Even if on first sight the area looks destroyed (governement tries to expulse people to build expensive hostels) it have a lots of shrines uncovered and a pleasant atmosphere. People in the streets are friendly, the family at the guest house was welcoming and helpful. Confortable mattress, fan for the heat, proper bathroom and cheap prices. I'd recommend this one. As one previous comment might say otherwise, the zone is on the contrary not dangerous at all. Would stay again

this family is amazing, very friendly, they are carefull persons ! the room was clean, the mattress really confortable, with a good fan . on the first sigh, the area seems little bit strange because many family houses in this quarter were destroyed by the governement to create big touristic hostels ! but the location is very good, in the old city just near to the gate rest to tree baba hostel is also a good mean to help family to keep her house ! if you go to this guest house, you should not be disappointed !

Very nice family but that hotel is in the middle of the ruins they are knocking down that area so half of that hotel doesn't exist any more dust noise and dangerous. That hotel should be closed down.I don't understand why that family is still there but if they want to risk thats ok but they should be more responsible about us tourists

I spent 4 nights at Tree Baba Hostel and enjoyed my stay. It was comfortable, clean and in a great location close to all the ghats and laneways. The family are extremely friendly and helpful, they make you feel very safe and welcome. I would recommend doing the walking tour with Suraj he has alot of knowledge on Varanasi and will take you to hidden special places. Thank you for everything Suraj and family at Tree Baba hostel

A homely place, very comfortable bed and nice areas to relax inside and out. Great view from the rooftop. This family is so lovely. They went out of their way to ensure that I had everything I needed such as extra blankets, filtered water. They always made sure that I was safe and were so kind to shuffle bookings so I could extend my room when my plans changed and I fell sick. I booked 2 nights and stayed 2 weeks! This is also really close to Manikarnika Ghat and a short walk to various restaurants and any shops you may need. Or you can take a boat ride along the river from around there . And if you happen to have any spare change for some curd or biscuits, there is a very sweet lone little brown puppy with no Mum that hangs about round the back ;)

We enjoyed very much our stay in tree baba hostel. Great views from the rooftop. Only 5 minutes from crematory and just next to the river gangas. You will feel the essence of varanasi and discover a bit more the magic of india.

It was a really bad experience, and it didn't help us to enjoy the city itself. Varanasi is a very interesting but intense city and when you go to the guest house you expect to have at least some minimal confort and nice people. But we found a dirty room and guest house facilities, with a really bad smell. The beds were really dirty and it wasn't easy to rest or sleep there. Rooftop have a nice view but it is an unpleasant place to be, with no place to seat, dirty and with no lights at all. More than once, the owner was a bit drunk and tried to justify the bad service and lack of cleaning with the Government pressure to destroy the old city buildings. He was always bargaining for good reviews to he could have more guests. He never asked us about our stay and asked for the money before check out. In our opinion, it's not a good way to be in the business and the service and facilities were really bad so we can't recomend it to anyone.
