Matsue is not a beautiful city, mostly built in concrete with a bridge not so attractive still in concrete. There is castle up there always with a ccold flux worth visiting. The people are speaking Japanese and almost nothing else. If you are like me, not fluent In Japanese, you can be sure that you are lost. However, you come...

Ohashikan is situated directly on the Ohashi river, just a short walk from the JR train station. Our room was beautiful and comfortable with a wonderful view of the river and lake. Dinners were spectacular, and made from locally sourced ingredients. A soak in the onsen was a great end to the day. But, as hard as it is to...

It is not often that you come across a place that has charm, history, comfort, fantastic food, a lovely setting & very hospitable hosts! I stayed with a small group and each person enjoyed this traditional ryokan the most. James & Junko & their tireless smiling staff truly welcome you and are there for every need. The rooms are lovely...

I stayed 3 nights at Ohashikan in November 2016, and I had a wonderful experience. I had a huge corner room which even had a small private garden in the entry way. The view from the room was breathtaking, especially at sunset. The food was some of the best that I've ever had in Japan. The staff is really friendly...

This is a traditional Japanese ryokan and onsen. The rooms are spacious and tastefully designed in the Japanese manner with tatami mats, low table and furniture, and in the evening, comfortable futon beds. However, for western guests, each room is also designed with western comfort in mind. Two western chairs with a table are placed in a view alcove overlooking...

This ryokan is in a fantastic position overlooking the well known bridge and rapids - we think all the rooms have a river view. Its 10 minutes walk in one direction to the station and 10 minutes in the other to the castle/old town area. We had a large room which was Japanese style but in the enclosed balcony were...

From the moment we arrived the warmth exuded my expectations. The women could choose whatever pattern they wanted from the gorgeous patterns of yukata's that were available. Each day you would choose another. We were given a few Japanese treats and delicious macha green tea. Our rooms were lovely, clean and spacious. The food was truly remarkable. The onsen was...

Though unavailable, James offered us coffee and booked us a room at a place nearby. Wish we could have spent more time, highly recommend! If in the area again, we will surely book here, a bit more in advance 😁 great destination and exceptional service!

First, let me start out by saying that I didn't focus too much on where we were staying when my cousin reserved this hotel. We came for the weekend to visit our parents' hometown, their childhood home and to revisit the many memories we had visiting our grandparents here in Matsue. Staying at Ohashikan exceeded my expectations and made our...

A wonderful Ryokan experience! The service and food were exceptional. Don't speak Japanese? No worries. James and his wife both speak English and they will take care of you in every way. They will assist you with sites to see, local sweets to try, local wares for which to shop (if free, they will even accompany you to facilitate any...
