We stayed in this hotel over the Golden Week holidays. The hotel is in the central part of the city. Most of the places that you would like to visit Kunming are within walkable distance. The subway station is just next to the hotel on the other side of the road. A mall for shopping and a lot of restaurants to eat diverse types of food. The people in the hotel are very humble and helpful, but some of the writings on things may confuse you. I was puzzled by the "Complimentary" writing on the laundry bag. I did know whether the bag was complimentary or the laundry service. It appeared that none of them is. So, a bit of care is necessary. The reception has people (during the day time) who could speak and understand English, so as a foreigner one would not find any difficulty in communicating. The Line 3 tube/metro/subway that runs from the nearest station opposite the hotel directly goes to the Western Hills. I believe this is a big plus for this hotel. If you would like to go to the flower market, take the Line 3 subway and change to Line1/2 in the next station (Dongfang). The airport can also be reached with a change of line in between. Overall the advantage this hotel has due to its location is noteworthy. I opted for a no-breakfast option because there are so many restaurants around that you will regret no having tried them during your stay in Kunming. Negatives: The hotel's gym is terrible. Do not expect anything from there, except for a few weights. The fitness machine is broken. The treadmill is not smooth. That was one of the unexpected disappointment that we had during our stay there.…
Hotel is situated in a very good shopping area with lots of Malls n Eatery. The breakfast is hotel has a good spread and staffs are all very polite and helpful. The bed and pillow is nice but the quit could have been better. Air-conditioning is not very cold but it’s the norm here in China as it is Autumn already and tend towards a cooler weather.
Agree with one reviewer that it’s standard of 3-3.5 star Best Western in Australia if that is a guide. Positives Centrally located, modern shopping centre 300m away, Starbucks next to shopping centre have decent coffee. Comfortable room. Negatives Room on L25 aircon ineffective, mouldy bathroom, don’t think my wife would have stayed. Caters mainly for Chinese breakfast, western breakfast really only cold fried egg, cold bacon, lukewarm tea, stewed coffee, sliced orange pieces drying out, watermelon pieces, obscure cereal. So food not great. Look for Chinese food outside. Pizza, steak in shopping centre good court. Staff did their best and tried to be helpful. English not great. Breakfast staff stand and look and wait. Might be good if they offered hot tea or coffee when you sit down. On reflection I wish I’d look further afield and paid more for better accommodation.…
Great location in the centre - close to the shops. Hotel staff spoke very limited English - less than expected for this level hotel. Rooms are spacious and nice - but our non-smoking room clearly had a cigarette smoke smell inside the room. The breakfast buffet is expensive - though it did not match our taste and the coffee was bad. The doorman should really support guests rather than allowing crooks as taxi drivers in front of the hotel taking advantage of guests with rides to airport without meter.
Just next to a very smart shopping mall with all the luxury trappings. Also near to various restaurants. The rooms are of a classic type of luxury which was wonderful after our journey through remote parts of Yunnan. Good views over town. Kunming has a charming park with a lake with dancers and revellers as usual in China.
Spent 2 nights here and first and foremost, no beating it’s location! Centre of everything. Pop down and there’s food and shopping centers. There’s lots of buses that starts there. The hotel has some floors that are renovated which are brighter. However, we chose the unrenovated suite. It was nice and spacious. Great value for the price and buffet breakfast is included. The buffet had a nice choice of pastry and lots of Chinese selection. The staff doesn’t speak much English but are friendly and helpful unless they don’t understand your request. After spending so much time traveling around in China, I realized that the concierge tends to recommend taking a taxi as they feel your Chinese will not get you from point A to B, like signboards they can only tell you in Chinese and unfortunately you can only read the English signboard whereas they don’t. Highly recommend the hotel for its location and price. However for a more Western style hotel check out my other hotel reviews of Kunming. …
We stayed at this hotel for two nights. The room is spacious and well equipped. The bathroom although a little old ,contain all what someone needs. The breakfast is oriented mostly for Chinese ,so we had only eggs and coffee with some croissant and sweet rolls. in general we would recommand on this hotel specially because it is located in the center of the city.
New Era hotel is a very central place to live in Kunming, the rooms are nice and big and are well maintained, the only shortcoming i found was the the staff very rarely understands English which was a major hurdle but all in all would recommend the hotel.
The staff are very friendly and eager to please. Beds and pillows are very comfortable, the room was modern and clean with an incredible view of the city. Wifi was excellent, good choices for breakfast. Location is excellent whether you want great local food or fries at McDonald's it's all there. Convenience stores and high end shopping.
Location: 5/5 stars This hotel is close to mostly everything. Food, bank, shopping, massage, movie theatre, hospital. Hotel lobby: very dated and needs to upgrade to better interior. Well the surrounding is kept clean though so OK Hotel room: bed and room cleanliness is acceptable on international standard. However, the toilet is the area that needs lots of upgrade. The hardware of the toilet is borderline acceptable and the mildew on the wall of the bath tub is really an eyesore. I can see house keeping did clean the tub and the walls but the fact it is very dated that it is hard for them to remove the mildew stain. One other thing I should mentioned here which the hotel website or any hotel booking website did not mentioned is that, this hotel’s central air-conditioning would only turn on when the outside temperature reached a certain degree. Simply put, if the hotel management feels it is not hot enough outside, then you have no air-con in your room. You can turn on the air-con but no “cold” air will be coming out. For those who are from the North and like to sleep in cooler temperature, too bad, can’t do it here in this hotel. Front desk people and concierge people are both average in customer service. Breakfast: choices of food is not too bad but mostly Chinese food. As you can see from my profile, I have been to many hotels and I think the breakfast here in New Era is acceptable for what I am paying. If you don’t like the breakfast here, you have plenty of choices outside the hotel from McDonald to Starbucks. Overall, I think this hotel is O.K. But really needs to upgrade the interior decor. Well, I speak English, Mandarin, Cantonese and French so I didn’t have any communication problem but I do believe most of these staff do not speak fluent English except for front desk. …
