The Closenberg hotel is a definitely a classic example of colonial botique. The rooms are simple but elegant. The food is absolutely amazing, specially the local curries they are spot on! The luna terrace bar/pool is a masterpiece, that you definitely have to visit at least for a drink. The sunset point is just stunning overlooking the indian ocean, the...

This hotel is an historic gem and has been run by the same family for several generations and you almost feel as if you are staying in a large private house. The position is outstanding on a promontory into the beautiful bay where you can watch people fishing and learning to surf standing up. It is also quiet and peaceful....

This is a gorgeous historic building with an incredible view of the bay and wonderful grounds with beautiful tropical landscaping and garden features. The Closenberg is regal and grand, yet fits in with the scenic environment and nature of Sri Lanka. The food was the best I had on my trip, and its just a really cool and beautiful place...

I had the most amazing Sri Lankan food sitting outside below a terrace of bougainvilleas. The formal black tie waiters served the most elegant spread of curries, fresh vegetables, and divine desserts. The lime tea is also a must! The elegant ambiance of the Closenberg Hotel is only rivaled by the Closenberg food, and breathtaking views. As a solo traveler,...

Amazing food (probably the best sri lankan food there is), very friendly staff and awesome location overlooking the surf. The hotel also got an infinity pool and a real nice pool bar. Most definitly worth a visit!

What a delightful place....great vistas, pleasant and welcoming staff and a sense of history that still provides a good bed, hot showers (not great pressure though) and a pool with a view. Yes, we'll certainly return.

Closenberg was located in the fantastic location. Infinity pool and pool bar add real value to the hotel. common changing rooms and wash rooms are not clean very well. Food is also averagely satisfied. Access to the beach is really easy with a short-cut route shown by the security guard of the hotel. however, that beach is not clean as...

Staying at the Closenburg hotel was the best of both worlds. It had the character of staying at an old colonial home but had all the amenities of a modern hotel. The food was consistently the best i had throughout my entire trip in the country. The staff were warm and friendly and helped you with anything you needed. A...

We spent one night in this old merchant captain's house. It was raining heavily when we arrived and we spent the afternoon drinking tea on the veranda feeling set back in time. Everything looks like it has been untouched for the last 100 years except perhaps for the new infinity pool. Untouched were also probably some essential parts of the...

We liked the hotel itself. It's pretty, the rooms are large and the views are beautiful. The tied-up mosquito nets over the bed at the ready are an interesting touch but the time has passed perhaps... they looked a little junky. I liked the location; it wasn't far from everything and you *could* walk if you were possessed to do...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Closenberg was built by Captain Bayley in 1860 on top of a peninsula overlooking Galle harbor and the Indian Ocean. Since 1889 it belongs to the Perera Abeyewardene family and is today preserved as a heritage hotel. Large spacious halls, long verandas adorned with antique furniture and terraced gardens are in keeping with Dutch architecture. High ceilings resting on tall round columns and large louvered Teak doors set in arched doorways permit the flow of cool air. Alongside an experience of Sri Lanka's rich colonial past, we offer our guest a welcoming atmosphere, fine dining and an unparalleled view. Closenberg Hotel unique features are: The best location at the middle of Galle Harbor, Uninterrupted seaview from all our rooms, Direct access to beautiful sandy beach ideal and safe for surfing and swimming in all seasons, The unique and timeless elegance of an old Sri Lankan Heritage Hotel often copied but so hard to achieve, A sophisticated blend of service, tradition and cultural experiences Luna Terrace Bar Lounge is the funky trendy place to go and be seen in Galle. Great selection of cocktails, top brand spirits, tapas and fine cafe food. The new infinity pool overlooking the surf of Magalle Bay is a "must have experienced".
