If you want to stay at a traditional Japanese hotel in Ryokan-style, this is the place where you have to be. Especially, Momoyama-anex is a great place with "hori-gotatsu", private semi-open air Onsen with view of the garden and dinner and breakfast which is served in own room. I spent two days at Sanpeiso. We were looking for somewhere traditionally Japanese with good traditional food, but easy to reach from Tokyo by train. Atami is a very old spa town linked to Tokyo by Shinkansen but we took the Odoriko observation car train that reaches Atami in just over 90 minutes. The hotel is not too far from...
