Detailed Reviews
We had a lovely 4 nights getaway at Troutbeck. The entire stay we felt safe, relaxed, and enjoyed much needed space with nature.
The Pros:
1) The ground and the house is beautiful - if you come here just to be able to walk, breathe, feel free so you don't have to recalulate your route to avoid other pedestrians. This is the place.
2) Clean - the room is so clean! Spotless when we arrive. You can ask for housekeeping if wanted. We didn't and find no need to, spare towels were given and we did make that much mess during the 5 days stay. Only once we took the garbage with some food items downstairs.
3) The team is great, everyone made us felt welcome and catered to (Food and bar is exceptional!) Yes, we are in a pandemic, so sometimes during service it can have some kinks, but we were in no rush and the staff always make it pleasaent for us. I must have bother the receptionist everyday with various questions and they always make me feel I am no bother.
Cons: Sound does travel, whether because it was quieter outside, the upstairs room guests are especially heavy footed at midnight, or it is a historical house with thin walls, just know that you will hear your neighbors.
Overall, if you are expecting a 5 stars hotel and white gloves service, you will most likely be disappointed. Our experience is a nice boutique hotel, with a great food and bar program (4 stars), great team going above and beyond (earning the extra star)! At time service/quality can be a little inconsistent but we are in a pandemic. Pricing for food can be a bit pricey as you don't have a la carte choices and I would not recommend the picnic (it is the idea that's more appealing). Get a nice lunch ordered from the pool and take it to one of the many nice outdoor spots (favorite: Gazebo next to the stream) and you will be happy and relax without the bill scare.
We would love to visit again - thank you Troutbeck Team for giving us the only vacation we have this year! Helping us saved the summer!

I stayed at Troutbeck for two relaxing days and I was not ready to go. I was anxious about leaving home and being in a new place amidst the current Covid scare. The staff goes above and beyond to make sure everything is thoroughly cleaned and people are properly distanced. I felt incredibly safe and was able to let loose. Everybody on staff is fully masked (I never once saw a mask under the nose or chin). Resting spots such as luxurious hammocks draped between trees are spaced out. The chairs at the pool were at least six feet apart from one another.
The staff was accommodating to every need that arose in our group. Breakfast and lunch were easily delivered to us at the Century Guest House and poolside. There were so many special little touches that elevated the stay. The beds were luxurious and the shower pressure magical. I especially loved the Malin + Goetz products. I'm totally buying the peppermint shampoo when I go home.
Dinner was delicious and the cocktails fantastic. The second night there was a surprise rainstorm, so my friends and I split a bottle of wine and relaxed in the library. We were able to safely spread out while indoors and enjoyed being surrounded by books and the smell of the fireplace.
I want to return for a week with my laptop (wifi guest connection is great) and write every day in such a peaceful surrounding. As much as I loved sitting by the pool, I am looking forward to a lovely fall day, surrounded by the fall foliage. The front desk staff told me Catamount Ski mountain is nearby, I may have to return for winter too!

Our time at Troutbeck was nothing short of amazing. First of all, the staff was beyond attentive and kind. My boyfriend proposed to me during our stay! I later learned that the staff not only helped coordinate the proposal (flowers, a beautiful bonfire at dusk, prosecco, etc.) but they also introduced my boyfriend to the photographer that took pictures during our surprise engagement. I am pretty sure that every single staff member went out of their way to congratulate us or make us/me feel special (i.e. “Hi, is this the future Mrs. Lee?” or “Please show me your ring!”. I felt so special, especially during COVID, because I knew I wouldn’t have an opportunity like this when we went home. I’d be remiss to mention that each staff member wore a mask at all times and some even wore gloves. They wore the mask properly, not below their nose. We stayed in a property off the main lodge because we brought our dog with us. Though the room was simple (which I loved), it was impeccably clean and inviting. We walked out to our own small deck in the morning and it was just beautiful to look at the estate in the morning. We also very much enjoyed the food during our stay. During dinner the first night, however, we both did not like our main meal because the chicken was prepared in a way that we were not familiar with. Our server noted that we both did not finish our main course and sent us an additional burrata appetizer that we raved about free of charge (we did not ask for it). I thought this was so sweet. She also came up with the most amazing cocktail for me after asking what I liked- I couldn’t even believe how spot on she was?!? The following day, we spoke with another staff member regarding our issue with the chicken. He said that they love to hear feedback so we spoke honestly with him. Troutbeck offered us dinner for two free of charge to make-up for this. I mean, really, how wonderful is that?! Everything else that we consumed there was delicious. Overall, our time at Troutbeck surpassed my expectations (not just because of the engagement). The property is just beautiful, well-kept, elegant, historic and just amazing. We were able to breathe fresh air freely and not worry about anyone being within like 100 feet of us. Thank you to everyone for making the weekend so unforgettable. I truly cannot wait to come back!

