A stay at this ryokan is to immerse yourself not only in the clear, hot water springs that have attracted visitors for 400 years, but to immerse yourself in the traditions upon which modern Japanese culture is based. To enter the reception area with its warm timber and tatami finishes is like stepping back in time to a more serene...

Delightful staff, very attentive and kind although many had limited English- it was all better than our Japanese. Our room was in the newer section so we ate in the restaurant but it had the delight of our own onsen ( hot springs bath) on the balcony. The food was some of the best traditional Japanese food we have had...

Our travel agent booked this stay for us and it was one of the top experiences of our two week stay in Japan from Tokyo to Kyoto. A lot of tourist make the mistake of coming to Hakone on a day trip from Tokyo and end up missing out on the gem of staying in such traditional ryokans. It was...

We stayed here for a couple of days after travelling around Japan and this certainly was my favorite part of the trip. We had 2 rooms with private onsens. The private onsens were really nice and convenient and if you like your privacy, it's the perfect alternative to the public onsens. The other 2 public onsens were nice and clean...

We were travelling from Tokyo to Kyoto and decided to spend a night at a ryokan with a private bath for the experience. The "cottage" was oldish Japanese and clean overall. The dinner and breakfast was ok but nothing to write home about. Soaking outdoors in the cold in a natural hot spring bath was the highlight and it is...

From Tokyo we took the Odakyu Romance rail car to Hakone-Yumoto station. Where you could get lunch and quaint Japanese snacks before getting on the bus 2 to Horai-en which cost 580yen. It started to rain when we were on our way to the ryokan. When we got off, a staff came towards us with umbrellas and carried our bags...

My husband and I spent the last leg of our Japan trip at the beautiful Mikawaya Ryokan nestled in the mountainside in Hakone. It was a one day stay since it was a bit of a splurge but was worth every single penny. Getting there: We arrived at Odawara station from Kyoto. I highly recommend using either the coin storage...

We stayed in the Japanese style villa so our experience relates to these rooms. Not all rooms are the same and don't all have meals in room like we did. If you do stay in one of these villas you will not be disappointed. loads of room your own garden with own onsen all privately screened from everywhere else and...

Mikawaya is a real gem. A real sense of culture and history oozes off it, and the rooms are wonderfully decorated. The staff are some of the friendliest and hospitable people i've ever come across, where nothing was too much trouble. Wifi is only available in the reception area, but the breathtaking views in the surrounding area make it easy...

This is an 18th Century Ryokan built over a hot springs. We saw things there that you only see in museums, including three large meeting rooms with the original screens. Set along side a beautiful stream carved into the mountainside, we had a room with a private Japanese style hot bath situated in a rock garden. On the fourth floor...
