Sugar Beach Mauritius enchants many with its luxurious yet welcoming atmosphere, complemented by live music and cultural events. Nestled on a prime beachfront, the hotel offers immaculate rooms with breathtaking views, though some guests find the room size and maintenance lacking. The cleanliness is consistently lauded, as are the extensive amenities such as pools and water sports. However, concerns are raised about the value, with high costs and additional charges for certain services. While the staff's warmth is often highlighted, service speed and organization have room for improvement.

Just returned from a wonderful and relaxing time at Sugar Beach. It was our second visit staying in a premium suite and for those with teens this room type is fabulous as you essentially have a second bedroom and bathroom, the rooms are modern and stylish. I have to compliment our room attendant Houmesh who kept the suite spotless and well stocked. He also went out of his way to put a bouquet of flowers we had into water without being asked. Thanks also to the lovely man who kept our room topped up with water which was very much appreciated, he was always happy to have a chat and made sure our mini bar was well stocked. Our room overlooked the adults/quiet pool which my older teens were able to use without any issue. This pool has the most stunning view down to the sea and was never a problem to get sunbeds at even at half term holidays. Thank-you to Sorab who served us at the pool, you are so polite and helpful making sure we had drinks poolside. We ate at all restaurants at the resort and had wonderful meals at all. Last visit the Magenta restaurant at neighbouring La Pirogue was our favourite however this time Citronellas Italian was top. The service was excellent and the pasta, pizza and bread were delicious! Thank-you once again to the amazing staff at the teens club..all are fantastic with entertaining the teens at the resort, Andrew, Lovyn and Guillaume are an asset to the resort playing games, sports and providing evening entertainment. We will miss you all and hope to be back again.

Dear Angela G, Thank you for sharing such a heartfelt and detailed review of your family’s recent stay at Sugar Beach! We’re thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your return visit and found your premium suite ideal for traveling with teens, offering both comfort and style. It’s wonderful to know that Houmesh and our attentive team made your experience exceptional, going above and beyond with thoughtful gestures like arranging your flowers and keeping your room fully stocked. We're also delighted to hear Sorab’s poolside service added to your relaxation by the quiet pool with its breathtaking views. Your compliments to our staff, from our restaurants to the Teen Club, truly mean a lot. Andrew, Lovyn, and Guillaume will be especially pleased to know they made a memorable impact on your family’s time with us, keeping everyone entertained with engaging activities and sports. We’re grateful for your kind words about our dining experiences, particularly Citronella’s Italian cuisine, which we’re glad topped the list for you this time around! Our stay at the Sugar Beach resort in early December 2023 was outstanding. We went to celebrate a milestone wedding anniversary. They could not do enough once the hotel learned this was our reason for the visit. We had flowers delivered to our room, bottles of bubbly, canapes and a special anniversary dinner in the Buddha Bar restaurant on the day of our anniversary.

We stayed in a deluxe sea-view room overlooking the main adult pool. The room was lovely, with a large walk-in shower and plenty of storage and space. The way the room is designed is that you enter into a sort of bathroom area, in that it has the two his and hers sinks with the walk-in shower area behind it and the toilet to the side, and the bedroom is beyond that. The two areas can be screened off for privacy if required. The bed is comfortable, although we did have to request more firmer pillows. The housekeeping team is outstanding, and the evening turndown service is lovely, and we appreciated the little touches. Everything is spotless, and they quickly respond to any problems or queries.

We were on the AI plan and found this to be more than adequate. We used all three restaurants on site. Our favourite was the Buddha Bar; the food and service were excellent here. We ate at the Citronella a couple of times. We liked the setting of this and the atmosphere. However, the food was hit-and-miss. I do, however, recommend their excellent pizzas. The main buffet restaurant was also very good, with plenty of choice, with local and international dishes. Breakfast choices were great, and we enjoyed the breakfast fruit choices at breakfast, particularly fresh mangoes, pineapple and watermelon. As a vegetarian, I didn't struggle with food choices. Being a vegetarian, Indian cuisine is a good option for me, and whilst I don't enjoy mouth-numbing heat or spice, here it was very, very mildly spiced, almost bland, and slightly repetitive. This would be my only small criticism.