I had heard about Troutbeck & despite being told about bad service, decided to spend 5 nights there in early July after several months of quarantine. 2 hours from NYC make it an ideal getaway. The property is charming & the area has a lot to recommend it (the rail trail for biking) The problem is, that while new owners focused on design, they lack operational expertise.
There is 1 person at the front desk who doubles as reservations agent & concierge. No bellman. Because of covid, there was no housekeeping. We had to make our bed, change our towels, vacuum the floor and remove trash. Our safe needed batteries to work,& we had to install them. We were paying $800 a night. At the same time, I never saw anyone cleaning the public areas especially door knobs & high touch areas. The bikes were never wiped down between guests. There were no gloves, wipes, etc. The floor under our dining table had dirt, food, dust which remained there over the 5 days. There were no menus, wine lists or drink lists. The bar has charming small batch brands, but no traditional ones. There is 1 vodka. We ended up buying Tito's and tanqueray gin & our own wine. For meals, there were no choices. First night was pork belly (we don't eat that) and a small, lukewarm chicken breast. No bread. Breakfast was cold eggs, no toast. (potatoes, pastries we didn't want) Every meal was a disappointment despite the Chef's best efforts. We left feeling that there was no grown up in charge. Be warned!

Dear Nancy F, Thank you for staying with us and for your valued reply. I am sorry that you did not enjoy your experience at Troutbeck. You were with us for the first weekend after we opened after covid 19 and while our menu focused on local produce, we understand this was a limited choice and we have changed this and now have menus with added choices. With regard to hygiene, we had, prior to re-opening taken steps like no bellman or housekeeping service to limit the potential to cross contaminate for both guest and staff safety. We have a substantial covid 19 sanitation program, that includes additionally hired and trained staff. That said, there were other quality issues, specifically your food experience, that we should have done better on and I would like to address this and correct for you. If I can humbly ask you to call me at 845-789-1555 to I can address with you in person I would be grateful. Thank you again and warmest regards, John

Heard a lot of good things about Troutbeck but was overall unimpressed.
1. We stayed in a suite that cost upwards of $500 a night. There are little things I would expect given this price they failed to do.
-No coffee maker in the room (even cheap hotels do this). Instead you are forced to go downstairs to the ‘pantry’ where any foods or snacks or coffee have to be paid for. Want a cookie after dinner? That will cost you $2. It seems unnecessary to charge people who are staying in suites for these small items.
2. Noise: You can hear everyone shut their doors. The cleaning lady in the morning. It is supposed to feel private and tranquil but not when I can hear someone coughing in the hallway.
3. The common spaces are not large enough if there is a group of people. Feels like you are constantly running in to guests when the point of coming here for us was to be left alone.
4. Staff: Not very attentive and many times I had to ask for things twice.
On the plus side the rooms are clean with nice and amenities and the food in the restaurant is good. But if you are looking for a tranquil romantic getaway this is not the place.

