A small and simple ryokan with fantastic staff and wonderful rooms. If you are looking for something in a traditional Japanese style with futons and Japanese meals served in your room, this is it. Most rooms share a bath, but that was not a problem.

The staff and facilities here are just so wonderful. Lovely rooms, food and situated centrally. Breakfast is traditional Japanese; there is also coffee available. Lots of information in English. What is not to love?

We had a delightful stay here for one night (wished I stayed longer). From the second we entered this peaceful ryokan, we were greeted warmly by Mie who spoke excellent English.I strongly recommend dining within the ryokan as the dinner and breakfast served were absolutely delicious with freshly bought local produce. The ryokan is situated within walking distance to most... More

What a great place ! We stayed in an immaculate Japanese-style family room for 4 (with a Western bathroom) for 2 nights in August 2016. It’s the real Ryokan experience – the building is ancient with a superlative, if tiny, public room on the first floor with breathtaking pine tree cross beams that reminded me of a medieval English barn.... We spent one night at Sumiyoshiya in Auguts 2016 and we really enjoyed it. This is a small (4 rooms I think) family run traditional ryokan. Our room was really spacious and seemed to be recentrly renovated especially the private bathroom and toilet areas. Staff/owners are really friend,y and speak good English. The ryokan is in a very nice typicla... More

We read about this inn in a Japanese guidebook which says that it is very good. The inn was located 5 min walk from the major seafood market, where you can eat fresh raw seafood on the spot with a reasonable price. Don't expect a hotel/ butler service, as this inn is family run. We were served by a middle... More

What a wonderful place! Perfectly located, traditional inn for 9 generations in the same family. I stayed here for 2 nights in June 2016 on a business + leisure trip to Japan. Really glad I stopped in Kanazawa, where it looked like I was one of few Western visitors during my stay. This ryokan is beautifully appointed and the food... More

We stayed two nights here. It was our first experience of a ryokan, and a great choice. Beautiful architecture and room. Helpful, friendly owner. We found Kanazawa uninteresting, but it was worth the visit just to stay here.