There are two main pools, with one being adults only. We liked this pool because it had a chilled and peaceful vibe here. We enjoyed watching the sunset every evening from the pool; it was stunning. The pool service here can be slow, so if you want to order many poolside drinks, consider being by the main pool, where there are more staff or the beach. The beach service staff are excellent and very efficient. Shout out to Luka, who looked after us here. The one other area area which could be looked at is the evening entertainment. It could be more well advertised, so you never know what act is on each night nor the timings. While "easy-listening" or mellow jazz acts are pleasant to listen to, acts like the Breakers are more enjoyable and create more of a holiday party vibe with great audience interaction. Generally, we found the resort relatively quiet, with most people in their rooms by 10.30. If you want a more lively and "popping" resort, this would not be it.

The resort is immaculate, and the grounds are well-maintained. The most significant selling point of this resort is the staff. Outstanding in every department. Special shout out to Nimay and Manisha in the Buddha Bar, who looked after us exceptionally and ensured our tipples of choice were ready as soon as we arrived. Also, Vikram in the buffet restaurant who looked after us at breakfast and lunch, along with Ravi, Mitesh, Disha, Dookun, and so many others. All were amazing, and we can't thank them enough for making our stay so enjoyable. Also, to Priya, Executive Housekeeper, who ensured our anniversary was marked properly and looked after us well.
Thank you to the Sugar Beach team; you were all great, and we can't wait to return.

As a party of 3 (2 adults and a 12year old) we resided at Sugar Beach.
We were on an AI plan, and if you tend to stay at the resort and drink and eat during the day, the AI plan does easily pay itself back to you.. The parks at Sugar Beach are really nice and everyday gardeners are working hard to maintain the beautiful parks. We were at Sugar Beach in August, but we were told that for seeing al the flowers in at Sugar Beach, the best period is end of September.
The Staff at Sugar Beach is without any exception very friendly and service minded.
Our room (2-3pers Sea view) was very nice and kept clean every day.
Twice a day we had new towels, the mini bar was filled every morning/early afternoon and every night we were offered a new bottle of fresh drinking water.
When going into the sea, it is recommended to wear some water-shoes as the coral and the sea urchins can easily be stepped on.
We also went on the water by paddle-boat, kajak and sub-board , which were all included in within the Sugar Beach facilities.
As some final suggestions : Book/reserve a. dining at Citronelle and the glass boat trip as soon as you arive (or maybe from home) as they will be fully booked.
Also we made some tours on the Island to see more than only the resort. We did not make use of neither the taxis standing in front of the hotel as well as the tours offered by the travel agency.
We book them with another taxi service which was about 40% cheaper.

But all together, Sugar Beach at Flic en Flac is very nice place to celibate your holidays/wedding.

Dear Partyof2adults1teen, Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with us! We’re absolutely delighted to hear that you and your family had such a memorable stay at Sugar Beach, and that our All-Inclusive plan made your holiday even more enjoyable. It’s lovely to know that you enjoyed the beauty of our resort, especially the meticulously maintained gardens. Our dedicated gardening team takes great pride in keeping the grounds lush and vibrant, and they will be delighted to hear that their hard work did not go unnoticed. Perhaps you’ll have the chance to visit us again in late September when the gardens are in full bloom—it’s truly a sight to behold! We’re so pleased that your room provided a comfortable retreat, and that our housekeeping team took good care of you with their attentive service. It’s the little touches, like fresh towels, a replenished minibar, and evening water service, that we hope make your stay feel extra special. Your adventures on the water sound like so much fun! We’re glad you took advantage of the paddle boats, kayaks, and SUP boards—all great ways to explore the stunning surroundings. Thank you for sharing your tip about water shoes; we agree they’re a good idea for navigating the natural coral and sea life. We appreciate your suggestions about booking dining at Citronella’s and the glass-bottom boat trip early. These experiences are indeed popular, and we always recommend securing your spot as soon as possible to make the most of your stay. Thank you once again for your kind words about our staff and your thoughtful advice for future guests. We hope to welcome you and your family back to Sugar Beach soon, where more adventures and beautiful memories await! Warmest regards, Jean-Marc Ma-Poon General Manager

We are almost at the end of our ten day stay and it’s difficult to rate this hotel because our experience has been everything from 1 to 5. I certainly don’t agree with the 5* ratings and reviews of other recent guests but maybe a factor of the hotel being at almost capacity.

Starting with the positives - stunning location, beautiful sunsets, friendly staff, cocktails at the Bhudda Bar, great spa, good gym (thank you Loretta) and the ‘all inclusive’ package is good value.