Dear Luxetraveller77, Thank you for staying at Troutbeck and for your feedback. While we were delighted to see that you enjoyed your dining experience, our cleanliness and amenities but we regret that you didn't enjoy the overall experience. The Manor House was built in 1920 and yes, the rooms reflect this era in size and plan. I regret that your service experience was inattentive and that your stay was noisy. I would ask you to humbly call me at 845-789-1555 so I could discuss with you in person. With warmest regards, John

My husband surprised me with a trip for our babymooniversary to the massive property better known as Troutbeck. Our stay, although short was extremely special. We were upgraded upon arrival to the most beautiful room overlooking the creek and infamous red bridge. Our room had a fireplace and a sunroom, talk about getting snug!! We didn’t have to make dinner reservations, were seated swiftly upon arrival to dine and wished a happy anniversary. Dinner was exceptional, and we absolutely loved the house made foccia with whipped ricotta and olives, it was the perfect compliment to a heavenly meal. After dinner we went for a walk along the very well lit property and sat under the gazebo beside the brook. It was so peaceful to sit in nature and listen to the rain come down that night. BTW blackout shades are the best, and we also enjoyed the linens, because they were very comfortable. Finally, we snuck down for breakfast in the morning and finished our stay with cappuccinos in our sunroom.
This was extremely affordable and I highly recommend to anyone looking to get away for a night, especially now that Covid regulations are heightened. The entire stay from check in to check out was magnificent. You will not only have an incredibly clever, locally sourced meal but you will also be able to kick back, relax and enjoy the smell of the fireplace in the morning, if you’re not up for movement...which on a babymooniversary - I was just grateful for the purple chair in the living room beside the fire - if you’re looking for a massage they do those too, I personally just brought a few masks for my husband and I to do and we enjoyed spending time together along the property, and hope you can too. Also it’s worth mentioning that they are kid friendly and have options for children as well. 5/5

Why does everyone rave about the food here? We were most excited about the culinary experience, especially since dinner every night was a $75 three-course set menu with no other a la carte options (even though on the intake form they state that dinner will have a la carte choices). We were very disappointed. The food is not good at all, just very basic, bland, and poorly prepared. I've never tasted such a tough, chewy short rib in my life. And a piece of fish dumped on top of a mound of corn is not really worth this price. If you're going to keep it simple, which is totally fine, then at least make it tasty. Same for the lunch options. Ordered a turkey sandwich at the pool bar and got turkey and cheese on a burger bun, no condiments, no veggies. We also opted for a $180 picnic lunch, which was literally potatos, arugula, and a slice of eggplant on bread... It made us wonder: did Covid cause food supply issues? The overall service was also very slow and disorganized (if you opt to dine on the ballroom patio, they will forget about you; it took several calls to reception to not only confirm my reservation, but also to fix an issue where they charged me for daily breakfast even though it was included in my rate) and, to another reviewer's point, I did not see a single person sanitizing high touch points in the common areas, like doorknobs and handles, or wiping down chairs and tables between guests, so there's really no way to know whether those are ever cleaned. If not for these issues, Troutbeck would be an amazing property. We loved the hammocks, Adirondack chairs, and campfire sites strewn about the grounds as well as their impeccable tennis courts. It could've been a perfect getaway.

Just got home from the most wonderful weekend at Troutbeck! A quick 2-hr trip from NYC, Troutbeck was the perfect place to have a girls’ escape weekend. The property is stunning, and everything was in bloom when we arrived. The main house has amazing historical significance as a gathering for past literary greats such as Emerson, Thoreau, and Mark Twain and served as the site of one of the first official NAACP meetings. Charm and character ooze from the quaint and well-appointed communal rooms, several of which had fires going in fireplaces at all times. The on-site restaurant was lovely and the food was delicious. The staff were so friendly and helpful, particularly Alex who was instrumental in making sure our fireplaces and riverside fire pit were all set up. We did two yoga classes in the most extraordinary studio. Massages by Kelly and Matt were divine. We played (bad) tennis and enjoyed wandering the property. There was only one room left when we booked, and it had two king beds and a nice sized bathroom that perfectly suited our group of four. The entire hotel is beautifully decorated. COVID protocol felt perfectly followed by staff and guests, everyone was masked and distanced. Troutbeck is a great place for a celebration or group getaway. There was a 50th birthday happening while we were there, and I can see how it would be ideal for an intimate summer wedding. All in all, it was the perfect place to get away for some quality girl time. We left feeling rested and ready to plan our return visit!

