Found this guesthouse as one of the first ones that were free. The bamboo room price was OK - but for just 50 Baht more, as we found out later, you can have hot water in the other hostels. But with fan it was 200 or 250 Baht, so quite OK price (with hot water it was 350; the rooms at the riverside were around 500+).

As for the rooms, they were perfectly acceptable for the price, though we also saw some geckos (but didn't mind them). The rooms and beds were quite clean, the staff was nice to us - and also the breakfasts were fine. Fortunately, no karaoke sessions occured on the river, because the rooms have poor sounds insulation... The wifi was there - we even got the signal at the room.

Want to stay on a river bungalow with views of the River Kwai Bridge? Choose here - we've stayed here twice and, although the rooms are basic with lumpy mattresses, it's clean, cheap and the staff are excellent. The food is good too and you can even do a bit of fishing off their small pier.

After a slightly confusing email exchange, we arrived in Kanchanaburi to find that we did have 3 air-conditioned floating raft rooms booked after all... only in the original Sugar Cane Guest House rather than Sugar Cane II as we requested (there weren't enough rooms available). This was fine, as they appeared to have similar facilities and interchangable staff, and the original Sugar Cane is a bit closer to the middle of town.
Australians will know what I mean when I say the place had the feel of staying at somebody's holiday shack, and that's not an entirely bad thing. Like a typical shack, it was a great location, right on the water, but appeared to be constructed from whatever was lying around at the time, and sparsely furnished with mismatched pieces that would no longer be considered good enough to go in a "proper" house. Some people might object to this, but it gave the place a casual, rustic charm. And let's face it, for 550 baht you don't expect too much.
I have only a couple of major complaints. The first is, the air conditioner was an ancient, outsized contraption that was too big for the room and made a noise remenicent of a helicopter about to land on the roof. I actually got up a few times during the night and turned it off because the noise and breeze issuing from it was keeping me awake. Then, once the heat started keeping me awake instead I'd get up and turn it on again.
Another reason to get out of bed was that both mattresses (all the rooms seem to be twins) were very old, saggy and lumpy. The blanket provided resembled a giant towel - practical from a laundry point of view I suppose, but not substantial enough to protect me aganst the blast issuing from the air-con! I was staying in raft room number 1, and my companions in rooms 4 and 12 said their beds were fine, and they had different air-con units. There were a few different rafts, each with about 4 rooms, so perhaps the newer ones also have newer contents. Rooms 5 and upwards had their own partitioned verandahs, whereas the raft of rooms 1-4 has a communal deck area, although our group were the only ones that used it when we were staying.
On the plus side, the noisy Karaoke barges that everyone complains about didn't trouble us at all. True, it was mid-week, but we only saw a couple, early in the evening, and they were more entertaining than irritating. The long-tail boats zooming past first thing in the morning were much more disruptive... but we could barely hear them over the noise from the air-con anyway!
It was very pleasant sitting on the deck in the evening and watching the river roll by. The rooms were clean and the shower and toilet were adequite.
Via the front desk, we organised a tour that encompassed Erawan and Sai Yok Noi Waterfalls, the Hellfire Pass memorial (but not the train, since we'd caught the train from Bangkok) the Tiger Temple and the River Kwai Bridge. This was through Toi's Tours and was one of the highlights of our trip, except that our misnamed guide, Joy, was obsessed with time-efficiency, hurrying us along from every place, even though we had designed the schedule ourselves and there was no-one from outside our group that we were holding up. We didn't have enough time for a proper swim at Erawan Waterfall; we would have preferred more time there even if it meant we spent less time at the other places. Two and a half hours sounds like a long time, but it's quite a hike to the top (worth it though). We also booked a mini-van back to Bangkok, which was slightly quicker than the train, but less senic.
Getting back to the Sugar Cane, overall, for the novelty of staying in a room that floats on the water, it was worth it, but I would probably stay somewhere different if I went to Kanchanaburi again.

Sugar Cane 2 is located right on the river, with 4 raft rooms, 2 "superior" rooms and about 10 or 12 basic rooms. We checked out the superior rooms and the raft rooms - stayed in a raft room for 550baht/night. The room had a/c, fan, hot water and a small deck out onto the river side. While the room was small it was extremely clean and a great place to stay. The only detractions are the walls in the raft rooms are "paper thin" - hence if someone is snoring next door its very noticeable, and the floating disco/karaoke barges that are hauled along the river by very noisy "tugs" with the worst singing ever heard being pumped out, but these stop by 1 am or so and the majority of them actually go downstream from Kanchanaburi rather than upstream towards the bridge.
The food was very good and the open air dining setting was great.
Service was good and the staff were exceptionally friendly.
If you are looking for a 5 star resort, this is not for you, however for a low-mid priced accomodation this is excellent and is value for money.
It is walking distance to the bridge, but quite a way from town (taxi trip - 80 baht).

We have choosen to stay two nights in this well known hotel in mid-November 2007.

According to sereral guides and Internet references, this hotel is one of the best to try in Kanchanaburi... Sleeping on the river...

The view is very beautiful (as you can see on my picture, view from the room).

BUT

Sorry, there is a great but...

The rooms on the water are on the water... So can you imagine our night if we had "the chance" to stay at the same time of two (or three) sexual tourists? Our room was "moving" all the night and we heard "strange sounds" all the night (till 06.00 to be honest).

What can we say about this kind of tourism and the fact that the owner accepts those guys (fat old white men with young thais)?

