We stayed at Gajah Biru twice, first on arrival to Ubud and then again as a stopover from Mt. Batur to Gili Islands. Tucked away from the main road of Ubud yet close enough for people to be able to walk it to the main road, Gajah Biru (meaning Blue Elephant) is very well located. They have tie ups with local drivers and taxis and will be happy to arrange pick ups from and drops to the airport. In fact, the hotel had arranged for our transportation to whatever sites we wanted to visit from Ubud.
The property itself is not large but is extremely cosy. The number of rooms are limited but the rooms are large. We had booked a family room that was very close to the swimming pool and had its own balcony. On our second visit we had the private family suite at the back of the property, which also features a private pool. The rooms are fairly well appointed, especially the more expensive private family suite. However it was the hospitality of the staff I recall most. Whether it was something they needed to fix or a service they needed to offer or simply a good morning wish, the staff was always super friendly. They were trustworthy enough for us to leave our daughters at the spa for a massage while my wife and I went for our own spa treatment to the nearby Tjampuhan Spa.
The only thing this hotel lacks is a restaurant. Nonetheless they will give you breakfast coupons with which you will have to walk less than 50 metres to a restaurant at the beginning of the lane where you get excellent breakfast. The staff at Gajah Biru will also serve you food from the restaurant for a relaxed in-room dining experience. In addition, this place is within walking distance of a bunch of warungs where we (I in particular) gorged on excellent Nasi Goreng that was washed down with Bintang Radler.
If I had to sum up, I'd say Gajah Biru is an excellent place for people who are looking to spend some quiet time in comfortable and clean surroundings without having to burn a hole through their wallets. For us, it was everything we had hoped it would be.

Visited from 1st December to 5th December 2019.Small Good Rooms, Loved the Hospitality of the staff, but on the first night when we reached at 2 AM it looked like scary place coz very less lighting was there. Also if you are afraid of insects then you must not go to this place though i don't mind small insects coz place is full of greenery and all rooms made of wooden. But I am afraid of lizard 😑 it was there in room. But if you want a peaceful place to stay you can stay here. Otherwise at approx.2700 INR (40 USD) (we paid for gajah biru) per day you can also find many other places in UBUD to stay.

We booked & stayed in the double Jasmine bungalows with the private pool, and really enjoyed our stay. Gajah Biru is located down a laneway with one-way traffic, and though there's no immediate car parking at the front, there's a shared space quite close by. The bungalows are not super shiny & new, however they were comfortable, a nice design; fairly spacious, clean and tidy with ample cupboard space and good sized bathroom areas, patio/verandas and reasonable air-con. Also supplied with water dispensers. The staff were friendly & helpful. The grounds were lovely, green and well tended. The spa massage service was good value. There are some nice shops & cafes nearby, and it's about a 20 min walk into the centre of Ubud, and about 15 mins to the Bintang Supermarket ... The only issue was that the mattresses could do with being updated, as the springs felt worn and a bit lumpy.

This quaint resort was offered on a travel website at a huge discount, dropping the price from over $300 AUD per night to about 69.00 - and at that price it was worth it. Any higher and you would be compelled to complain. Set in an aging bungalow the two bedrooms are in need of painting and the setting is more shabby than chic, the pool is ok, and you do have a private pool so that was nice. It was all just a little run down and no one came with clean towels or sheets, there is no breakfast. That said you can get out and about into areas of Penestanan to visit cafes and gelato bars and local eating places with ease. So yes, consider it if it is on special, but full price forget it. The staff on the last day were very helpful but the first two days they were definitely missing in action.

We stayed 3 nights at Gajah Biru in their Cinnamon room and found it a mixed experience. It’s a good location in a lovely garden of flowering plants with a pool and we’d wake to bird song. The staff were friendly and helpful and their family’s restaurant across the lane, Two Sisters, was quite good. The ceiling fan and ac both worked well which we were glad for. The problems we had are fixable and we shared them with the owner so hopefully they’ll be repaired for future guests. The thatch on the ceiling of the room sheds an unfortunate gritty dust that is particularly a problem above the bed. They have cardboard laid high above the bed between the 4 posters to catch most of it, but it doesn’t extend across all of the bed and we’d wake with sore throats from what fell during the night. Our sink had trouble draining and the shower was only a trickle, but we think the head just needs replaced. There were also quite a few bugs in the bathroom, but that’s not uncommon in Bali and there was a shy little toad who would come out at night to eat them. :)
We also suggest that during such hot weather the hotel not put heavy European style duvets on the beds but just thin sheets. We give the grounds and staff a 5 and the shower and bed a 1. If repairs are made we would stay again, but we’d check the room first, and hopefully the other rooms don’t have these issues.