We were pleased to be able to share this property with our friends this weekend, traveling as couples. We both thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Troutbeck.
We arrived early afternoon and were greeted by reception to let them know we were here. After which we waited for our room by a seating area near a stream. We were able to get drinks and a bite to eat from the pool while we waited for our friends. They joined us and we had a pleasant afternoon enjoying the beauty of our surroundings on the property.
Our rooms were located in a separate area near the main building. They were clean, quiet and comfortable; luxury bathroom amenities and Frette linens (so comfortable)!
Our dinner was delightful and an equally perfect setting on the terrace out-back. We all enjoyed our food and thought the plates were creative, locally sourced and intentionally designed with levels of flavor. The prefix menu was quite appealing to consider dining in a second night. The staff was pleasant and attentive. Please thank Brandon (I hope I have his name correctly?). He has a beard, well dressed and served us drinks Friday evening during dinner as well as Saturday night (along with snap-peas) before we ventured out. He was a joy to engage with.
Breakfast both days were exceptional. The quality of the food above what we would have expected, and even better on our departure day with Eggs (served scrambled/ omelette style), Sausage, Potatoes and we all agreed that Pistachio Croissant was one of the best we've had.
The small touches experienced on your property during our stay do not go unnoticed from personalized campfires, ice-delivery in picnic baskets, coffee to go (or delivered) on an early morning wake up before breakfast; the hammocks and seating areas set up throughout the property and genuine hospitality from your staff throughout and during dinner. I believe Liz was the overnight person who was attentive to our requests and very pleasant as well.
Your property is beautiful and given the options to both be able to explore on foot and bicycle Sunday morning capped off our stay. We enjoyed the Hot Saturday afternoon by the pool with refreshments and the pool menu had a great variety of offerings. It was a tranquil environment by the pool following a long hike through Macedonia Brook area in Connecticut (15 minutes away).
Thank you again for an amazing stay. We look forward to visiting again in the future.

Overall, a beautiful property with great history and very good food, but a terrible value, and extremely hit or miss service.
The good:
Beautiful, bucolic property, and a relaxing escape from NYC. The hotel has a storied history that really adds to the charm of staying there. Common areas such as the library, bar, and restaurant are cozy and very well styled, mixing an upscale modern feel with classic history of the space.
The food and beverage are very good, with fresh local ingredients. Service at the restaurant was strong and attentive.
Our room was very spacious and well appointed (though not at all worth the nearly $1k price tag).
The bad:
Our first impression of the hotel was being greeted by a receptionist who seemed to have little, if any interest of working in hospitality. We inquired if there was a possibility of checking in earlier than 4pm (hardly an outlandish request when paying nearly $1k per night) and were met with blank stares. The receptionist said they didn’t know where housekeeping was and didn’t offer any other solution. I asked them if they could please contact housekeeping to ask and they tried a single call, and then said sorry, no one is there. We left to have lunch, came back about 2 hours later to try again and received the same unhelpful response, this time with the added “I’ll try to contact you”. When I said there was no cell service on the property and asked how we might be contacted, we received a blank stare.
The property was filled with small children who had been allowed to completely take over the common areas with no regard for other guests. We literally had to step over toys and actual children in multiple common room areas, while carrying our bags, in order to get to our room, all while the hotel staff watched without saying a word. In the restaurant, children were running around, screaming and throwing toys. Food was scattered all over the floor that the staff did not clean up. It’s understandable of course that a hotel will have families and small children, but unacceptable to allow the level of rude disturbance that was happening to other guests.
Finally, the value for the hotel, food and drink is terrible. We paid $1.5k for a single night with breakfast lunch and dinner, including a $350+ dinner. While the food is very good, prices of $55 or more for a small entree (e.g. scallops) is very hard to justify. The same lack of value can be said for the rooms. Although we made a dinner reservation by phone about 2 weeks in advance, the restaurant somehow had no record of it, although luckily we were still accommodated.
We would still take a trip to stay again because of the beautiful property and good food, however there is a lot of work to be done to bring the service, overall experience and value to match with the reputation and visual appeal of the property.
