Basic backpacker hostel run efficiently and strictly by former Peace Corp volunteer. I mean strictly as a complement. The rules are made clear and they are enforced. It ensures a secure, clean, and reasonably comfortable overnight stay at a rock bottom price. The manager kindly loaned us a couple of beers until we had a chance to get out to...

Thanks to Diverdan for his kind words and acknowledgment of the effort that our entire staff makes on a daily basis to keep our hostel clean, safe and orderly. We've already commented in other responses that our only serious concerns are: the treatment of our dog and illegal drug use at our hostel. Otherwise, it is assumed that the majority...

My boyfriend and I stayed here for one night. Defenetly the worst and the weirdest hostel I stayed in while traveling throughout Latin America. Too much purple, too many unnecessary and annoying rules. Andrea, the owner probably means well, but you can't be relaxed or comfortable here with so so many rules and her watchfull eyes. The pillows had a...

ComeToPanama, Owner at The Purple House International Backpackers Hostel, responded to this review

Thanks to Jenny for her review because once again it gives us the opportunity to clearly explain that there are only 2 rules that are strictly enforced here: 1) Please don’t let Cute-si (our beloved dog) out into the street where she could get hit by a car or lost and 2) Please don’t use illegal drugs on hostel premises....

We decided to stay at the Purple House based on Lonely Planet's apparently out of date review of the place. They describe the owner as warm and welcoming, but from the moment we arrived we felt more like troublesome intruders than valued customers. We arrived a couple of hours before check-in time (after taking a night bus from the capital),...

Management response:

This reviewer had a three night reservation that she made 3 weeks in advance. When she arrived, she immediately cancelled the third night because she explained that she’d met someone on the bus who offered her a free home-stay. She was not charged for this cancelled night. After a day of exploring David, she came back in the evening and...

I read a good review of the Purple House in a Moon travel book so I thought I would give it a try when traveling through David. I was traveling with my girlfriend so I wanted a private room. I was considering either staying in the city in a hotel, or in the purple house (which is about 10 blocks...

Thanks to Doug for his review. As he mentioned we had some repair work going on in the hostel on the morning of his departure. Although I don't remember any specific interaction with him asking about tourist information, I can acknowledge that things might have been hectic at the very moment he approached me, and it's possible that I was...

It's exactly what you expect to get from your average hostel. It offers the bare minimum but you get by. If you're looking for a night's sleep in the city of David and that's about it, you've found the right place. The staff is perfectly friendly, the beds are beds, the sheets are clean, the bathrooms exist. It's a good...

Andrea has it very well organized. It is very reasonable and you can tack on extras if you wish. The veranda and outdoor shower "fountain" is where I spent the afternoon during the heat of the day - and I kept cool plus met other travelers. Not fancy but has all the services you could want!

It could do with a new coat of paint (purple of course!) but otherwise it's clean. Andrea runs a good, efficient service with heaps of information about the area. The verandah is a good place to socialise and I met people from many walks of life, including a couple planning to retire on the Azuero Peninsula. There were friendly warnings...

We booked Purple House on Hostelbookers and there was a problem due to Hostelbookers allowing the double room to be booked twice for the same night, so the room was not available for one of the nights. We weren't to fazed and stayed in a dorm the first night, but Andrea went out of her way to accommodate us and...

When we were passing through David we came horribly late at night and would have slept on anything. It was great how nice the staff was, and cute-si the spaniel is certainly cute. Thanks for your kind comments about our staff and Cute-si. Sorry about your experience in the dorm, it sounds like you are referring to our 6 bed fan-cooled room. Since this is such a nice positive review, we would have expected a higher star rating but thanks for your comments and for acknowledging all the nice details about our hostel. Yes, it is hard to avoid street noise in a city as big as David, but we do sell inexpensive earplugs for anyone who is disturbed by the noise....