The food is “ok” but I appreciate it’s hard to maintain quality when catering for so many people. We often had evening meals in the a la carte restaurants which are decent, and lunch at Citronella’s was always excellent (thank you to Nalini and her team for always looking after us so well).

The less positive side of the hotel, our room was really below average. We have stayed in a lot of nice hotels across Europe, Africa and SE Asia and this is the most basic 5* hotel room we have stayed in; not 5* standard. We moved from our initial allocated room overlooking the reception and buffet restaurant (see comments from another reviewer below…avoid rooms in the low 600’s; we were initially in 605) to a better location, but the room was still very average. The hotel kept telling us that we had “booked a deluxe garden room view” (which was true) but this basically means worst room in the hotel, and they should drop the word ‘deluxe’; it sets a completely inappropriate expectation! They said they would let us know if an upgrade came available (which we were happy to pay for) but we never heard from them. After check-in, the room is your first impression and we usually get a ‘wow factor’ when we walk in…unfortunately this wasn’t the case here and our hotel experience never really recovered from this. Enough about the room, we spent little time in it but be aware when booking.

Our biggest issue has been the quality and speed of service…never have we had such friendly but inefficient service. It is soooo slow. We regularly waited 20+ mins in the morning for a cup of coffee and at dinner in the main restaurant we are usually on our second course before drinks arrive. We eventually started ordering two rounds of drinks at a time. I know it is busy at the moment (98% capacity) but that’s no excuse, and temporary waiting staff need to be better trained; The general service around the pool is also average and inattentive compared to similar hotels…it doesn’t take much to improve things, eg. help people find/move sun loungers, clean sun lounger cushions overnight, empty ashtrays on the beach, etc. These are isolated examples but it was a consistent theme.

Overall, we had a nice beach holiday in a stunning location, but the hotel was only “fine” and could be so much more. The people are so friendly but at the moment they either lack capacity and/or training.

Firstly, I come to Mauritius every year and absolutely love the island. It holds a special place in my heart. Sugar beach and La pirogue (the sister hotel) are resorts we have visited often and we were here last year and other previous years at these two resorts, purely because we favour them to other hotels on the island and the location of them. So some of the comments I’m going to make are made more in comparison of me staying here previous years. I do want to say, the grounds are kept absolutely immaculate and very clean, the beach is also one of my favourite beaches in Mauritius, so you will not be disappointed if you like a nice beach. The rooms also were kept very clean and are decorated modern and to a good standard as they were recently renovated, we had a gorgeous view onto the sea. The buffet food, for buffet food is pretty good, and it nice they incorporate alot of Mauritian dishes into it, so you can get a real taste for Mauritian food. The buddah bar food is nice, good sushi too but it is pretty expensive. We usually hire a car in Mauritius as it’s very easy to drive out there so we did go out for lunch most days and sometimes out for dinner too. The location is good it is on the west side of the island so if you do have a car hire it’s very easy to get to places and you have alot close by. La pirogue the sister hotel is also a lovely hotel, a very nice pool area too, you can use all their facilities too so definitely worth visiting there too. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the three things I would say this year that slightly disappointed us was the service was terribly slow in the restaurants if you wanted a drink etc, sometimes it wasn’t too bad but sometimes you would be waiting for ages. The beach service for drinks and food we basically non existent, or you would have to wait a hour or so for someone to come over then another hour for your drink to come. The one other thing I want to mention is the buddah bar. When this first opened it was absolute gorgeous with cream sofas and it looked so picturesque it was my favourite part of the hotel to sit and have a cocktail. This time, the sofas had changed to chairs and the tables and chairs were all mismatched and it didn’t have the same feel anymore. I know this sounds very minor. But for a 5* hotel it felt like some random chairs and tables have just been put together to replace the sofas and it just doesn’t look as nice or special anymore. Other than those three comments I love this hotel and I would absolutely still come back, I’m saying this all as positive feedback to hope it’s worked on/ changed for future stays as I do recommend alot of people to this hotel and want them to find it as special as I do. Mauritius is a lovely island and there’s alot to see and do, so it’s definitely worth going out and about and not Just staying in the resort, a trip that’s a must is the Catarmaran trip to crystal rock!

