I would choose an inn with a hot spring.
After all, it is better to have a large bath and soak in the hot spring.
Although there is some distance from Kofu Station, I didn’t have a hard time walking around the city.
Although the location is like a shopping street, the restaurants are unevenly distributed and there are many smaller ones, so it takes a bit of time to find them.
If you don't focus on hot springs, I think it's easier to stay in front of the station.
There is a night-singing soba service, but I've never eaten it myself.
We stayed in a Japanese tatami room which is big enough for all of us. The hotel rate included breakfast and usage of indoor and outdoor hot spring bath. The buffet breakfast was really good and they also served Houtou (a local popular noodle dish)! We also enjoyed soaking in the outdoor hot spring bath with the moon above us.
Hotel staff speak very little English but we managed to communicate with them somehow. The washing machines are free for us to use although we need to pay 100yen for using the dryer. The hotel also serve noodle for supper which is free for hotel guests.
The hotel is not exactly near the Kofu station so I would recommend taking taxi if one has a lot of luggage. Walking to and fro the Kofu station (about 15minutes) is a breeze without luggage with many shops and restaurants to explore along the way. The Okajima shopping mall is just nearby.
Do visit the Shousenkyo when you are in Kofu. Take bus 3 or 4 from Kofu bus station (next to the train station) and pay 870yen/adult to the driver when you alight at the last station.
We enjoyed staying in this hotel and would recommend it to others who visit Kofu.
The answer is: quite a lot! It started with good parking and friendly staff at checkin (although hardly any English is spoken). They're quick and polite and show the many free services the hotel offers: snacks, microwaves, onsen (hot bath), ice machine, PCs and more. The room was much, much better than I ever dared to expect for this price. They're fair sized and offer more luxury than one can reasonably expect at this price.
The only minor problem I experienced was cigarette smell from the hallway (near smoke free rooms #417) and noise from the adjacent rooms. Other than that it was a fine stay, I had a good rest and a nice time in Kofu.
The next day Dormy Inn offered a buffet breakfast that far surpasses that of other budget hotels like Remm or Washington. After staying at Dormy Inn just one question remains: how does this hotel make any profit at all?
I have stayed at the Dormy inn on tree occasions during the last three years and have noticed a slow but steady decline in quality, particularly of the breakfasts.
The hot spring is on the 10th floor. Unfortunately I took it at night. I would have been more comfortable if I had taken it during the daytime. This bath is big enough and there is an outside one. There are two bath spaces that are available for both men and women. We have to take our own towel which is provided in the room. Lockers are available in the dressing room.
The room is spacious, but not too big. It is very functional. Nothing else needs to be added. However, the desk is relatively small, so it isn't easy to do much work. This room is clean and has a shower, toilet and a unit bathtub including a shower.
I didn't have enough time to have breakfast there. It starts at 6.15am, which I think is convenient for business people. Actually, many people ate there from early in the morning. I will enjoy it next time.
I took a hotel bus which left for Kofu station at 6.40 am and I'm now going back to Tokyo using the express train. I will reach Shinjyuku station around 9.00am. I had a comfortable trip this time.
- Centrally located with F & B options
- Clean hotel
- Clean rooms
- Functional toilet and sink area
- Acceptable room space but still need some efficient space management on your part, multiple large suitcase will have a problem. Best with small or medium size.
- Onsen availability
However:
- On site carpark is rather limited during my stay and its automated stacked parking
- Location is about 15mins walk from Kofu Station. Weather may screw this up for you.
A preferred choice for the area, but I'll try the other Dormy Inn within Kofu next time for a comparison.
