What a delightful place....great vistas, pleasant and welcoming staff and a sense of history that still provides a good bed, hot showers (not great pressure though) and a pool with a view. Yes, we'll certainly return.

Closenberg was located in the fantastic location. Infinity pool and pool bar add real value to the hotel. common changing rooms and wash rooms are not clean very well. Food is also averagely satisfied. Access to the beach is really easy with a short-cut route shown by the security guard of the hotel. however, that beach is not clean as...

Staying at the Closenburg hotel was the best of both worlds. It had the character of staying at an old colonial home but had all the amenities of a modern hotel. The food was consistently the best i had throughout my entire trip in the country. The staff were warm and friendly and helped you with anything you needed. A...

We spent one night in this old merchant captain's house. It was raining heavily when we arrived and we spent the afternoon drinking tea on the veranda feeling set back in time. Everything looks like it has been untouched for the last 100 years except perhaps for the new infinity pool. Untouched were also probably some essential parts of the...

We liked the hotel itself. It's pretty, the rooms are large and the views are beautiful. The tied-up mosquito nets over the bed at the ready are an interesting touch but the time has passed perhaps... they looked a little junky. I liked the location; it wasn't far from everything and you *could* walk if you were possessed to do...

This was a spectacular hotel with history as the estate of an old merchant. Whether you are viewing the ocean from your balcony or from the infinity pool equipped with full bar (make sure you try an Arrack cocktail- a liquor made from coconuts!) , you are bound to be in awe of the serenity of the rolling waves. The...

I'm sure that once upon a time this hotel was magnificent. But over the years, it has let itself get run down and now looks tired. It is run by the son of the now owner, who having other business interests has let the place run down. It has a lovely setting and you have to sign into a register...

View and location is spectacular. Old style is comforting. Only limited improvements can be done for an over a century old hotel. Over pricing of hotels in Sri Lanka is the norm. If not corrected Sri Lanka is going to to lose the market. Specially now with Airbnb

The view was amazing from the hotel especially from the infinity pool. However the rooms were very old and need updating. The beds were uncomfortable, the shower didn't drain properly. The service in the dining area was very good, very tentative. However in the pool area, I had to request for towels multiple times. The hotel has a lot of...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Closenberg was built by Captain Bayley in 1860 on top of a peninsula overlooking Galle harbor and the Indian Ocean. Since 1889 it belongs to the Perera Abeyewardene family and is today preserved as a heritage hotel. Large spacious halls, long verandas adorned with antique furniture and terraced gardens are in keeping with Dutch architecture. High ceilings resting on tall round columns and large louvered Teak doors set in arched doorways permit the flow of cool air. Alongside an experience of Sri Lanka's rich colonial past, we offer our guest a welcoming atmosphere, fine dining and an unparalleled view. Closenberg Hotel unique features are: The best location at the middle of Galle Harbor, Uninterrupted seaview from all our rooms, Direct access to beautiful sandy beach ideal and safe for surfing and swimming in all seasons, The unique and timeless elegance of an old Sri Lankan Heritage Hotel often copied but so hard to achieve, A sophisticated blend of service, tradition and cultural experiences Luna Terrace Bar Lounge is the funky trendy place to go and be seen in Galle. Great selection of cocktails, top brand spirits, tapas and fine cafe food. The new infinity pool overlooking the surf of Magalle Bay is a "must have experienced". Closenberg is the ideal gateway for enjoying the beauty of Southern Sri Lanka! ... more   less
