We just had a trip to Madurai and stayed in what is possibly the worst guesthouse in the country - the Hotel West Tower. The guidebook recommended it as being clean, friendly and close to the temple - about as inaccurate as possible.

I've travelled on a tight budget in India on and off over 15 years, paying between 30 to 1000 rupees for a room, so know not to expect much for 600 rupees, but this place was especially bad.

The staff were rude and abrupt, one of them leering at my (well covered) girlfriend and demanding 'tips' every time we saw him despite him doing nothing for us. When we checked out and declined their over-expensive tuktuk offer they insulted us and jeered.

The room was small at 3mx2m and floor filthy - a crust of dirt and hair on the soles of our feet after a few minutes walking in the room. The sheets and pillow were well used and unwashed since the previous guest(s). The bathroom was also filthy and reeked of [--]

To top it all, I was eaten alive by fleas during the night and itched badly for a week after.

There are 2 dozen guesthouses closer to the temple than this - around the pedestrian square that surrounds the temple. Also - the many hotels along and around Town Hall Rd are only 5 mins walk from the temple. The Madurai Residency looked particularly good at about 800 rupees. Avoid the West Tower like the plague.

To put it short: There are a couple of hotels to avoid in India and the West Tower Madurai is definitely the leader of the pack. Being rated by LP as between budget and mid-range, I wonder wether the LP guys were completely drunk when they visited.
While the staff were ok (but not more), the rooms were not. Entering from the outside heat and deafening noise of mid-day Madurai, we found this to be the only hotel around with rooms available. Intending to stay only a night for temple visiting and having checked the room only cursory, we found the going rate fair enough and we took the room. We should have been more vigilant, but we decided that we'd better spend the day at the temple than shopping around for the perfect hotel.

The bathroom was strongly on the grotty side and every candle would have provided more light than the bulb that was installed there.

The bed sheets had to be changed first, before we were able to make use of them and I do not not how many people had already been dying on the matresses - at least they looked like that. One had the immediate desire to desinfect the whole stuff.

The windows facing the main street did not close properly which resulted in an indoor noise-level comparable only to a slum hut near an airport runway.

The "ac" was de facto a cooler serving only one purpose: adding more noise to the already existing cacophony of sounds - right beside the bed where my head was due to lie. The fan however worked and brought a minimum of relief.

To complete the list of nuissances and short-comings, I suspect the hotel owner of having a contract with some other hotels, in order to take all mosquitos present in Madurai to be placed in the West Tower. I swear by God I have been to a number of Anopheles infested places of India, but in this place - believe it or not - I had to catch and kill 30 (thirty!!!) mosquitos, before even thinking of a rest.

If one would be forced to make a positive statement, I'd say that the proximity to the temple is unbeatable, but the price for this is a tremendous noise-level, well into the night.

So, my fazit would be: Before setting off to Madurai, reserve a room in a hotel that has a website - with images. No matter what you do once you are in Madurai, but if you come near the West Tower, start running away immediately, and as fast as you can or you'll regret it.

The People there are more or less friendly and the location is very good. But that`s it if you would like to say any good about this hotel.
The price is more mid range than budged while the rooms are the contrary.
Its quite dity. The sheets of the beds need a good wash and the bathrooms need to get renovated. There are a LOT of Cockroaches, specially in the bath but also in the room.
Furthermore they have no generator, so you die when the fan and the lights went out in this stuffy room on a bad and dirty mattress.
By the way was it necessary to call somebody to change the lamp in the bathroom and the other only bright lamp exploded and couldn't be repaired.

So its a quite crappy hotel which with a price which by far is not proper.

Nothing special at all by backpacker standards. Decent price. Excellent location - so close to the temple and near some cheap eateries. They offer tours and drop offs to Kodaikanal at reasonable prices.

It's right next to the temple, but on a VERY noisy side street. Rooms are fair. My fan didn't work, but the staff fixed it. Staff was nice enough, but not super friendly like in other guesthouses in India. There are a bunch of other guesthouses in the area that are probably worth checking out first.

We stayed in a double room for two nights. The room was clean, but we had no bed sheets to sleep under, no towels and no toilet paper. Not sure if it wasn't included in the room or if they had forgotten to fix it. The staff wasnt that service minded either. We paid 800 rupees which for this hotel seems a bit overpriced.

We stayed at this hotel for one night, because it was the first budget place we found after arriving late in Madurai. It is not worth what it charges, since the only good thing about it is the location near the temple, train station and bus station. Other than that, the bed sheets and the walls were dirty, the tiny bathroom looked as if it was not cleaned regularly, and the windows let a lot of noise and cold in. We slept really bad on very thin and hard mattresses with blankets that were too short for average-sized Europeans, and checked out as soon as we found something else.
There are cheaper accomodations nearby that offer far better rooms and services.

Very good location but that's it. Budget place for one night but it can be very noisy. Rooms are small and not that clean. Sleep here and go to the upmarket hotels a little further to enjoy great views of the temple at the rooftop restaurants.

Despite it was recommended as a budget option in my travel book, we had to bargain a lot for the price. Definitely not worth what they ask for! Sheets were extremely dirty (not sure if they even changed them), we had to ask for another set. Bathroom had a weird strong smell, had to keep the door closed at all times.
Good location (very close to the temple's west gate), but busy street made it almost impossible to sleep at night. Don't be lazy and walk on the same street, there are many more comfortable options at a similar price!