I don't know but be carefull if you go there with children...

We spent the second night at the opposite of this hotel (CHITA NUN Guest House) and it was perfect (QUITE, rooms and so on..)

This was the second time I have stayed at this guesthouse. It is right next to the river, you can get rooms for 200 or 550 baht. The former have en suite bathroom, but with cold water. The latter are actually on a raft on the river itself. Each room has its own veranda looking out onto the river and an en suite bathroom with hot water.

There is a restaurant run by the owner, a lovely lady in her thirties. She is very calm and quiet and polite. The food is both excellent and cheap, and we (my parents and I) ate every single one of our meals there while we stayed in Kanchanaburi.

Check out the coconut shakes for 20 baht!

You can book the rooms via a website, and it is a good idea to do that if you want the houseboat rooms, as there are only 4 of them.

The rooms are clean, and it is a quiet area, other than the speedboats which roar up and down the river every so often, which is a bit of a pain. The guesthouse is located about a 10 or 15 minute walk away from the bridge over the river Kwai, and an 80 baht taxi ride from the main bus terminal.

Myself and my partner (26 and 29) stayed at Sugar cane 2 for about a week. It is a perfect inbetween location taking only a 5/10 min walk in either direction, one to the bridge and one to the night life.

You can chose a cheap 200baht option which is a small room but still about 10 steps to a shared decking on the river or you can pay 550baht for the floating rooms which are a great size and you have own balcony on river.

One staff member spoke very good English and despite the others having only menu basic they were all very helpful.

Please be aware that there are loads of geckos so if you are really scared of them do not stay in the floating ones. That said also most of the negative comments regarding this place are due to the fact that they are city people, you are more in country here.

The only downside which is very little is that the staff are almost too relaxed, there is no room clean (not that you need it if your a normal human being), we looked at the cheaper room which needed some TLC so stayed on river room, the last two nights a family that occupied two if the rooms either side of us, who were friends of the staff were very noisy and amplified due to thin walls.

The bed was hard (personal opinion) and pillow flat but asked for another which they gave without hesitation.

All in all a good stay. If your not fussed about staying in a floating room check out the bigger resort next door, not sure on price but they have a pool table and pool if your more a stay at home kinda person :-)

Originally planned to stay two nights but ultimately went back to Bangkok early instead. I just wasn't impressed with Kanchanaburi in general and this hotel fit right in with that over all sense of 'eh' (and a very strong distaste for the tourist area around the Death Railway/Bridge on the River Kwai).

Good Points:
- Sugar Cane 2 is on the river, and the food was fine. I enjoyed the vegetable Panang curry but it needed more hearty vegetables, maybe a sweet potato or pumpkin.
- The reception staff was nice. One man spoke English well enough to help me order a mini-van back to Bangkok (200bt to Mo Chit, which may or may not have been 50b too much) (he might have spoken more English, I didn't really try to ask him anything else).

Bad Points:
- Bring a towel (not provided) and probably your own sheets. There were small ants or some kind of similar bug on the bed and made me feel like ants or spiders were crawling on me all night. There weren't that many, so I doubt there were actual bugs crawling on me (no bug bites when I woke up) but seeing them made it hard not to imagine. There were spider webs hanging from the curtains to the light fixture, which didn't help.
- The light didn't always work. I think it had problems working when the fan was on high. I just switched everything off, waited a minute, and tried again and then it worked, but still...
- The location isn't great. It is about 10-15 minutes from the Bridge but that also means it is about 25 minutes from the train station. The bus station is a 10-15 minute tuktuk ride so not sure if it is walkable. It is just far enough from all of the other restaurants and bars that it seems inconvenient even though it really isn't actually far at all. Sugar Cane 1 is much more in the thick of things (closer to restaurants and bars and the stations) and isn't 100m down a dirt road towards the river like Sugar Cane 2.
- Bring your own bug spray because they won't provide any for when you're sitting at the patio restaurant. The setting was fairly lovely but I can imagine it would be terrible during rainy season (mosquito season).
- There was thumping distant music playing nearly all night (or at least until about midnight when I finally fell asleep). No idea where it is coming from and all you can hear is the bass.

Overall, cheap and can be booked on agoda.com so that's a huge plus but otherwise, I wouldn't stay there again unless all of the other 250b guesthouses are booked full.

I cannot remember every staying somewhere so unique, awe inspiring, and relaxing as this hotel. We stayed on one of the floating bungalows one night and then in one of the lodges the second. The rooms are typical of Thailand; the toilets were pretty poor - although Thai piping is smaller than Western piping anyway so this is expected - and the rooms were simple. Nothing fancy, just plain value.

You are paying for an experience, not a luxury apartment. If you travel to Thailand for cheap luxury hotels, jacuzzi spa's, and fine dining, then stay in Bangkok or travel down to Phucket. You might be forgoing the true culture and spirit of Thailand, but if that's what your about then go elsewhere (if that is you then I truly pity you). I however am looking to experience true Thailand; quirky and simple.

That epitomises this hotel; quirky and simple. The rooms aren't spotless, the beds don't feature Egyptian cotton, the rooms are not huge, but it is cheap, certainly cheerful, and the food is well cooked and presented to you by typically friendly Thai owners.

Please visit this hotel.

The location on the raft is great, but the rooms are dark and not very clean. The staff isn't really nice.
However, the breakfast is good, and the view is nice. It's also close to everything in kanchanaburi.