Dear Jasmin Lebon, Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback about your recent visit to Sugar Beach. It is always a pleasure to welcome loyal guests like you who hold Mauritius and our resort in such high regard. Your thoughtful observations provide invaluable insights, especially as someone with years of experience visiting both Sugar Beach and La Pirogue. I’m delighted to hear that you continue to enjoy the beauty of our well-maintained grounds, stunning beach, and the modern charm of our rooms, particularly with the breathtaking sea views. It’s also wonderful to know that our culinary offerings, especially the incorporation of local Mauritian flavors in the buffet, resonated with you. I deeply regret, however, that certain aspects of your experience fell short this time. The slower service you encountered in our restaurants and on the beach is not reflective of the attentive experience we strive to provide. Your comments have been shared with the relevant teams, and we are committed to addressing these areas promptly to ensure more seamless service in the future. Your feedback about the changes to the Buddha-Bar Beach setup is equally valuable. We understand that the ambiance plays a significant role in creating memorable experiences, and your observations will guide us as we continue refining our guest spaces. We truly appreciate your candid perspective and your ongoing support for our resort. It’s heartening to know you remain eager to return, and we hope your next stay will be an even more exceptional experience, one that matches the high expectations you have come to associate with Sugar Beach. We look forward to welcoming you back to your Mauritian home. Warm regards, Jean-Marc Ma-Poon General Manager

We arrived at Sugar Beach having called ahead to request a quiet room, and were reassured by reception staff that it had been noted and granted. The adjoining family room was clean and well appointed, if a little compact and we were looking forward to starting a relaxing family break.

Unfortunately, at 7pm, we realised our ‘quiet’ room was actually closest to the bar, which played booming music from sundown to midnight and left us unable to sleep. We went for dinner in the busy main buffet restaurant, and then decided to have a wander around to find an area where we could grab a drink and chat. But the only spot open was the open-air, live music, which was followed by a DJ set from 10.30. If you’re looking for rest and relaxation on a family break, this isn’t the place for you, as the 10.30 open air DJ is on nightly and can be heard across the resort.

After breakfast on the first morning, and discovering every chair was encrusted with bird poop (they’re all woven wicker, a strange choice for an open-sided dining spot with a bird problem) and being told it wasn’t possible to move our bar-adjacent room, we decided to move on. Although the staff did what they could (putting napkins on the back of chairs was the solution for the bird poop issue, so we didn’t have to lean back and get it on clothes and hands) ultimately this place needs a decent clean and a change of furniture. Seeing the birds eating from the serving spoons and hopping about on croissant trays definitely put my off my breakfast.

Also be aware that if you’re HB prices for drinks and lunch are high. Eating at Budda Bar (which was surprisingly spotless and had no bird issue) left us with a bill for an afternoon snack of £100. This consisted of two cocktails, some edamame, broccoli tempura, six prawns and some calamari. Lunch for two adults and two kids set us back £250 at the same place. Getting people in and then charging as much as possible for extras seems the deal here.

It was our first time visiting Mauritius and we couldn’t be more excited to be staying at Sugar Beach hotel. Upon arrival, we were taken aback by the beautiful surroundings, warm welcomes, lush green grounds and beautiful blue ocean. Overall, we had a wonderful stay over our 10 nights at the hotel but I would say there are little things that could be improved in order for me to give it full stars.

Firstly, be prepared to be slapped with a bill for almost everything…and it isn’t cheap. We decided to go half board, as we knew we would be out during the day for trips. We were surprised to find out that water was not included at dinner time. You have to pay for a bottle of tap water, which isn’t something I’d expect at a 5* hotel. Tap water should at the very least be included with food, and all other drinks to be billed. Very often, we found the level of service to be inconsistent. Some of the staff members are absolutely fantastic and hospitable, but at other times, others wouldn’t even acknowledge us in the breakfast/dinner room. One morning I wanted to grab a table around our usual spot in the breakfast hall, and there were a few empty tables that needed clearing. Rather than clear a couple of glasses and lay fresh napkins, the waitress turned me away and told me to ‘find a table on the other side of the hall’.

I wanted to give a special mention to Pamela, who works in the fitness centre, who went above and beyond with her kindness and warmth. In fact when she found out we were leaving, she came running over to embrace us and wish us well. She is a real gem and an asset to the hotel. Another special mention to Chesley, who works front of house. Our flight was extremely delayed and as a result, we had no choice but to hang around the hotel despite having checked out. He was the only member of staff to come over and check that we were ok and see if we needed anything. He even very kindly offered us a room completely free of charge so that we could rest for a few hours and shower etc prior to our flight. I cannot express how appreciative we were of this during quite a stress situation, we were touched by his kindness immensely.