Had a nice stay at Gajah Biru during our quick business trip in Ubud, despite the small road and the lack of parking spot. We had a spacious veranda room, and I just loved how serene and peaceful it was there. Friendly staffs, nice breakfast, big pool, cute cats, and I had a very amazing 2-hour massage.

Booked 4 nights at GB, when we arrived after a long and busy day we were told that we would be spending one night in the room we had booked and the other 3 in another room due to overbooking and the other customers taking priority. We were not happy with this, hoping for a relaxing stay in Ubud and were not keen to have to move rooms after treking to the volcano! We went for dinner that night, accepting of the idea of moving rooms. However, once we returned from dinner we were told that now our reservation for 4 nights was not possible and we were only able to stay 2 nights, again due to overbooking. We had nowhere else to go and due to it being high season our options were limited.

On top of this the WIFI is rubbish and there was a hair in the bath. The air con is unbelievably loud and does not turn off.

I'm sure this hotel would be very nice if we were able to stay here for the length of our booking in the room we booked.

Far from central Ubud

Readers of Trip Advisor, please do read our respond. Dear Sophie and Lauren. We had close to 378 guests stayed with us in the last 100 days. every review we get is, kept as a reward and trophy. we love what we do. yours will be kept as a reminder and a lesson as well. sophie, please do read your own last two lines on the review, I do not have to say much about it, you have explained it all yourself. you wrote the review while still in the property a day before checking out and i received it. strange, wifi being rubbish. You did not mention in your review that: you both enjoyed the best suites on the property for two complimentary nights, home cooked breakfast served in your room was savored , free shuttle to Ubud was provided and the special hand made name plates you packed in the back packs while checking out from GB, and, of course no eye contact with me. Hope you both enjoyed our Balinese hospitality. Your stay with us was a lesson learned for us all. We have not done any favor to you, good and bad all exist. defeating some one is not our ways, we always look for how to win the hearts. Gajah Biru did the (dana punya) meaning, help the needy or DONATIONS. Well, you both are young, back packers, travelling the world on budget. I am not your father, teacher or guru. would still like to suggest, please try your best to be honest, have some ethics, be a pride citizen of UK and walk with integrity while visiting our lands. You did bring tears to one of our best staff member while shouting and using very harsh words during check in. Avoid that during your travels. wishing you both the very best. my name is surinder but all friends call me (surrender) and I love it. sumi and surinder

