This hotel is one of the most famous in Toba…and probably was a real gem 40/50 years ago when the Japanese Emperor and even Queen Elizabeth II stayed here…but like Toba itself is probably not what it once was! The hotel is in 2 wings (the Ocean wing and the Harbor wing) At first we booked a Harbor wing room. The room, while offering a view of the water, looks out onto the back of the ferry terminal in the distance. Also it seems that the sightseeing boats sometimes come into this area to turn or park up.From about 7 am you will hear boarding sounds to announce the different ferries leaving….which certainly makes it a more lively experience. We were offered an upgrade (unfortunately not free) to an Ocean View suite for ¥2500 per person…and after seeing the room we jumped at the chance. A huge room (two big beds) with uninterrupted views out to sea.Probably refurbished about 4 or 5 years ago…the bedroom and sitting area were very nice with a telescope for birdwatching if you are interested. Also a Nespresso coffee machine and free water. The bathroom and toilet seemed older and while it was lovely to have a bath in the morning with the sun streaming in and the wind blowing, these rooms could probably do with an upgrade to put them in line with the bedroom/sitting area (don’t look too carefully at the floors…carpets…tatami flooring or the big green bathtub) Package included breakfast. There was good English signage on the different foodstuffs on offer. The Japanese food selection seemed good/the western options a little disappointing (omelettes…cooked to order if you ask/fish and chips/pizza/sausage and grilled bacon) There is no hot spring in this hotel itself. The sister hotel - Shiojitei - a beautiful looking Japanese style ryokan hotel houses the baths.Guests can use the pearl baths by either walking easily from the Harbor view rooms (about 2-3 minutes) or take a shuttle bus from the reception area. The baths were very nice…but if they are the purpose of your stay then stay at Shiojitei as you can wear your yukata and just pop up/down from your room. You have to dress/undress appropriately if you stay in the International and this might be a little too much trouble to go to the baths a number of times! The staff are excellent.Very friendly and welcoming(a few spoke English)Their shuttle services to/from the train station are frequent and they will even do outside of the schedule if you are lucky! Also they take guests to/from Shiojitei at the drop of a hat. All in all.Beautiful views from the Ocean wing suites. If that s what you re looking for worth the upgrade from the Harbor wing rooms. The ocean views are better from the International…whereas for a Japanese feeling hotel with the main focus on the hot-spring baths I would stay at Shiojitei.

This is one of these classic first rate hotels that have been graced by the royal family, in this case the last three emperors. The service is beyond excellent and the room and the view were so nice. The restaurant was very good, in this case, worth the hotel prices. The Japanese restaurant had a set menu that was only ¥6800 and it was plenty of food for us. The wine list was quite good and the library bar was very classy without being antiquated.. everything in fact is nicely renovated. And the ambience was very nice.My wife said the spa was very nice and had pearl powder in the water. It’s highly recommended not to try to walk to the hotel because it’s up a steep hill and there’s no sidewalk. It’s only a quick drive from the train station but worth waiting for the shuttle bus or taking a quick taxi ride. The lobby has a lounge that overlooks the bay with floor to ceiling two-story glass. The bathroom was small but the shower is in the bathtub and it is not too well lit… but most just go to the onsen anyway. It was a nice mixture of young couples, young families and older couples. No jetsetters or wild types.

The hotel has Ocean view rooms, mountain view rooms and harbor view rooms. They all have a modern decor. The Japanese style dinner was one of the most delicious meals I have experienced. Excellent sashimi and lobster. The staff were very attentive and friendly.

This was a really great hotel. We stayed ion Toba on our trip around Mie to visit the aquarium. We did not like the aquarium too much but really loved this hotel. The staff were so wonderful and friendly. Our room was very well designed and comfortable. The hotel is big and beautiful and we had a wonderful nice view of Toba bay. The property is on a cliff over the bay, great place. The hotel is linked with another smaller one next door which also has the onsen in it, a 2 minute walk outside. The onsen is really great and had a pearl bath. Very nice onsen! We didn't have dinner there, we ate in town, but the breakfast buffet was really good. Nice service. Nice hotel. Worth a stay.

