Stayed there for one night in Kakurean Hidaji in October 2016. This beautiful ryokan is located in Fukuji Onsen, just 2 mins by walk from a bus station in Fukuji and around 10 mins by bus from the Hirayu Onsen Bus Terminal where you can take the bus to Kamikochi and other areas. With advance notice, the ryokan may also... More

Stayed here one night only. Loved this ryokan. Private open onsen with excellent Japanese meals and service. The private onsen is really big in size. They also have a public onsen but not really attractive, and without shower facilities too. A bit expensive compared with other onsen ryokans.

Private onsen pool and bathroom with good smell of wood is absolutely unexpectedly excellent!! Many only provide public pool and have to shower out there. I'm kind of person have to shower after wake up in the morning so this hotel is so great for me. Everything is so detailedly decorated and even the food!! So yummy!! Food in small... More

Kakurean Hidaji is located on the mountain in Okuhida Onsen. We stayed here for 1 night. When we first entered the ryokan, we could feel the tradition of Japanese ryokan culture. There is a cozy Japanese fireplace at the lobby. We were greeted by a very well English spoken staff where she explained many interesting things. The service in this... More

We planned to stay here only one night so that we could visit the Shin Hotaka Ropeway more easily. Alas we were snowed out that day so we spent most of our time in the hotel. Luckily for us the Kakurean Hidaji was well equipped for cold weather! This Ryokan only has 12 rooms, some with its own outdoor onsen... More

This ryokan only has 12 rooms and each is very spacious, together with our own small outdoor onsen bath or rotemburo. It is located on Hidaji in the Fukuji Onsen area. This is actually good, in the right season, for hiking up the hill. We saw a large location map pointing to various hiking possibilities. Unfortunately for us, it was... More

I've stayed at over 10 ryokans by now and would surely count this as one of my favourites. The Kakurean Hidaji is top of TripAdvisor's list of hotels for the Takayama region, and with good reason. Located in Fukiji, a tiny unassuming village in the Okuhida onsen collective of 5 onsen villages, the small ryokan (only 12 rooms) is spaciously... More

I don't have much to add to all the previous reviews. Kakurean Hidaji is incredibly beautiful, has lovely staff and serves fantastic food. Our stay could not have been better. The private onsen was a delight and a very memorable experience. The foliage around us had just started to change to autumn colours, but when it's in full swing the... More

I'll cherish our one-night stay in this traditional ryokan, a handsome building, perched at the top of the street in a small area renowned for its onsens. The immediate area surrounding Hidaji has a rustic charm, especially around the nearby small market - the laidback country feel was very different to the typical Japanese manicured look we were used to.... The rooms and en suite onsen are everything that you imagine when you think of a traditional Japanese roykan. The staff are very friendly and gave attentive service. The evening meal, served in your own private dining room, was excellent with lots of interesting dishes. It is a bit more difficult to get to than Hirayu Onsen as it takes... More