We stayed from Christmas Eve to New Years day...Our family booked both rooms of the Jasmine suites and it was even better than we expected. My review will answer some of your questions.. we were greeted at Denpasar Airport by two Gajah Biru drivers who could not have been more welcoming, gave us bottles of water and delivered us a bit dazed and confused (long day and tired) to the hotel which is situated down a tiny laneway. It is like a small gated slice of paradise, when you step through the beautiful green doors in the wall you are surrounded by tinkling water, lush tropical plants, trees and flowers and quirky little hidden sculptures.and even a gift of personalised name plates which we hung in our garden. We absolutely loved it. The Jasmine suites are private, you have your own pool which is bigger than the pictures show and we spent many many hours lazing away on the comfy daybeds and softly playing music in our own bale' (say bar-lay). If you are up early you may catch a glimpse of the serene old lady in traditional dress coming in to lay offerings and light incense at the tiny temple in the gardens. Wonderful! The rooms are huge, the beds are firm-ish and very comfortable, the air-conditioning is excellent but we just flung open the windows and shutters during the day as there was a lovely cross breeze. The bathrooms are the biggest I have had seen in a hotel and very clean, they included large four door closets (beautiful timber) with more shelves and hanging space than you can fill - plenty of coat hangers ! I must mention all the special touches that made us feel welcome (I think the owners must be travellers because they seem to know exactly what visitors want) in our bathroom were pump bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash and hand wash, fluffy soft turquoise towels- lovely. We were given slippers, toothbrushes, shaver, hair dryer, clothes washing powder and mosquito coils and matches. And even though we were there in the rainy season it only rained briefly twice and I never saw a mosquito for the entire ten days. We sat outside - no problem. We had tea and coffee making facilities and a toaster griller. On our verandah we had a 20 (?) litre water dispenser - pure filtered water. We had a DVD player and a drawer full of new release dvd's all gratis, we also had cable tv, but you'll spend all your time in the bale' or pool. The pool is sunlit in the morning and dappled shade in the afternoons. with plenty of pool toys, lilos and pool noodles to laze around in. It has jungle type plants on two sides, I could see banana trees and papaya.. and we welcomed tiny squirrels and geckoes and a very friendly little wading bird made himself known. Beautiful butterflies wafted around from time to time... yes paradise !
Now just outside the entrance to the hotel are two small shops that sell everything you will need, beer, wine, soft drink, ice creams, toiletries etc.. and they are cheaper than the big supermarkets. There is also a laundry (very cheap, the clothes came back beautifully pressed and folded) it's about 15 steps outside the gate. And car and motorbike hire and tour booking shop also just short steps across the lane. At the end of the lane, less than 100 metres, starts a small road lined with restaurants, including vegan and vegetarian and even a bakery. It's an area frequented by trendy expats. You can walk into Ubud, it's a bit up and down but very pleasant and very interesting so make sure you take lots of pics. Its a short walk to the entrance to the Champuhan ridge walk (google it - hidden away but a definite must if going to Ubud) The hugely popular Alchemy is a short walk as is Bridges (famous for fine dining) but our favourite place was the Gajah Biru restaurant just across the laneway. Our favourite table ? the quirky sewing machine tables of course ! Breakfast was provided and we preferred to walk across to the restaurant and chat to other guests rather than have it delivered to our room. My favourite breakfast was definitely the Indian breakfast, my husband preferred the scrambled eggs and tomato and the kids loved the pancakes. We ate some of our lunches there and also had them delivered poolside.
The staff ? absolutely wonderful .. Mandy patiently helped us with trying to learn a few words of Balinese, I loved how he would explain little pieces of Balinese culture to us. When our husbands spoke to Mandy about a cycling tour he organised it all for them. They came back raving about it being the highlight of their holiday - thanks Mandy!! Gede always has a smile and is gently helpful. If it looked like rain he bought out umbrellas for us and insisted we take them .. he looked after us so well .. Yantie - so sweet and super efficient, if we needed a driver she had one organised pronto. The staff invited us to a party on Christmas Eve and we were extremely honoured that they had cooked a suckling pig for all the guests, then we were invited again to a New Years party and the staff cooked us traditional balinese food which was superb. We took many photos of ourselves with the fantastic team at the hotel. I loved the gardeners .. big smiles and always a 'selamat pagi' everyone so warm and friendly.
We have been to Bali 12 times and Ubud twice. This was the most relaxing holiday I have ever had in Bali. We came for the culture, food and scenery and we definitely got that at Gajah Biru and Ubud .. we also left feeling like we had become their family for the length of our stay. We love this place and will be back. (we missed the owners this trip as they were away on holidays - would have loved to try the indian food everyone reviews so highly - next time?). BTW .. any of the other rooms look fantastic - big airy verandahs, crisp white linens ..we peeked in- it would be hard to choose which one to stay in. This hotel gets my 5 stars for location, beauty, serenity, cleanliness and friendliness.

Just see the pictures and be the judge for yourself. I am not sure who is leaving good reviews for this place they must be homeless or sleep under a bridge if they think this place is nice. Please do not make a mistake booking here look at the pictures I have uploaded and see if this is a place you want to stay. This was a complete nightmare. Please please stay away as far as you can. The employees at this place were telling me they are ashamed of working here. I do not know how else I can warn people from staying away from this place.

Dearest Unhappy Amir, First of all, we are truly apologise for such a disappointing feeling that you have while your visit to our property. We cleaned all the area that you have shared but that is spots unable to cleaned due to the age of facilities but "today we just change it". My suggestion is you would look much handsome if you don't share racism opinion by saying 400 more guest that ever stayed with us as homeless or sleep under the bridge, please be human :).