Overall, I would highly recommend Sugar Beach hotel. It is easily one of the best, if not the best, hotel in West Mauritius in terms of the beautiful lush surroundings, relaxation etc. There just needs to be some changes in terms of consistency in service level in order for it to feel like a real 5* experience.

Dear M A, Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed review. I am thrilled to hear that your first visit to Mauritius, and your stay with us at Sugar Beach, left you with such wonderful memories of our beautiful surroundings and welcoming atmosphere. I truly appreciate your feedback regarding some of the areas where we can improve. Your experience with inconsistent service during meals, as well as the issue with the water charge at dinner, is something I sincerely regret. Your points are well noted, and we are continuously working on refining our guest experience to ensure that it aligns with the high standards we aim to provide. Your suggestion regarding water service at dinner will certainly be taken into consideration as we review our offerings. It’s heartwarming to read about your interactions with both Pamela and Chesley. Pamela’s genuine care and kindness, and Chesley’s thoughtful gesture during your delayed flight, truly reflect the hospitality we strive for. I will personally share your words of praise with both of them—they will be immensely grateful to know that their efforts made such a positive impact on your stay. Thank you for your recommendation and your understanding. It’s wonderful to know that, despite a few hiccups, you found Sugar Beach to be one of the best hotels in the region, particularly for relaxation amidst our lush, serene surroundings. We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back for an even more seamless and memorable stay in the future. Warm regards, Jean-Marc Ma-Poon General Manager

This resort is a slice of paradise that effortlessly combines luxury with natural beauty. The property boasts a stunning beachfront location, offering uninterrupted views of the turquoise Indian Ocean and some of the most breathtaking sunsets you’ll ever witness. Each evening, the sky transforms into a canvas of fiery oranges, soft pinks, and deep purples, creating an unforgettable backdrop for a peaceful stroll along the beach.

The accommodations are equally remarkable, with spacious suites and villas featuring modern amenities, plush furnishings, and private terraces or pools that enhance the sense of exclusivity. The resort’s lush gardens and palm-lined pathways add to its tranquil ambiance, making it an oasis of calm.

Dining is a culinary journey, with multiple restaurants serving gourmet international and local cuisine. Every meal is a feast for the senses. One can also indulge in rejuvenating spa treatments, water sports, or simply lounge by the infinity pool with a refreshing cocktail in hand.

The attentive and friendly staff go above and beyond to ensure your stay is nothing short of perfect. A truly magical escape that leaves you yearning to return.

A heavenly setting with dedicated teams for your comfort. The hotel is of high quality, particularly the restaurant on the patio, masterfully managed by Mr. Siven. The Buddha bar offers very interesting revisited recipes. The rooms are very comfortable and the bedding is of very good quality. The maintenance of the rooms is carried out with care by Françoise and her colleagues who do a very good job on a daily basis for the pleasure of customers. Very nice establishment.

It was our first time at this resort and we were pleasantly surprised.
Our room was very spacious and there was enough storage space for our luggage. The cleanliness was checked several times a day, the towels were changed regularly and the minibar was replenished regularly. Special requests were fulfilled immediately.
The complex is situated in such a way that all rooms are quiet and not disturbed by street noise or other disturbances. It stretches about 1/2 km along a beautiful sandy beach. It is only a few steps from all the flats to the beach.
The main restaurant offers different buffets every evening, both international and local.
Two additional à la carte restaurants provide a wonderful variety and offer a wide selection of delicacies, some of which have to be paid for in addition to the meals included in the all-inclusive package. Both the food and the wine selection are of a very high standard and it is worth visiting the à la carte restaurants.
From breakfast to dinner, we felt that we were always served with friendliness.
The only point is that the staff in the restaurants check the T-shirts for stains from time to time and are given the opportunity to change them if necessary.
As holidaymakers who are looking for peace and quiet but also want to be active on the beach, we can recommend this resort without reservation.

For all inclusive you have to be a foodie as it includes Lunch plus a reasonable and varied discount at other restaurants. If not drinkers all-inclusive is a luxury but drinks are expensive in Mauritius! Note all inclusive does not mean all drinks! Wine is included but spirits not...

There is a shop but can’t recall large bottles of water, however, if you go all inclusive you’ll be able to access all the water you want. Well worth doing and works out cheaper in the long run too.
