Hotel's Favourite
Probably the best place to stay in Negombo, we chose it for the last night of our honeymoon and it was just AMAZING, from the staff so attentive, polite and looking after you, friendly and calm at all times, to the lovely food during the barbecue dinner and breakfast, the fantastic massages at Waterland Spa and the private infinite pool. Cannot thank them enough for making us feel so welcome and happy during our stay. Totally recommended, we would have loved to stay a few more days!! Laura and Phillip, we stayed at the beautiful Peacock Villa.

I would say that the location is exceptional between the river and the Canal, is very quiet and perfect for wildlife watching. Villa are very well decorated, with private pool and garden, it has been built to keep intimacy guest. But most important, is the great team of Waterland and Mark the owner. They are very kind, professional and helpful, always insuring that you are happy. A plus that I really like as well is the flower decoration made every day by the team with the garden plants possibility, feel like in Eden I recommend 1000%

It gives us immense pleasure to hear how much guests enjoy their stays at Waterland. Surrounded by water, tropical plants, and towering coconut trees, Waterland does indeed feel like an oasis. Thank you for reviewing your stay and for taking the time to review so many aspects of your experience. We're delighted that you liked the unique setting, the tranquility, the decor, the private pool, the garden, the intimacy, and the service. The staff are extraordinarily dedicated and it's heart-warming that their efforts are acknowledged. The daily ikebana floral arrangements was a new skill we developed when we had few guests last year. The minimalist approach fits well with the feel of the property. We look forward to your return.

Checked in for a one night stay. When we checked in we asked if breakfast could be served to the room and they agreed. Following day morning refused and we had to go back without breakfast. The roof was leaking and our bed was wet so did not have a good sleep. We were asked to have meals out in the varenda during lunch with flies landing on our food.during night bitten by mosquitos. Even though the food was good we did not get the chance to enjoy it. Staff was not flexible at all. For this price would have expected more. Wouldn’t recommend to anyone or would not come back here.

We're very sorry to hear that you had a disappointing stay. Waterland has hosted over 8,000 guests in the 5 years since we built the place. During those 5 years, we have only had 2 other instances in which a guest gave the property such a poor review on Trip Advisor. 1 of those 2 guests had not stayed at Waterland and was simply disgruntled that they were charged for a room after not showing up. Your review was so disconcerting that I called a meeting of all the staff to identify what went wrong and how we could work to ensure that the issues you raised are addressed. Here is what emerged in that staff meeting. 1. There seems to have been a misunderstanding about your request to have breakfast in the room. Food in the tropics serve as magnets for bugs and even just a few crumbs can attract bugs. We never serve meals inside the villas. 2. Breakfast consists of multiple courses. It is augmented by tea/coffee, juice, and water. When we served breakfast on the private decks, we discovered that the food was no longer as warm as it should be by the time it was carried to the decks and that we could not offer the attentive service that is so important to us. Accordingly, 3 years ago we decided as a matter of policy 3 to serve breakfast only in the restaurant or on the restaurant patio. While this may seem inflexible to you, it is a decision based on experience. 3. We offer our guests the option to have their lunch (generally a 1-course meal) on their private decks. If it is raining, dining on the private decks is not an option. 4. My understanding is that you were given the option of having lunch indoors in the restaurant, but that you elected to have lunch outside. Generally, Waterland does not have many flies, but there are several times each year when the flies can be a menace all along the west coast. It's unfortunate that flies disturbed you during the lunch and prevented you from being able to enjoy the excellent food. 5. We're sorry to hear that you were disturbed by mosquitos. There are generally relatively few mosquitos at Waterland. We have taken great care to eliminate potential nesting places for mosquitos in the garden and we constructed the villas to minimize the intrusion of bugs into the villas. There are mosquito screens in the bathrooms and generally the only way mosquitos can enter the villas is if a door has been left open. As an added precaution against mosquitoes, 4 of the 5 villas including the one you stayed in have mosquito nets around the bed. My understanding from the staff is that you did not use the mosquito net. We're sorry that you encountered mosquitoes. 6. Regarding a possible roof leak, we have not received any complaints from other guests of a roof leak in that villa and when we looked for a roof leak, we did not find one. We will continue to monitor the situation, though. Roof leaks can be elusive. We have a repair person on staff and will ensure that any roof leak that is detected is immediately addressed. A holiday should be a joyful experience and clearly your experience was disappointing. We're sorry about that.
