Rokeby was built in 1840 by Captain G.N. Cauthy and is one of the landmarks of Landour. The house and two acre estate are situated slightly above and to the east of St. Paul's Church and the old cantonment parade ground, which is now Char Dukan. Like many houses in Mussoorie, its name is taken from the writings of Sir Walter Scott, whose book-length poem describes heroic battles near the original Rokeby Castle in England. Methodist missionaries continued to operate the property as a guest house throughout the rest of the 20th century. Today, Rokeby has been carefully restored to its original glory. This heritage building is resplendent with character in its elaborate brick arches and niches, intricate stone walls, real wood floors and beams, and cosy fireplaces. Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, the traditions of bygone years – where colonial officers, renegade soldiers of fortune and pious miss saibs lived under one roof – can still be felt. An air of mystery beckons visitors.

Rokeby Manor has earned accolades for its idyllic location and charming atmosphere, reminiscent of a British cottage, which many guests find tranquil and scenic. While the hotel's service is frequently lauded for its warm hospitality and attentive staff, opinions on value for money diverge, with several travelers mentioning the pricing as steep relative to the room sizes and luxury offered. The amenities, including cozy rooms and delectable cuisine, receive high praise, as does the hotel's commitment to cleanliness. Yet, guests have mixed views regarding room upkeep and luxury.

We had a lovely short Christmas holiday for 3 nights and had wonderful experience at Rokeby Manor Landour. The lovely fireplace at the lodge area where you can spend some nice warm time reading. The suite we booked was nicely done it was made warm and cosy with nice split ac heaters and even washrooms had heatres. We were given hot bags and daily some nice chocolates towards the night. The food at Emily’s is too good with right amount of spices. Coming to staff very well mannered and active staff inspite of the peak seasons of Christmas and New Year. The manager pays extra attention. Best part was we could get the shopping bags or bakery delivered from Landour Bakery and Prakash stores. All the services were very prompt. Above all Landour is a calm beautiful place if you want to avoid the rushes of Mussorie. The Gardens of the Property is beautiful and the location is nearby all main attractions where you can do some nice walks.

We wanted to visit this place for a long time and it was worth the wait. Rokeby is at an excellent location in Landour away from the noise and overcrowded Mussorie. The staff here is very good and very passionate about the property, most of them have been since the opening of the place. The food is also very good and a lot of people come only to dine at their restaurants.
We were lucky to get upgraded for a night to their villa which has excellent views unlike most rooms in the hotel which don't have a view and not even an openable window.
My disappointment is the mainataince of the rooms. Its been more than 12/13 years since its open and most of the furniture and furnishings are worn out. I know the passionate Sanjay Narang who is always ahead of the game had the vision of Luxury boutique property but since 2020 a lot of homestays and boutique hotels have come up in India and have much better rooms as far as the looks and amenities go. They need to refurbish all the rooms. Also suggest please install tankless water heaters instead of a huge tank sitting over the pot which is very uncomfortable.
I Therefore felt the property is overpriced due to the rooms look and feel and amenities offered in it.
Hope to visit soon when it Happens :-)

Rokeby Manor is an absolutely beautiful grand old stone mansion, with historic highly-polished wood floors, tasteful decorations, and a professional staff that is eager to meet all of your needs. The breakfast spread is delicious and extensive, and one can also get eggs or waffles made to order. The views cannot be beat, and there are many wonderful walking paths nearby. The beds and rooms are extremely comfortable, and the entire place has reverse-osmosis filtered water so it is safe for westerners to drink. Some in our party stayed in the log cabin, which was a wonderful focal point for our group, with its private garden, kitchen, and dining room.

Be careful if you are booking this place, they are not trustworthy at all. The gentleman we spoke to for booking, Mr. Shahnawaz, promised us a selection of rooms but on arrival we were given easily the worst room in the hotel, no. 6 and more or less told to either like it or lump it. Since we had made the full payment in advance, we had no choice but to lump it.

The next morning we complained to his senior, Mr. Paramvir Singh and he seemed very apologetic. As a gesture he promised to keep the connecting room, no. 7, vacant so that we would not at least be disturbed by any noise coming from it. But that very evening we noticed that the room was occupied, again a commitment that was not met.

Mr. Ashu, the GM, met us the next day and he finally ensured that no. 7 was kept vacant and even gave us the key.

As for the room, there's a small connecting room (no. 7) on one side and a staff room or passage on the other. Behind theses two rooms, no. 6 and 7, there's a refrigerator or something and you are constantly subjected to the noise coming from it, day and night.

And, from 5 am to midnight, the door of the staff area is constantly opening and banging shut. The staff keep moving through, talking loudly and making noise with some equipment. It was very distrubing but, despite complaining to Mr. Ashu, the manager, they did not bother to lower their voices or attempt to make less noise. We finally had to resort to playing our music all the time, even at night, to drown out these noises.

We can't speak about the noise levels in the other rooms but, if you are given any of these rooms, as per us you are better off not staying here.

The hotel itself is very quaint but very small, not like it appears on Instagram. There's a reception, 12 rooms, a very nice and decent sized restaurant on the first floor with a sitout and a tiny tea garden. They have a party lawn up a steep path above the hotel where guests can sit and even partake of a jacuzzi on payment basis. But only if there's no function happening there. You have to book the jacuzzi a day in advance.

We used the jacuzzi and it was quite lovely, being in a hot tub in the open, watching the sunset, with screens around to ensure our privacy. The review got an extra star because of it!

