I was a bit apprehensive off staying here after some of the negative revues, but did it for the position on the Ganges. We did not experience anything negative though. The staff were super friendly and helpful, breakfast good, rooms clean (although not luxury, but more than adequate), lovely hot water. The manager was very helpful in arranging transport from the station and a quick lunch when we arrived since we spent the night on the train. Our rooms were ready for check-in long before actuall check-in time. Choose a room with a balcony, the view over the Ganges is worth the extra money spent. It is very close to the burning ghat, so it can be noisy at night if you are a light sleeper

This place, and Varanasi are a trip! You better organize one of their driver's to pick you up from the airport or train station because there is no way you are gonna find it on your own! Luckily we did and the driver took us as close as he could and then the porter carried our bags as we navigated through the narrow labyrinth of alleyways to the hotel. It is about a 40 minute drive from the airport and at least a 20 minute walk from there. The staff welcomed us warmly and quickly got is accommodated. Try to request a room with a view - which is spectacular - though you might be sharing it with monkeys! You'll need to like stairs as well - but you already know that because the city has so many. The rooms are simple and clean. No room service so if it doesn't remain clean…

The Pros: Good location in the old town of Varanasi, provided you dont mind navigating the warren of lanes to find your way back. Friendly staff. Great View from the rooms and roof. Fridge in the room. The Cons: Slightly overpriced for the room quality (we stayed during Diwali). Marginally Clean bedding, average for India. Grubby bathrooms, not terrible, just not great. No food/restaurant available. I like staying on the Ganges in the Old town, and during Diwali when the pressure was on rooms I'd stay again. Ideally I'd book something a little cleaner with a reasonable restaurant if I could though.

Namaste! The Scindhia Guest House is a well run, impeccably clean, hospitable guest house. It is off the beaten track and entry may be problematical for some. The guest house is now (2013) going through some mandated structural changes. Management and staff are always ready to assist in any way possible - from arranging morning/evening river cruises to coordinating pick-up service from train station and airport. I have been honored to stay at the guest house annually form several years. I highly recommend enjoying Varanasi by lodging at the the Scindhia Guest House. Thank you

The Air Conditioned Rooms are spacious with a balcony. The food in the terrace restaurant was really god. They made Khichdi on request. Not much to do inside the hotel, closes the gate by 11 pm. But you get your money's worth (Rs 700 for a non A/C room and 1300 for an AC Room )just by the spectacular view of the Ganges and the Manikarnika Ghat. I think of the night,it brought such a deep stillness in me and the sight of me watching dead bodies burning continuously from the balcony still gives me goose bumps. Its a fantastic place, especially if you want to witness the burning of the bodies without having to shed tears cause of the fire.

In 40 years of travel on five continents, this is the single worst hotel experience I've ever had. Where do I start... A friend and I had booked "super deluxe" top floor rooms for five nights. You reach the hotel entrance by climbing up a steep, garbage-choked alleyway from the ghat. As my friend got to the door, she was attacked by two monkeys. We then went up a narrow, dark staircase to our rooms, which I'd describe as plain and functional, anything but deluxe, let alone "super deluxe," and ludicrously overpriced. (Although the view of the Ganges from the balcony is admittedly spectacular.) Breakfast was supposedly included according to the hotel's website, but there was no breakfast. In fact there appeared to be no restaurant. When we returned later in the day, a gang of…

I did the reservation through Agoda.com and sent an email asking a transfer from the airport. Nobody answered till I contacted Agoda and then get an answer. Even they confirmed, Acttually, no one came at the AirPort to Pick me up and after 1 hour (I needed to call them!) the driver arrived. The room with view balcony is great, but don't expect a Very confortable one. It's just razonable. The location is great for those who wants to see the burning Ghat (5 minutes walking). And, don't, don't smell (some people can think because the burning Ghat). Comparing with other options, I think it is a Nice one.

* Free shelves of books to read * Very nice staff * Can pay extra for a balcony * Breakfast very expensive (instead go to Jai Shive in Sunrise Lodge, a 5 min walk) * Closes their door at 11pm so beware of this when arriving! They might be closed if you arrive late * All stairs are very steep * Use the fan on low to stop mosquitos from biting at night * Don't book anything through them. All prices for anything, like a taxi, boat, rickshaw are exactly double what you would normally pay * Relatively quiet for Varanasi. It's possible to get a good night's sleep here Arriving: Ring or email your arrival details to them and ask if they can arrange for a pickup from train or bus station. However for us we had to get a prepaid rickshaw to Chowk Street (I think they were busy?) then…

Small room, without any commodity and not cleaned for an expensive price. No value for money. Hot water for only short shower, the power goes away frequently, monkeys discourage to stay on the balcony. Don't stay here !!

I recently and excitedly visited Varanasi - a place I've wanted to go for a long time. Upon arriving - the excitement continued, until we spent a few minutes in our guest house. I understand the power goes out in Varanasi quite frequently. And maybe this was just a whacky coincidence. But everyday around the same time - the time the hotel closed, the power would be cut. And every morning when the owner arrived, the power would go on. Even if this is just how Varanasi worked - the outrageous part of this was that the hotel had a generator - which powered a single light in the room and the fan. No outlets. So there was no way to charge electronic devices. Like a camera. Which I assume most people use when on vacation? But what was even more infuriating was that the…
