For a wedding October 20 - 23, 3 nights, room 7 3rd floor at Stewart House Inn part of Shakespeare on the Hudson. Get some exercise walking up the stairs. I am so happy we stayed here because instead of with our families at the River House on Shakespeare on the Hudson, which was a DIY, laundry, cooking. Informal charming,...

democracy and kindness, comfort and privacy, the most beautiful period rooms, and a terrific bar with great food, are what you will love about the stewart house. the frescos in the huge dining room tell the checkered history of this once racy town....there are not many places where the mighty hudson feels so intimate and IS so accessible. in the...

Fantastic spot beside the river. But one problem. The owner has not employed enough kitchen staff to expedite the kitchen's ability to service the dining area in the Summer. We waited nearly an hour for our food after ordering at a non-busy lunch time in September. We had to make a train back to the city and had to hail...

This is a very beautiful hotel in a stunning location. The rooms are big, spotlessly clean and comfortable. There is quite a lot of noise from the bar but this didn't bother us too much. It's slightly let down by the check in/check out which seems to have been an issue for others too. On the final morning of our...

My friend and I arrived late but were welcome and shown to our room well after hours. The room was very comfortable and well appointed. The building itself is very unique with brass stairs and smooth wood banisters. A reading nook was noted on our way upstairs to the third floor. The house sits on the edge of the Athens...

We dined at the Stewart House's riverside café and bar; Happy Jakes. It was a great experience. We had a riverside table with a nice view. It was a mild mid-September evening and they accepted reservations! The food and service were all good. I had the bratwurst and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My wife had a burger and thought it...

We enjoyed our stay at the Stewart House very much. While the town of Athens is quiet, it has a lot of charm and a very nice view of the Hudson River. The only off putting experience was the 'check in' process, or rather lack there of. We arrived around 11:00 am on a Friday to find the doors locked...

A hotel/Inn that definitely dances to its own tune. Very relaxed and welcoming, but don't expect "normal". On arrival, if no-one is home, don't be surprised, dial one of the two numbers provided, and hopefully a person will turn up to welcome you an show you to your room. The rooms are all individual and homely, with some nice touches....

Absolutely delightful waterside patio restaurant! Stunning view over the Hudson. Magical atmosphere. Fantastic live music. Superb food - Tuscan chicken with garlic spinach highly recommended. Wonderful staff - especially the restaurant manager. Go now. Only open May to September. Best date night ever.

My wife and I recently stayed at this beautiful hotel in Athens. It's a very charming place with a rustic air. Two hours after checking out I realized I left a shirt hanging in the bathroom. I called immediately from the road and sent a self addressed and pre-paid envelope to the hotel. In short, I never saw that shirt...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Stewart House at THE ATHENS HOTEL, one of the grandest hotel/restaurants in the Hudson River Valley, is located in the river town of Athens, NY. (Directly across from Hudson, New York.) Carrying on a legacy that began in the 1883 when it first opened its doors, the Athens Hotel acts as the perfect companion to the Shakespeare on the Hudson Estates (located 2 miles from the hotel), featuring the 11-room "River House", and the 11-room "River Lodge"; located on 90 acres of Hudson River river-front. The hotel itself is able to accommodate up to 18 guests. This architectural treasure has had a complete renovation after being damaged by floodwaters during Tropical Storm Irene during the summer of 2011. Owen Lipstein, the owner of the Stewart House at THE ATHENS HOTEL, has presided over this nuanced, imaginative and critically acclaimed restoration, literally from the inside out. The nine spacious and fully complete guest rooms pay appropriate respect to the Stewart House's historically important past. At the same time, it now features state of the art , heating, cooling and electric. The bathrooms are remarkable, featuring for example, marble tile showers, custom baths and heated towel warmers. These rooms have been carefully been styled for the ultimate getaway boasting large and airy suites, perfect for snuggling up and enjoying the view of the Hudson River. With it respect to its historic sense of place, we can now embrace the glorious present, with a wondrous future.... Re-opened just recently, both the restaurant and hotel have garnered nothing short of rave reviews. As one recent guest put it, "Simply stated, this is the most beautiful place on the Hudson. Stay here, eat here, indulge in a drink at the River Garden, and you will never want to leave." The restaurant has also JUST OPENED. (We have been careful about announcing it.) We can now say this with quiet, but assured confidence: customers from near and far, have left extremely satisfied, happy, and full of praise for our chef and our staff. Each room at THE ATHENS HOTEL is as unique as the hotel's history: some rooms are named after movie productions that have used the hotel as a backdrop, some are named after the surrounding landscape, and still others are named after notable characters from Shakespeare's plays. Each room features spectacular views of the Hudson, luxurious queen-size beds, in-room mini fridges, large flatscreen TVs and brand new, state-of-the-art bath amenities. ... more   less
