Booked for a six night stay at this beautiful place via Agoda. On arrival it was clear that the pool was empty. We were greeted by a lovely Thai lady who said " We are closed for ten days, did you book with Agoda. She had informed them of the problems, which included her husband gone away!!! Still they sent clients and unlike us, a couple stayed. It was important to us that the pool was available as we wanted to wind down for a week before returning to the UK. The lady was so sweet and also very sad about her husband, you could see she was close to tears.
We used her internet and booked elswhere, and she tried to speak with Agoda, but struggled with the answering machine. I email Agoda and am currently awaiting a reply.
We had a quick look around and the setting is wonderful, right next to the river. So if wanting to stay here, do not use Agoda, all others are acting according to her wishes, but not Agoda!!

My girlfriend and I stayed there for 1 night and two full days. Really have no complains whatsoever. Dennis was extremely helpful and a joy to just sit around and chat with. He helped us plan our two full days in Kanachanburi which included Visit to the Kwai River bridge and long tail boat rides and dinner for our first day/night. Second day we did Erwan Falls National Park, Elphant camp and the hot springs. In addition Dennis arranged our minibus ride straight from the hotel to Bangkok on our way back to Canada. I had an early supper at the hotel before our trip back to Bangkok and it was DELICIOUS, probably the best Thai meal during my entire Thailand visit (Cashew nut Chicken/ Red Curry Chicken/ Rice). The place has lots of character, amazing landscape, good size pool. The room and bathroom were very clean and great size too. The only thing I was slightly uncomfortable with is my pilow as it was too hard and not the most comfortable. But all in all it was great value for the price we paid. Next time I'm in Kanachanburi I will definintly be staying at Xanadu and I know I will be visiting soon as my time in Kanachanburi was too short and there's more I'd like to cover.

P.S. I would've attached pics of the place but my camera got stolen in Bangkok. So this part of the trip was lost :(

Nice enough place, decent sized clean pool, rooms small but clean, about 15 mins drive from attractions and food ok. Arrived and found owner having a beer which was fine but having driven all day it would have been nice to have been offered a cool drink. Night before we checked out we had all our cash stolen from our room while we had a meal about 30m away. The owner had assured us that there were no safes because we didn't need one. He suspected a staff member who did not return to work the next day and assured us it had been reported to police. He also promised us he would have our money returned but to date he will not even answer an e mail. Short advice stay somewhere else.

We had a confirmed booking here for august '16. After a 3 hour ride from Bangkok, we stood in front of closed gate with our small children. Some guy, who only spoke Thai, started waiving we had to leave when we tried to explain the booking. Phone number was disconnected. It turnd out the hotel was closed for maintenance but took our booking anyway (5 months prior to arrival!!!). It forced us to book a much more expensive resort on the spot, costing us money and stress. Owner never replied to emails. Avoid!!!

I had read some non complimentary reviews as I was checking my reservations last week before I left home.Over tge past two months the reviews for this resort became very bad indeed .I called Agoda booking to check that everything was OK and they assured me it was .This morning we arrived from Bangkok to find the gate closed and unattended ,the letterbox had been broken into ,always bad news .I opened the gate and walked into the resort towards the pool and could see it was empty .A woman called out to me that she was closed .There are people staying as there were towels hanging out on the rails .This place clearly has fallen on hard times and until it gets its act together Agoda should not have it on its website .I have paid for this appalling service and will be looking for recompense

OK folks you can forget previous comments, this place isn't worth the stay anymore.
Why?
1. Nee is not very well, but continues to put a brave face on, she is virtually running the place on her own.
2. Dennis doesn't appear to be around anymore as the place is in need of some desperate maintenance.
3. The pool was filthy, clearly not cleaned for ages. Unswimmable.
4. Deck chairs by the pool are a disgrace, not one sunshade in sight.
5. The rooms are OK, just, however the shower was a mere dribble.
We'd booked 3 nights here but left after the first one, there were also no other guests, not surprising.
It's a shame this place has gone downhill so rapidly as its in a nice spot on the river, with some loving care and attention and an upgrade of outdoor furnishings it could be good again.
In my opinion no blame can be apportioned to Nee, as I mentioned at the beginning, she is not well at all. As for Dennis, I don't care what people do in their private lives, but this should never lead to letting any business go to pot.
Thankyou Nee for your lovely appetisers, they were delicious, and good luck to you and everything you do in the future, you truly deserve it.
One more complaint, people reading this will probably have noticed that the owner can't be bothered to sit down for a couple of minutes and reply to the people who've put money in his pockets, obviously too busy with other things.