On the plus side, the quality of the food was excellent and the service in the restaurant too was very good, no complaints there.

Overall though, the poor booking experience and noisy rooms spoiled our experience to a very large extent.

Rokeby Manor, Landour Beautiful Views, but Disappointing Value. Overhyped and overpriced.

We stayed at the Pine Tree Lodge, one of Rokeby Manor's villas. While the stunning views and warm service from the butler and in-house chef were definite highlights, the overall experience fell far short of expectations, particularly given the steep prices (about US$ 750 per night, accommodating four adults).

Pros:

The views from the villa are breathtaking, perfect for a relaxing getaway.

The staff are warm, efficient, and attentive. The in-house butler, Arjun, and the chef, Vikram, were very kind.
The beds were comfortable, and dining at Emily’s offered a cozy ambience with tasty food over breakfast.

Having an in-house chef was a nice touch, considering how far we were from the main building, Rokeby Manor. You need to give him about a couple of hours notice of what you want to eat from the menu.

Cons:

Accessibility is a major issue. The villa is accessed via rickety stone steps, making it unsuitable for elderly or disabled guests. If we had known, we would not have brought elderly parents, it made it very difficult for them.

The Pine Tree Lodge is located about 1km from the main Rokeby complex, which was not clearly noted on the website. Food had to be ordered from the main building, and it arrived cold (e.g., the high tea).

The Himalayan high tea is nothing to write home about, please skip. The baked items are not up to standard.
The bedrooms and bathrooms lack luxury—shower curtains instead of cabin, for example. And, a tin roof. Again, it would be fine for a regular Airbnb but not at the cost that Rokeby Manor charges for this villa.
In winter, inadequate heating. AC blowers fail to make the space warm and cozy in winter; oil heaters would be more appropriate. The bonfire is chargeable, and the fireplace in the villa was non-functional. So, bring your own extra woolens to also wear indoors.

Bottomline - the steep rates do not justify the experience; it’s certainly not value for money. We have stayed in many luxury hotels which are expensive but offer matching comfort and luxury.

This Rokeby Manor villa does not match up to any international standards. While the property certainly has its charm, the logistical challenges, lack of clarity, and underwhelming amenities make it a disappointing experience.

I stayed at rokeby for a month and it has been the best decision I made !
The property is exceptionally beautiful and so is landour.
However what makes rokeby stand apart from any other property is the staff here and the vibe they bring to the place .
Right from the manager and the staff working at rokeby ,everyone is dedicated to making your stay memorable and try their absolute best to understand your needs .
It was great to see smiling faces all around in the staff , a lot of positive vibes definitely. Special shoutout to the folks at the front desk who were always available for any questions, queries and needs.. Akshit, Alpana , Harshit.. and many more !
The food is fab , and words fall short of the kind of service Emily’s provides to their guests round the clock. Their garwhali menu is very creative and authentic. Shoutout to the entire team at emily’s. Thanks to the chef , Rahul, for catering to my needs of homestyle food from time to time and the ever friendly and accommodating staff..sajan , shubham, ravindra and aashish!
The housekeeping folks are lovely. When you are staying at a place for a month, you tend to notice the finer details as well. The housekeeping staff is relentless in their service of daily cleaning as well as lovely surprises of placing fresh flowers in the room and night chocolates! Special mention to vikram for being ever smiling while helping me out!
I also took a few sessions in rokebys spa and salon , and the service was great ! Pooja and Shakila both provided excellent treatments, along with fun conversations 😊.
Shout out to shubham as well for accompanying me on walks to the bakehouse every now and then.
Thanks to the team for ending my stay with a very cute farewell gesture ❤️

We've been to rockeby multiple time to eat at Emily's, but this was for the first time we stayed there. The experience was awesome. The best thing about rockeby was their service and staff. This place takes you back in time and makes you feel like Mr Wilson, owner of the place.
The rooms are small but adequate. There was shared open space accessible from our room, so we didn't exactly miss having a balcony. Their complementary breakfast menu is elaborate. Plus they put complementary chocolates everyday in our room. Over all, the experience was great, although the rooms are on the higher side. Since we were there during off season (although Landour was terribly crowded), they gave us a good discount of 1 free night.

it was love at first sight. The location was perfect , both for the views and also surroundings.
Everything about the place - the porch entry , lounge area , the little tea gardens in back yard and the quaint cozy rooms .

Not to forget Emily’s the dining area which transports you to the past era when it was built .

There are abundant books and magazines to read in the Wilson room (a part of the Emily's cafe) and the lounge area too.

We travelled during Christmas season so there were decorations in place with a beautiful Christmas tree at the reception.

The rooms are small but adequately cozy for 2 people (can manage an extra bed in some rooms) .
Special mention to the staff who try and attend to the smallest requirement.
Mr Sajid at the reception was very helpful especially during check in.
A special mention to another young staff , sorry cannot recollect his name (who was at front desk on 21st December evening) who arranged for someone to bring medicines when one of us was unwell. The chef was kind to prepare a special meal as requested for the sick person.

There are heaters provided in the bathrooms, for those cold days. which is really well thought of as the rooms unlike hotels (where you have a central heater or AC ) have individual room heaters or AC.

Their Hi tea experience is worth trying, but you need to book it in advance as all the bakery items are freshly made (at their own Bakehouse) on demand.

The sunset view from the garden are one of the best one can imagine with the winterline view.

We shall surely come back again to experience the hospitality.