For Westerners reading this review, bare in mind that this is a Japanese owned and operated hotel catering to Japanese travelers. You will not feel welcomed at this property and they will make sure that you get the message. Toba International Hotel is a failure in every aspect of the hospitality industry. Starting from the check in process. No one at front desk speaks English. NO ONE! I mean, they have “international” on their name but there is nothing international about this property. And then there is the annoyed attitude from all the staff when you approach them - one feels like you are disturbing them. The bed is like sleeping on plywood - I’ve never seen a hotel that provides a bed this hard. So I went to front desk and asked for some kind of padding for the bed. With an annoyed expression on his face, front desk employee said to me in broken English: “That’s the only mattress we have.” We also asked front desk to call a restaurant for reservation and we got another rude answer: “You should call them yourself.” Every single request seemed to be a burden and the answer was always NO. When we asked for information about the attractions around the hotel, they seemed lost and confused like they had no idea about what to tell us. We booked two rooms for three nights. One ocean view and another one “mountain view”. Note that the pictures on their website and booking sites are photoshopped. The “Mountain View” room is actually “parking lot view” - see picture attached to my review. If you stay at the ocean view room you get two bottles of water per day, but if you stay at the parking lot view room you don’t get any water and you have to pay $5 for one bottle at the room’s mini bar. Talking about being out of touch with current hospitality rules - you are trying to nickel and dime your guests over a 20 cents bottle of water?! The room itself is updated and look nice but they must have run out of money when they got to the bathrooms. Think Motel 8 bathroom but worse. Minuscule area, dark with plastic sink and shower area, towels that look and feel like old rags. See pictures attached to this review. Breakfast is basic with very few western options and every morning of our stay it was the same food. Service is almost non-existent during breakfast. You have to help yourself even for coffee. Dinner at the hotel’s restaurant was a complete rip-off. Around US$200/300 per person for a pre-fix menu. I had chicken a la carte one night US$30 and I got 50g of chicken with three small veggies. See picture. There was 4 people dining at the restaurant that night as most of the guests go into town to eat local food at reasonable prices. Shuttle ends at 6pm, so if you want to go to town you’ll have to rely on taxis since the hotel will make no effort to help you go out or return to the property. We talked to management on the last night of our stay to report our concerns. He shook his head. That was the response we got. This was a total disaster stay for me and my group. We’ve been traveling in Japan and we were always in owe of the Japanese hospitality. Toba International Hotel is a management disaster, a unwelcoming hotel and a stain in Japan’s hotel industry.

The hotel is conveniently located just 5 min (by car) from.toba station. We arrived around 930pm at night. As we could not get a taxi, we called the hotel and they sent someone to pick us up from the station. The hotel has shuttle buses running from toba station up till 1800h. If you're arriving later, you may want to let the hotel know and arrange pick up. We used this hotel as a base to sightsee the nearby towns. The drive up to the hotel is easy, and parking is free. We had a western style room which faced the sea. We could see the sun rise from our bed room every morning. It was fantastic!! The only area which the hotel could improve in is in providing more comfortable beds and pillows. This hotel is linked to a Japanese style hotel called Shiojitei, next door. Guests of this hotel can easily walk over to Shiojitei to use the onsen any time. If you stay here, I highly recommend this pearl onsen! Feels great and you walk out shimmering in pink pearl after! I tried Sea Horse restaurant at this hotel. It was fantastic. They had this abalone steak in butter sauce which was to die for!

Stayed a night here and it was a wonderful experience. Booked half board, and chose the French restaurant. Food was excellent - the sauce complemented each dish well and plating was beautifully done. The lobster bisque at breakfast buffet is a must-have, and regretfully I was unable to buy the take away as it required advance order, so do take note if you are keen! While the hot spring was in their sister hotel, it was still convenient as they will drive you there whenever needed. The two outdoor pearl onsens were well maintained and clean. Pleasantly surprised that the soak left my skin subtly shimmery under light. It was a peaceful soak as I hardly bumped into anyone. Service was excellent as expected. The half hourly free shuttle to/fro Toba station was also appreciated. Would love to return here someday.