Response from dennis c, Owner at Xanadu 2008
Responded 21 May 2016
Very personal attack from someone i have never met.Where do i start. The pool and gardens were not so good as we had just had 2 massive storms causing a lot of damage and debris. The damage was that bad we are demolishing one building. The pool is cleaned thoroughly every 1 or 2 days.We were not busy as we had planned a 2 week holiday and had blocked all bookings a year ago.Cancelled this 2 weeks ago.I can see 3 parasols around the pool from where i am sitting.Have been full the last few days, even though low season, and 24 people had a great time.Nee is still the best cook in Kanchanaburi.Enough said.

We stayed here in September 2014 for three nights - we were two families utilising one family room and two inter-connecting rooms. From the first minute we arrived Dennis and Nee were so hospitable going out of their way to ensure our stay was fantastic.

Once I write the next line Dennis will know who is writing the review. We arrived Australian Rules Grand final day. We felt that we were in the middle of no-where being in a relatively small town on the River Kwai with one of us a Sydney supporter and desperate to see the game, Dennis ensured he found a satellite live from the game. We all watched the GF (partly in Russian at one stage) on the big screen and as we sat in the Restaurant /Bar area we felt like we were at home. Dinner that night in-house was fantastic; Nee and the staff are fantastic cooks. The one time we ate out in the town (although a nice waterfront River Kwai restaurant) never lived up to the food at Xanadu.

Dennis organised all our tours and outings - on one occasion we all split into three groups and went separate ways - no hassle for him.

The property is very nice; beds comfortable, pool lovely, bar and restaurant clean and a great place to chat and meet others due to there only being about 8 villas onsite. Breakfasts are HUGE ( Beware ).

Nee is amazing - I have never seen such a worker. If she isn't cooking. cleaning rooms, washing the laundry, mowing or chopping plants, etc etc she is giving you some delicious snack complimentary that she appears with a massive smile on her face. Corn on the cob, delicious sweets, chocolates for the ladies late at night to eat with their BIG glass of wine.

Dennis is so funny - we had such fun around the Bar area and became all too familiar with the drinks fridge ( am detoxing right now ).

At the end we were presented with the bill and it was so unbelievably inexpensive - us being a family of 5 ( the others a family of 4) - 3 nights, 2 dinners, 3 breakfasts, many many drinks, and many other items I cant even remember. We would pay this amount for one night at most other places.

I highly recommend Xanadu - just slightly out of town but well worth it - as it only is about $2 to get into town if you need to . Dennis and Nee, thank you so much for having us.

Very nice location, right next to the river kwai. Dennis, perfect host, made our very short stay a memorable one. To add to this, as we were pure vegetarians, they made wonderful vegetarian food for us specially at our request.

A second visit to Dennis and Nee's place didn't disappoint. Nee's home cooking was as fabulous as ever, and I'm sure the portions are getting bigger! Lovely, relaxing holiday with lovely people. The pool, gardens and scenery are gorgeous. The rooms are spotless and very comfortable. Price of food and drinks are surprisingly cheap, considering the food is so amazing! Can't recommend this place enough!

Hi Celine. We did not stay at this hotel because there was no one there when we arrived. We travelled to Kanchanaburi by train from Bangkok. There were Taxis available at the station when we arrived. In fact our driver introduced himself helped with our luggage and asked if we required a taxi as we were getting off the train. He has introduced himself as F. He took us to Xanadu 2008 Resort. he waited with us and then helped us to find and alternative accommodation when Xanadu let us down. He was brilliant! We then hired him for a further day to take us to Hellfire Pass and to Nam Tok. If you ask for F at Kanchanaburi station I am sure you will find him more than accommodating. Hope you enjoy your stay.

Dennis the owner is very quick with emails in our experience. He has a family cottage on-site but you need to ask him about how 3 children and 2 adults would go. I can't answer any question on flexible date bookings. It is a good base to travel from but is outside of the town area of Kanchanaburi if you want to more town based. Taxi's are not expensive and it may be worth the small cost of a taxi to enjoy the quietness of a semi rural setting. If you have a hire car, no problems!!!

Hi, Xanadu is located in the beautiful village of Nong Bua which has a bridge and lots of Thai restaurants on the river bank.About 15 minutes walk. Fishing is possible from our property although equipment is not provided. There are also stocked fishing lakes in the area.
