Detailed Reviews
I chose this guesthouse for my birthday, as I wanted to stay on a raft. We were lucky enough to get Room 10, which has the best views of the River Kwai. The room was really nice, as the walls and floor are made of bamboo, so it felt authentic. The beds were comfortable and we slept very well with the gentle movement of the raft on the river. You do have to ask for cleaning, but there are bins available for your rubbish and you can just ask for toilet paper or towels at reception. For the price, you can't expect full service. The restaurant is lovely, the food is excellent, all cooked fresh and very delicious and you can choose between the normal tables or sitting on comfortable mats both with great views of the River Kwai. We checked out really early and the manager organised for a taxi to take us to the train station.
The only room for improvement is the process for ordering food. Sometimes we would take a table and no one would bring a menu or we would have to ask to order.

I have been to this area many times, and wanted to stay in a room on the river. I couldn't believe the price, but booked it nevertheless. It turned out to be one of the great values, excellent locations, and completely quiet, so that one could hear the river monitors that sunbath on the bamboo barrier outside the bank of rooms on the river. Although the review I read was in error about the conditions of the facilities, that the toilet was the old style, in fact the room was clean, well laid out, and perfect for our needs for the price, 300 baht a night ($10.00 U. S.) There is a charming, airy, restaurant upstairs, from which one can view the complete length of the river, from bridge to bridge, and across to the other side. I took my morning tea and evening wine, as well as most daily meals from this restaurant. The staff are very hospitable and knowledgeable, and directed us to transportation, exhibits, and every worthwhile activity for which the Death Railroad on the Bridge is known. I learned that the guest house has already earned highest ratings. They are most often used by Thais. I was the only foreignor around!

Didnt stay here, but ate here every day while staying nearby... Food very good, price reasonable and staff very nice! I hired a motorbike and they did not want to keep my passport, only made a copy which was returned when I returned the bike... No cash deposit either :) They also booked me a ticket on a minibus to Bangkok, "slightly" more expensive but pickup from right outside, saved me having to get to the bus station with luggage (I stayed at Tara Raft, right next to VN) so very good value, Vans can be booked every hour during the day. I will 100% go back when I return to Kanchanaburi

Every disadvantage has its advantages.
VN guesthouse sadly had to close due to the coronavirus, they plan to re-open in July.
Of course, they will need to stock up on fresh produce for their restaurant. As expats and regular costumers, they were nice enough to give us the cheese they still had in stock for free. We appreciate it very much, and cannot wait until they open again so we can go for some of their
amazing meals.
They have the best salades and sandwiches in town, with of course the best cheese!
Their Thai food is also amazing, and they serve delicious fresh fish (reserve 1 day ahead).
Besides their restaurant they also offer good & clean rooms on the river against a very good price.
100% recommended.

One of the original riverside guesthouses and little has changed in around 40 years.
Beautiful views from the restaurant and rooms. Prices were good and the food was exceptional. Can be a bit noisy at weekends with Thai river discos and a nightclub across the river but the its still an exceptional place. Ear plugs free at reception.

+1
Stay in Raft Room 9 for one night.
The bedding was unusual for Thailand. The mattress was soft to medium firm, so very soft by Asian standards. There was no duvet. In place was what looked like a very large towel or thin cover. This didn't matter as Kanchanaburi was steaming hot and I set the AC to run at a higher temperature anyway. I slept really well anyway, so no complaints there.
The room also had a tall table with two high chairs, a clothes rack, a fan and two additional electrical sockets, one of which was just above the bed.
The bathroom was pretty basic and functional. I already knew this and understood that there are limits to what can be done in a floating hotel, so I don't hold that against the hotel.
The room had a balcony with beautiful views of the river. You can even feel the raft rocking whenever a large boat passes by.
Location wise, the hotel is on the river, about 15 minutes walk south of the train station. The main street with all the bars, restaurants and shops is less than a 5 minutes walk.
The hotel has an in-house restaurant sitting on an elevated position above the river offering awesome views of the river as well as sunsets. The restaurant had a Thai and European menu. The blue cheese salad is definitely worth trying.
Overall, I had a very good stay. If you want to stay on the river in something less rustic than a boat, then VN Guesthouse is a good option. The room is not all that comfortable, but not uncomfortable either. The only negative is the bathroom, but it's something you just have to accept unless you want a luxury boat.

Nice enough place for 2 nights. Bar is nice. We had a river view raft room which had a beautiful view, but was a bit dark and dingey and the bathroom is very basic. It is on a raft however so they can't be criticised for this.
Bar is relaxed . It does suffer from the occasional drain smells.
Very easy to walk to from the train station.
Nearest big street is only a 5 minute walk but sadly is dominated by go go bars.
Good value river view exploring base.

Stayed here for two nights during a tour of Thailand, easy access to the train station to access the Death Railway, amazing green Thai curry. Rooms overlooking the River kwai.
Only downside is the nightclub opposite is very loud and does not close until 1:30 am but the host does supply free earplugs

Good restaurant, but moody staff as often in Thailand. Problem, on the bank opposite, about 30 meters, a lot of noise due to multiple orchestras, as is often the case in Thailand... If you dream of tranquility, don't count on it before 11 p.m. or midnight.

Hi,
There are rooms that are not directly on the river - these rooms have an open verandah looking onto a concrete/stone walkway. The garden at VN Guesthouse is not the lush, green, grass-covered variety but rather a concrete/stone area with some plants. From memory, there is no barrier to stop your children wandering down the path to the river side of the guesthouse. If you look at the photos of VN Guesthouse you can see how the railings are constructed and decide for yourself if they are sufficiently safe.
In my opinion, as the guesthouse is close to the water and there isn't a garden for your children to run around in, it's not suitable for small children.
Rob is mostly right.
Walk straight out of the train station, cross the main road, NOW TURN LEFT AND WALK TO THE END OF THE BLOCK. Now turn right, with the cemetery across the street, you will soon pass the museum.. At the end of that road cross over this road and head down a narrow residential street, which is to the right, by the school. At the end of this street the road will turn right as you are now at the river. It'll be on your left with a row of motor scooters in front. Don't forget to take your shoes off at the entrance to the restaurant/reception desk.
I am a retired Geography teacher and remember details.
Dear Peggy J,
You may swim in the river!
If you prefer a swimming pool, there are a few options in the main road (walking distance) or there is even a waterpark nearby (short taxi ride).
Kind regards,
VN Guesthouse
