Not far from the Kanchanaburi war cemetery and on the banks of the river Kwai, Tara Raft is a charming guesthouse with rooms literally floating on the river.

Our room had a balcony directly overlooking the river and the sunset views were superb. The room itself was clean, cool and had a comfortable bed and good bathroom.

For 900 baht, I highly recommend Tara Raft to anyone visiting Kanchanaburi and wish to be close to the city centre, war cemetery and the famous bridge (just 3km away).

by no means is this luxury. But then at £15 or less a night one would be a fool to expect. What it is is exceptionally clean, with huge beds (that take up the whole room almost) with good quality linens, balconies on the river kwai and lovely staff. Bathroom looks odd and I was somewhat concerned before the first shower, but it was lovely! Can't fault this and whilst we would prefer to be nearer into town (but staff happily ordered tuk tuks when required at about 50 baht a person so no rip off there) there are restaurants, 7/11 nearby and if you're fitter than us oldies, the centre is quite walkable.

When booking a room ask for one at the end of the raft - we were nearer to reception which means nearer to shore and therefore there was quite a lot of flotsam on the river (why people allow this beautiful river to be so polluted I do not know but that's not Tara's fault)

Definitely worth a stay if you're on a budget and want good rooms with good views and cleanliness

By the way, the wifi was exceptional ....

Every traveller has their own expectations and defines satisfaction based on their own requirements. The hotel Tara raft certainly fulfilled all of ours. From the instant we entered there was a feeling of comfort and satisfaction. It's situated right on the River Kwai at Kanchanaburi, jutting out into the river and the view out of our balcony was spectacular. you need to take off your shoes before stepping in, marking the Thai tradition of entering a home. The water outside your porch is close enough for you to touch and we could see an exquisite sunset beyond the calmly flowing river sitting on our bed. The staff is welcoming and caring, and there is a strong Wi-fi signal in your room which is free of charge. The breakfast, English style with bacon, was adequate and filling. There was a boat ride for 350baht in the evening, which took us along the river on a memorable boat ride to the Lawa cave, the war cemetery and Museum and finally to the river Kwai bridge. They do not serve meals but there is a beautiful restaurant just a munite's walk. Overall on a highly affordable rate of 900 baht, this hotel was all that was expected.

Decent value for money ($25 for a “standard river view” room through Agoda during peak season). A good choice for those who are taking the train as it is a short walk from the Kanchanaburi train station (I didn't time it but I would guess between 6 to 8 minutes, so taxi is not required unless you have loads of luggage). The room is small and snug, but I was actually surprised by how nicely they made up the room and bed for the price. Room #6, located to the right side of the hallway had a good view of the river but I'm not sure about rooms on the other side of the hall.

The staff were friendly and had no problem letting me check in early as soon as the previous guest had left. I rather appreciate the take-off-your-shoes policy before you walk the hallway down to your room.

The only unfortunate thing was that there was a noticeable odour in the bathroom when I first entered. The bathroom was clean overall, and the shower, sink, and toilet are all in good shape, so there is probably some bad plumbing in place. It wasn't serious and didn't bother me after the ventilation fan in the bathroom had been turned on for a while—but it's enough to be of note.

Also, be aware that there may be some less-than-friendly dogs on the side streets that lead to the guest house.

This hotel is a newer floating raft guesthouse. Our room was nicely furnished with a comfortable bed and flatscreen TV. The rooms are very small and those on one side face a floating junk pile/dump of sorts. Not so nice compared to the other side, which rooms face up the river.

The staff was friendly enough.

But unfortunately, our room and our friend's room had the strongest, most sickening sewage, human waste smell. I have stayed in many rooms with poor plumbing in SE Asia but this was one of the worst. If they can get this fixed it would be a decent value for the price. But until then, I cannot recommend this property to anyone with functional olfactory senses.

Room Tip: A room without the stink! And the river view side as opposed to the floating junk yard.

This is one of the several floating raft lodges right over the river khwaei. It is not fancy and nor do they charge you as such, but excellent value for money and the staff was nice and friendly.
All in all great value for money.

Beautiful views. Room is small but nice and clean. Has air conditioning, a safe, tv, minifridge and a mosquito net. Close 5 min walk to main tourist area with bars/restaurants.
Breakfast isn't very good but you can just go next door to vn guesthouse for more variety. Its cheap though.

The location of this hotel is first rate if you have one of the delux rooms rather than standard rooms which means your in the raft (900 v 750bt), no brainier for an extra £3 !

The rooms are very well equipped in general but with a few small improvements listed below they could be excellent. I won't list all the good point it would take to long.
- room safe not fixed, just placed in cupboard
- fridge, air on and everything else goes off when you exit room
- no where to hang a wash bag, or even the towels which mean they have to stay in the room which is quite small
- my biggest gripe is the lack of either I) a kettle in the room or I) free coffee in reception area which is very common for everywhere else I have stayed that don't have them in the room. It's c.40p (20bt) per cup to order, but this adds up and it's a pain having to find someone and ask.
-'they have a list of rules posted everywhere which indicated that they may have the type of people who don't follow normal behaviour staying there, but ther wasn't during my visit.
- DONOT stay here if you have a problem with stairs or can't carry your own luggage up and down them, the access from the street is over the roof and down, a long way
- not the hotels fault, but maybe they could speak to other hoteliers and sort out the constant flow of booze/music raft boats that go up and down the river, even though the river is wide, you can feel it on your chest and it ruins the tranquility.

The staff were excellent and it felt like they would happily respond to any request, with a smile, thank you for a lovely stay, I would certainly stay here again if i came, these comments are so you can perhaps look at a few things and get a consistent 5* rating that you would easily deserve.

Thank you again.

PS, if you want to see a rubbish hotel for just a few pounds less at the other end of the scale, see my other review or just visit reviews of property in town of this price range, they are rubbish

Had an enjoyable 2 night stay here. There are quite a few up and down steps to this place if you have any difficulty with steps then this is not the place for you. Lovely to be on the river. We had an end room which had a nice view. Rooms very clean but small. The down sides here was the bathroom. The shower is in totally the wrong place so once you shower you are walking through the wet floor to the sink and toilet. No food on offer during our stay. Reception staff often found it difficult to understand us so we had to sort ourselves out. Would I stay here again probably not.

They are private rooms and the double bed we had was huge as it was made up of two singles, a small gap in the middle but it didn't bother us.
