This hotel is tidy and has most of what you want for a hotel. If they put you in B wing ask for and odd-numbered room - away from the restaurant as it can remain quite noisy until late at night. OK I was there during World Cup and it was on the large screen, but best to try the side away from the main area. Breakfast was included and had lots of variety. Reasonably prices at under US$75
EXPO GARDEN is not a bad hotel but its not a great hotel. The breakfast is free or added not sure, but its a bit expensive if you pay for it. Dinner is something like 140 rmb and it certainly a good dinner but not if your going to stay there a long time. It would be well worth it if you ventured down the hill into the little shopping area to find alternative options. The hotel has good tv.. with a few English channels including HBO Asia. The one thing I didn't like is the unenforced rules about smoking in designated areas..the rules are there but they (the people) either ignore the rules and/or they are not enforced especially in the elevators. The hotel does not have a lot of amenities.. and for that its not a good place for children. Staff and service is okay.. and the doors and hallways are not sound proof.. otherwise you can hear the drunk guy or guy on mobile walking down the hallway.. …
In Kunming for business, I had my booking made by our company. If the rooms are well designed, and the bed quite comfortable, I have to say this is not a hotel I shall visit again in the futur. It's almost impossible to find some staff member who could speak at least a little english. During my stay, the outside temperature was quite low. And it was very cold everywhere in the hotel. Impossible to get a decent temperature in my room. The lobby is huge... but empty, no seat, nothing to make you feel welcomed. I had requested a non smoking room during the check-in and I got a room with bed sheets perfumed with cigarettes...
As has already been said in other reviews, the AC is central and is turned off, though the weather is still warm. Yes I'm American, so I tend to run hot. It's 25 or so outside, but much warmer in the fifth floor. Opened the windows at night which had a thoughtful magnetic screen and sleeping was pleasant. But, the rooms are pretty warm. Apart from that, the rooms are very nice and comfortable. The bathroom is open marble and glass with many amenities available. Only one English tv channel. The breakfast was expansive, but don't look for any western items, really. The cook to order Yunan noodle station was delicious! All in all is stay here again. Good value. I'd just look for a cooler season for my stay.
The Expo Garden would be rated 4 stars except for one issue, that is prevalent in China. Lack of English speaking staff... and when I say "English speaking", I'm especially concerned with comprehension or understanding what is said in English. Other than that, its a really clean and good hotel to stay while in Kunming. The famous Expo Garden is right across the hotel and the Exercise facilities are great. Staff is very polite and many use translation apps on their phones so its good to have one also so you can converse.. Enjoy...
Better rooms than the rating and what I had expected. Breakfast too was ok, not enough to select from I'm teens of fresh fruit but what they had was good. Yunnan is the real gem of china, to see kunming, xushuangbanba and surrounding areas is amazing and essential for any tourist. The local people are very relaxed happy and friendly, there's very little pollution and what you see is what you get. Arrange a guide, because if you can't speak mandarin then thus area hotels etc will be difficult and you'll be quickly frustrated and not get to experience the real tranquility. Also, go to the bird and plant market not far from the hotel and expo site, it was just totally amazing!!! Plays there's a huge traditional dance restaurant nearby which us essential. Sometimes you'd be ok to mistakenly think and feel you were in Thailand in this area.…
We had a very bad experience with Yunnan Expo Garden Hotel in Kunming. We enjoyed our stay in March when the main building on Shibo Lu was closed for renovation, and we chose a Queen View room. We tried to check-in at the newly renovated hotel, but were informed (in Chinese) we had to go up the hill to same place as before to check in for this room. We were told breakfast was at 7:00-9:30, but at 7:30 am when we went to the restaurant it was closed and no one was at the desk. At 8:15 when a girl was at the front desk, she couldn't speak any English, but we finally got a shuttle (golf cart) in the rain and ate breakfast at the main building. That night I showed the night desk man an empty roll of toilet paper at 10:00 pm, and he got my room number, but when I went back to find out what happened an hour later, no one was at the desk, and we didn't get a refill of toilet paper. The next day when we checked out, we asked for a Taxi – the girl knew what we wanted, but she kept trying to tell us something in Chinese. Eventually we got a shuttle our down to the main building, bag dropped upside down, and flagged down a taxi to leave Their breakfast was nice, but the old section up ton he hill where we stayed is way past its prime with mold in tub area, rusty bolts on the toilet, Dingy towels, and a general run-down appearance and extremely dim lighting in the room. Also the heating unit didn't work, so we were quite cold in the mornings. If the hotel is going to cater to foreigners, they should have English speaking personnel. Won't stay a 3rd time.…
A lot of positives about the hotel, especially the buffet breakfasts and evening meals. Major downside is that manager refuses to switch on air-con until some upper temperature outside is reached leaving his guests sweating and unable to sleep at night. Check-outs take far too much time and risk missing flights so begin process as soon as you can. There is a fantastic Eco-park directly opposite hotel but guests not provided with any info on what could be a highlight of their stay!
The rooms are really nice, with a balcony overlooking a garden, they bring you a fresh plate of fruit and the bathroom is lovely. The restaurant serves an extensive buffet, but we did not sample it. The beds are hard, but comfortable.
The Expo gardens hotel is situated within 20 minutes of the airport; is close to Yuan Tong Temple and only 5 minutes walk from the entrance to the Expo Gardens. It is however quite a way from the centre of Kunming city. It is a curious place split over two sites; about five minutes walk apart, with an electric buggy running between the two. In retrospect, it is curious because there is little English spoken here and it took us a while to find our way around. For instance, it would have helped a lot to know that the bar, which is located near the reception desk, does serve food and drink throughout the day. There was no one at the bar when we arrived at 1pm and it took us quite some time being shuffled between the two locations before we found it was open and it even had a Western (albeit limited) menu. The barman suddenly appeared from nowhere and turned out to have quite good English, which proved to be quite useful here. This bar incidentally, also turns into quite a lively restaurant in the evenings, offering Chinese a-la-carte and a wide selection buffet menu. You can ask for a western menu for dinner but beware, as you will have to wait a while for a very Chinese interpretation of your order. The buffet is fine. It seems that most of the bedrooms are located at the other site which consists of three story blocks arranged around a very attractive covered courtyard garden. Our room was clean and comfortable, with a separate sofa and, if it were not for a cracked sink, it would be up to good western three star standards. The mini-bar was almost empty, as is usual in Chinese hotels. However, there were three English language channels on the TV. We also had the bonus of a lovely view of the Expo Gardens (well worth the visit) from our bedroom window. Breakfast is served at the Chinese restaurant in the bedroom complex, where a European selection is on offer. This hotel is perfectly adequate for a two nights stay.…
