visit of a foreigner and found the best option for me. Then, he helped to book transport for me - and the following day, he helped tremendously to fetch the results from the clinic in time for my meeting. Add that he speaks perfect English, and is also very efficient. I am very thankful and impressed, and I predict a great carreer in hospitality. I also apologize for the extra burden caused. Other highlights were the omelette for breakfast (cooked to perfection both days, so I am over the fact that my vegetarian noodle soup was in fact served without noodles😅), their yoga room with beautiful views to the garden and the even more beautiful music in the lobby bar last night. Room for improvement? Sure. There is no outdoor pool, which is a bit surprising in such a large resort, and the wine selection could have been better. But all in all, I can’t wait to return to this hotel next month for the Summit.…
Big, green territory. Big warm jacuzzi, decent indoors pool with comfortable water temperature. Good service. Great food selection for dinner (seafuud, BBQ, a lot of fruits and veggies, sushi) which is decently priced (below 300 per person). Helpfull and nice consierge. Big Children playground. Much better by all means than Shangrila, where we stayed before. Located 10 mins walk from big lake. 15 mins drive from big theme park (ocean theme, reccomended for families with below 12 ) Only one suggestion for management, if they will be reading it. Please increase selection of cocktails in main bar. Pinacolada and milkshakes are classics. I was surpriced they didnt have coconut milk, which is super common drink in China. Overall great stay!
My family stayed at the IC Kunming for just one night during April 2019 and it was an absolutely terrific stay. I had already completed the IC post-stay review, but feel obliged to complete another review on TripAdvisor to share my positive experience. Firstly, huge thank you to Bobbi Zhang for the excellent reservation process and recognition of my Platinum Ambassador status. Coincidentally, Bobbi was also the one that checked us in to the hotel upon arrival, greeted us and provided lots of information at and around the resort. Special thanks to Smulin Li as well for providing guidance of attractions around Kunming. This was our first ever night in Yunnan so the detailed information was much appreciated. The hotel is beautiful, with a stunning lobby and a garden that you sit around or casually stroll across the bridge. It is located next to the Dianchi Lake, about 10-15min walk around the hotel. The Longmen on Xishan and Ethnic village are all nearby and we went to both of them on the same day. We stayed in the 190sqm Garden Suite which was modern, with a very large sofa and a very large spa bathtub. A children's bed was also nicely set up for my 8 year old girl. The only disappointment was that the pool or hot spring in the backyard had no water in it, apparently due to maintenance repairs. Our Garden Suite was very close to the Club Lounge situated on the south west side of the Resort. The Lounge was split into two sides, spacious and comfortable with a decent outdoor area as well. Both the Club Lounge and Breakfast restaurant offered a wide range of delicious food and snacks. At night, we enjoyed the free drink vouchers in the lobby lounge, whilst listening to a live band. The singers looked like they were from the middle east, but had a good voice and created a lovely atmosphere for guests. Our first ever stay in Yunnan at the IC was a terrific experience and I hope we can come again to stay for longer next time. Sijia…
What a terrible stay here never be back for a Sprie Ambassador. Far away from this hotel. So terrible service Ketty Zhang from the front desk and Chris Xu on duty. Should avoid this two guys! No good experience at all. Should stay at the Hualuxe and crowne plaza, which have a great stay there, not this ic! Or stay at the Sofitel also much better than this intercontinental. What a shame for that!
I stayed there just one night for the 2019 SCO Kunming International Marathon. This is the best location for any races I participated in before! The start/finish line was right at the back of the hotel. It took me literally 8min to get there from my room! Apart from the marathon, the location is also very convenient for other Kunming’s attractions. The hotel is very good. The staff are very professional and helpful. The only problem is a heavy traffic around the hotel. So, allow yourselves a lot of time for getting there from the airport!
It is Located on Dianchi Lake and away from the centre of Kunming. Huge Hotel, with appropriate service, and Plenty of space in the Lobby. The GArden is Great, and on the Clear Night , you can see the stars.
Beautiful hotel whether on business or vacation. Incredibly large and if walking long distances is an issue, ask for a room closer to the front desk. The restaurant staff should be more attentive. The lounge was quiet and not crowded. Despite a nonsmoking policy, inconsiderate guests smoke in the hotel.
