We arrived in Manado in the early afternoon. The Sam Ratulangi International Airport is of medium size and don't expect much of shopping or services. There are a few scattered cafes and handicraft shops but nothing to wow you during your return home. There is a Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf in the transit hall and a Starbucks just outside...

We stayed a week, two families with kids, at the Gangga Island Resort. The snorkeling and diving was fantastic, the food was really delicious and the staff was really nice and helpful. We can only recommend for people to go there to relax, snorkel, dive or all of the above.

On the tip of a small island near Manado in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, lies Gangga Island Resort & Spa. The resort's wooden bungalows are discreetly set on the edge of a long, white sand beach in the shade of coconut trees which got me interested in this place. This resort is lovely. The food and service were excellent. Very well maintained dive boats and diving was a sensory overload. Warm clear water, with little current. Healthy reefs, beautiful soft and hard coral. We also dove at Lembeh. To our surprise we saw all the same critters at Gangga. Simply the best!

Many expensive ultra-luxe resorts could learn from Gangga Island. It has been running for a long time but ages imperceptibly and very gracefully - because it is small, the design is timeless and the resort is in harmony with its environment. The island itself is part of an archipelago of islands off the NE tip of Sulawesi, close to Manado....

My first impressions were great as the Island looks like a Maldivian island from circa 1990s, ie simple bungalows and a beautiful white sand beach. However on closer inspection the resort looked really tired and was in need of a bit of maintenance. I was there primarily to dive and the dive operation was as expected, with two tank dive...

“Room 9A was fabulous and one of the closest to the beach front (although all area max 50 steps so this is not a big deal). Lower room numbers are closer to amenities and in hindsight this would have been helpful. Forgot something before diving and had to run back to the room could take >10 mins round trip!”