We had two mountain-facing suites in the Ocean Wing (although you could see some of the harbour as well). I had the impression from poring over reviews and the Web that perhaps these would be nicer (newer? more recently renovated?) than the ones in the Harbour Wing. I'm not exactly sure if that was true or not but, regardless, they were lovely. I wasn't sure if we would be there by dinner time or not, so opted for a room and breakfast package. The breakfast was beyond fantastic. I think it cost us 2000 yen each to do it that way versus 3200 yen (or so) if we had paid for it separately that morning. Anyway, without a doubt, well worth the money. The onsen was nice although, without my glasses, I somehow didn't realize that there was a rotemburo (outdoor bath) which was a shame as it would have been a unique experience (it has pearl powder in it). My daughter went and said it was lovely. One thing I wasn't sure about was how our family of four would fit in our suite as the pictures just seemed to show a couch and two beds. However, what they did was put two more single beds in the room with the sofa, and that worked out very well. Anyway, it was a little piece of heaven. If I had to choose three things that were particularly noteworthy, I'd say first the service, second the breakfast, and third the view/atmosphere on the large outdoor deck (the picture of which is shown on their website with the outdoor lounge area).

The hotel consists of Ocean Wing, Harbour Wing (collectively the Toba International Hotel) and Shiojite (the new wing). We had the benefit of staying in both Toba International and Shiojite, which is where the onsen is situated. We booked Shiojite for two nights but when we arrived and inspected the Ocean Wing Suite, we loved it so much and the hotel kindly let us chang our second night to Ocean Wing without any charge. Lovely! The view in the Ocean View Suite is absolutely picturesque and stunning - you will see trees, islands, sea, birds, ships, etc, all peacefully and beautifully placed in one go at your window frame. It was a western style room, furnished in a minimalistic yet tasteful style. Don't be misled by other reviews - its not dated at all! We loved it so much that we had to stay for an extra night. On the last night, we wanted to stay one more night but the hotel was full so we had to leave and stay in another hotel. Location is perfect - on top of the stunning view, it is 5-minute ride by hotel shuttle from the train station where everything situates. If you don't have a car it does make a difference. Breakfast and dinner at the French restaurant is gorgeous. Japanese dinner is just par. At this rate (around HK$4,000) for a suite including breakfast, dinner and onsen, it is well worth it. What more do you want? Don't worry about onsen as the hotel provides shuttle bus (one-minute ride) whenever you want to go to Shiojite for their pearl onsen - don't miss it! Onsen works until midnight. P.S. we also stayed one night at Toba Sea Side Hotel. It's 1/4 cheaper than Toba International but I suggest you don't waste your money there. It's a dated traditional onsen hotel, far away from train station, and food is mediocre at best.

From getting off the train, it was a very short walk to the hotel shuttle bus which left promptly and drove us up the steep hill to the hotel. We were welcomed by the hotel staff as the bus pulled up and escorted to the lounge, where we were given a hot towel and energising green tea whilst we checked in. The most comfortable check in experience I’ve ever had! We chose a forest view room and were not disappointed. Despite the car park being very visible, we had a stunning view of the surrounding forest and some of the sea. The room itself had a very large open space lounge area and two large very comfortable beds. We had been travelling in the day and were quite tired by this point, wanting to organise dinner. We looked at the menu for either of the two restaurants in the hotel. Unfortunately, these were far too expensive and the menus felt exclusive and executive. We travel a lot and having an un-complex alternative would have been perfect. We subsequently ventured into Toba to track down a restaurant. The hotel drove us there and picked us up when we called them. Again, very helpful! In summary, this hotel could not have been more accommodating and it reeks of luxury. For the one night we were there it was lovely, but for any longer, we would have felt out of our comfort zone. The atmosphere was such that I felt I needed to be wearing a suit to go and get a coffee.
