Money: At $55 B&B not including lunch or dinner (Rs 500 extra p.p) this place is outrageously overpriced for what it is. On the final bill they also added $25 (Rs 3500) extra for the 4x4 to cart you and your luggage up the 3km dirt track to the lodge. We refused to pay that since it was not mentioned... More

We like bird watching but are far from experts and booked Martin's as it was right in the rainforest. The journey by jeep up to the lodge was an adventure in itself. The guided walks were great and we even saw a Serendip owl. We were well fed by the family who cooked real Sri Lankan rice and curry .... More

MARTIN WIJESINGHE, the owner is a local and has live on the land for ages. I always make a point of support the locals when visiting nature reserves, so they have an interest in preserving the habitat. Martin has a wealth of information about Sinharaja NR, and was one of the first to describe the nesting of the Sri Lanka... More

We have visited Martin's Lodge twice now. The first time was 19 years' ago when it really was a basic wooden structure with no electricity. Then we stayed three nights. 19 years on we were delighted to see brick structures with much better beds and mains electricity. We are sure that an overnight stay would now be much more comfortable... More

The access road to the lodge is an experience in itself and should only be attempted in the transport provided by the lodge. The location is truly amazing, and the dining area overlooking the rainforest canopy is quite special. Superb walks into the rainforest where there are a host of endemic species of plants, birds, reptiles and insects. A must... More

We knew from the reviews that we were coming to somewhere basic but decided that it was worth it for the location. It certainly is a wonderful and convenient location for walking straight into the Sinharaja rain forest if you are interested in birds [ and only if you are interested in birds]. I believe that you can put up... More

If you are going to stay at Martin's then it should really only be for one reason, that you are a birdwatcher and understand the small sacrifices that you will make from time to time in order to indulge your hobby. If you are visiting the forest, and you must, then leech socks are an absolute necessity - even with... More

We were dreading our stay at this hotel after reading the reviews, but as our expectations were so low it was actually much better than we anticipated! Yes the access road is truly appalling. After spending hours being driven on winding roads that gave me motion sickness, we then faced a 40 minute journey in a jeep on a very... More

Really, don't think of this place as a hotel. More like very upscale jungle camping. If you are outdoorsy, it is awesome; if not, stay away. Martin used to be a guide for scientists working in the forest, and now he has a place you can stay where his wife will cook (and we loved her rice and curry). The... More

I can only agree with all the criticism below. Without doubt the most awful accommodation we experienced on our 2 and half month tour of 6 developing countries!! The enforced 4x4 trip from the main road to the lodge can only be described as painful (and that coming from an African) as is the first sight of your accommodation which... More

“there are none!!! however if you are unfortunate enough to have to stay there make sure that you purchase your tickets for the park prior to the 4x4 transfer when you arrive in the village this will save you having to walk the 4km down to the main gate and then the same 4km back to the park entrance.”
