I stayed at the Shoresh Hotel for five nights in August 2005. I booked the stay based on the information I found on the internet. Basically, I wanted a hotel near Jerusalem that's quiet, clean, with fresh air, hiking opportunities, shabbat services, an indoor pool and spa, internet access, onsite laundry and meals available. All these were offered for a total of $535usd.

First, I'll discuss the things I loved about Shoresh Hotel. The view was incredible! You could see the Judean Hills surrounding Jerusalem from the 6th floor rooms in front, as well as from the dining room and bar, several sitting areas and on a hike around the hotel. The view from the outdoor pool was further south, but just as beautiful. There were all kinds of flowers, including morning glories, rosemary, rose of Sharon and honeysuckle. The scent was never overwhelming, but was a delight at all times.

I chose the B&B package (the hotel is kosher dairy, but not shomer shabbat), thus had breakfast every morning between 7 and 9. There were about five large tables of food choices, two hot; and two tables of drinks. The menu was slightly different every day, but they had fresh pancakes and omelets every day. The dining room has a large deck which is best early or late in the day during the summer heat. By the way, there was always plenty of cold drinking water available in the lobby.

The room was basic, but the bed was comfortable, the tv offered a large number of channels (including CNN, BBC, ESPN, MTV, several Hebrew, English, Arabic, Russian, French and Polish channels, most with Hebrew and Arabic subtitles), and it had the most perfect shower I've ever experienced. It was a hand shower which was very easy to adjust, in height, and to any pressure from gentle shower to torrential downpour. My room was quiet -- none of the traffic or construction noises that you get in the city. This hotel is at the top of a "mountain".

The pool is huge and has several waterfall features that are delightful. It had a popular gathering place for chatting with new friends or reading adjacent to it under a grove of shade trees. Did I mention the view?

This was my first trip out of the states, so I didn't want to drive. The hotel had a bus station out front, with hourly buses (#186) between 6:30am and 11:30pm every day for 14.50nis (about $3.30usd). There were never more than a dozen passengers, and the views were marvelous. The narrow, twisting mountain roads and the heavy traffic near the city were daunting, thus I was quite satisfied with riding the bus.

Now for downside. My room seemed clean, but there were several large ugly stains on the carpet. The ac was borderline. I always felt like I needed a shower when I was in my room. There was no clock or radio, and the tv had no sleep timer or alarm.

One of the problems I had was with the staff. They always seemed to be too busy to answer questions and no one spoke English very well (I am working on my Hebrew, but most of it is prayerbook, not travel, related). Most of the information about the hotel was written in Hebrew. I didn't find the laundry facilities until the last night I was there, and only because I ran into an English-speaking guest who spends his summers there. The hours for the pool and spa seemed rather arbitrary, so it was difficult to schedule time for them. There was no indoor pool, as advertised, nor was there an internet station. I never did find out about shabbat services, so I spent the day reading and relaxing. A simple information sheet in several languages doesn't seem to be too much to ask for. When I complained (as nicely as possible) about the lack of laundry and internet, I was told that I should inform the website that it was wrong.

The hotel is part of a complex with cottages and apartments for families and long-term guests. The pictures in their online ads are confusing. I wasn't quite sure of which building I would be in. My room was in the old Shoresh Hotel ht------------ and ht-----------. The exterior of the large modern building is actually the apartments behind the hotel. All the interior shots are very accurate. The picture of the hotel room looks exactly like mine, sans carpet stains.

Anyway, it was a very restful yet invigorating week in the country, and I do recommend Shoresh Hotel, especially for families with children.

Each unit is a little suite with a private entrance, very close to where you can park. It's really in need of updating of the living room furniture and renovation of the floors, but the bed was comfortable. Flat screen tv in the living room and an old tube tv in the bedroom. There's a patio right outside the living room with a bbq grill, but it seemed a little buggy outside. The bedroom window is screened. The two air conditioners worked fine - and it was unusually warm for mid-November. The wifi worked well.

