A lovely retreat about an hour and a half from Takayama. Absolutely worth the trip out there for gobsmacking views, beautiful onsen and fabulous meals in a friendly environment. If you are taking buses, you need to get good information from the tourist information bureau beside the station. Limited number of buses a day and some don't stop at the...

Had a romantic weekend in the mountains. This is a traditional Japanese ryokan, offering two private outdoor onsens, a delicious dinner and breakfast, and a quiet retreat. We loved staying here and we were able to communicate enough with our very limited Japanese. Highlight was the view of the mountains from the outdoor onsen!!

In amongst the trees and nature and nearly 2 hours by bus from Takayama. Nice landscaping and lovely hosts (Pilipino lady and hubby) Dinner quite overpriced (but they waived the bill as I was a little upset when we arrived. Another website said it was in Takayama. I had emailed the property twice to get collected at the train but...

We stayed at Yakenoyu for only one night on our trip in the Japanese Alps. It's a ryokan onsen with traditional looks, although quite modern in its construction (may lack "typical"/"heritage" feel if you've visited older style ryokans before). The family is very nice and helpful, very welcoming. We would highly recommend a stopover there if you're in the area....

The area surrounding the ryokan was not particularly nice and the ryokan is clearly from the 70s. The rooms where big, clean and nice. There was almost no other visitors and the staff was never anywhere to be found apart from breakfast and dinner. The meals where good and very big but also very expensive. During the day there was...

This ryokan is just amazing! I came from Takayama by bus and got off at Nakao Toy Museum. Just go straight and then you can find it it's very easy to locate. It's very quiet and super peaceful so you can have a truly relaxing holiday. The room is typical japanese tatami style which is very big and we got...

Great facilities, beautiful room with the mountain view, amazing private onsen (on the fresh air) and very helpful staff (the owner gave us a ride to the bus stop). Don't forget to order the dinner as they have really good tempura and sashimi :)

This place is hidden within the great mountains but is very easy to find: the bus stop "Toys museum" is right next door. You need the bus that goes in direction of Shinhotaka rope from Takayama and stops at Nakao Kogen - four buses a day make that loop up the main road. The ryokan is down the small road...