Breakfast is a little weird in that it's brought to your room in a basket (in a variety of little plastic throwaway containers), and you can't just go to a dining room when you want. The earliest delivery is a little after 8am which is a little late if you need to get going. I was alone and got (from memory): two rolls, some salty "bulgarit" cheese, some slices of yellow cheese, some Tehina, a hard boiled egg, a rather generous fresh vegetable selection of cut-up peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes and carrots, some goat butter (!) (didn't try it) and some sweet jam. There might have been olives. And there was a liter of cold, sugary Prigat orange drink. So maybe the selection wasn't what you would expect in a hotel dining room, and a pastry would have been welcome, but I can see the attraction of having the basket delivered if you don't need to leave the hotel too early. Coffee was from the Red Mug instant packets available in the room together with the electric kettle - and there was a half liter of UHT milk in the room fridge. If you're a tea drinker, bring your own since they only had the dreadful 1 gram wissotsky bags.

It was very quiet all night and in the morning. The breakfast delivery guy had a fairly silent electric cart so I don't think it would have bothered the neighbors. A little investment in updating the unit would make this a special place.

What I like:
This place is located at the top of mountain so on a clear warm Sunny day you can see forever, great views.
They bring breakfast to the room which is very nice, if the weather is nice you can see outside at the Picnic table and enjoy the view.
The staff was very nice & attentive
What I did not like.
Only SOME rooms have Internet. Ours did not. To get internet you must be close to the reception - or Go to the reception.
To save money the room heaters turn off when no motion is detected, sounds great except when you sleep the room get turn very very cold.

Beautiful view from room.
Nice shower . Didn’t know we had to turn on boiler so we had cold shower.
Poor breakfast (this comment is mentioned in many reviews here, seems it’s not heard). No forks knifes or spoons in room, not even 2 dishes.
Nice wall painting.
Good price .
Nice size unit

Dear Razi, Thank you for your evaluation. we do listen to the comments and will take yours into account. As we do not have a dining room, breakfast is delivered to the rooms. It is defined as a continental breakfast but offers much more than bread, coffee, juice and butter. There are also cheeses, eggs, vegetables and olives. There are people that enjoy it and I regret that it is not your case. We are planning to suply basic dishes in the near future. my apologice about the boiler, since the rooms are independent, the boiler and the air conditioning are managed by the guest. it is writen in the room information but will find the way to better inform this. Will be happy to host you back in the future. The management

We were here for 3 days. The place is nice but our toilet didnt work. We asked twice to fix it but this didnt help. We were disappointed by the service. When we got back home, we reported this to management, but had to make several phone calls until we were heard.

The view is super - on the hills to Jerusalem. The units are separated, standard, no extras for the price. It includes a bedroom, a bathroom, a kitchenette and a living room with sofas for children and a small patio. The equipment is poor. A rich breakfast is brought in picnic baskets to the room, between 8 and 9.Ithe pool is up a hill in the moshav (the village), and reachable by steps or car.
There is a restaurant named "muse on the hill" (mousa bahar in Hebrew) which serves very good lunches.

The Kibbutz Hotel Shoresh is a collection of Bungalows with two rooms incuding a kitchennette. THere is a nice view over the Judaen Hills. The Bungalows are well kept. When we were there, there was construction close to the hotel (but little noise). That made it a little difficult to find the hotel. It takes 15-20 minutes to get to Jerusalem (with no or little traffic) and for us it was nice to be in a quiet area after the big city. A number of nice restaurants in neighbouring villages and cities, if you dont want to go to Jerusalem.

We rented a villa here for two weeks and never wanted to leave. The stunning views over the Judea hills with the magnificent gardens all night lit were so romantic. An ideal wedding venue and the daily breakfast basket delivered to our porch was a lovely touch. An amazing infinity pool I would highly recommend this venue for a romantic getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. Public transportation was on schedule. We did not need to rent a car.

A super first stop in Israel for our family of 12. We booked 4 bungalows and enjoyed a day relaxing together and playing in the pools. Breakfast hamper super fun but really a lot of food. They even thought about the kids and what they might like. We arrived late and night receptionist helped a lot with finding us takeaway pizza who would deliver. All staff were friendly and always helpful. It was a happy place and very beautiful setting. Liked it so much we would plan to go again.

The beautiful surroundings contrasts drastically with the apalling level of service. The breakfast was basically old rolls in plastic bags preserved (not fresh) milk a few pieces of cornflakes and some cheese. We asked for a blanket for the baby which took almost an hour to arrive by which time she had fallen asleep and was woken up by the service people. The room had very few ammenities, no wi fi, the cheapest coffee (again with preserved milk). The pool was far away, and packed full of locals (the pool does not belong to the hotel). In short I would steer well away from this place.
