The rudeness of the shift manager is quite over the top and downright unbelievable. He showed me three rooms. I indicated the smaller room is fine and he then asked for passport and to make payment. Within 10 minutes, he then said the smaller room was no longer available. It was now for females only. No issue, there was a third room with AC, but at this point, the way he handled the situation, raising his voice, utter impoliteness and lack of courtesy, I was quite happy to leave and never return. From the rather schizophrenic reviews below, either super positive or super negative, I'd say there's a problem here. Take your chances at will. Hope you have better luck than I.
The location of The Lost Hostel isn't great. It can be found down a poorly-lit road which often has lots of people hanging around it, even late at night. It is a tuktuk ride from most tourist spots too. The welcome though was nice and check-in process was easy. We had a six-bed dorm with air con. The room also had a number of fans so it was easy to cool the temperature. There were a number of mosquitos in the room (and in the hostel generally) which is a problem for me as I get bitten a lot. Did manage to kill quite a few, but the management should look at this problem. It doesnt help that nobody shuts the dorm doors! I had to keep closing our door to prevent more mosquitos. The communal area with hammock is nice and although we didnt use it, the kitchen looked well-equipted. There was no hot water available in our bathroom. I felt like the whole place could do with a good clean and some maintainence. Bed linen was fresh though. A nice, comfortable stay but room for improvement.…
One of the worst experiences I've had in India, & I'll never return to this chain. I hope the owner based in Bangalore is reading this very carefully & takes note that my colleague witnessed every moment of this experience from start to finish. The owner will find it extremely difficult to argue defensively. I do not recommend any foreigner visit this hostel & if they do, to do so at their own caution & in consideration of what happened to I. I specifically booked a room as advertised with AC. Before payment I asked to see the room. I was then told by the manager on duty that there was no AC available. I rightfully complained about this misleading advertising, especially after 5hrs+ of travel, including very hot weather in Madurai. To top it all off, there was no running water in the room. The manager offered no recompense, i.e. a better rate to stay & expected full payment for something I was not getting. I spoke to the owner who used the same excuse as his manager saying that the advertising was the fault of Booking.com & that they didn't remove the 'air-conditioning' from the listing. This is absurd, to think that the owner/manager have no access to remove this themselves from the booking platform. I find their excuse VERY hard to believe. The owner spoke like a broken down record exclaiming that there were 'non AC' rooms available at the full price & that there was no reduction available, continuing to fault Booking.com & taking NO personal RESPONSIBILITY for his business failings. Furthermore, what deteriorated the situation was the owner beginning to push me away from his business instead of apologising & negotiating a better price. I exclaimed that I spoke none of the local language, first time in India & Madurai & had nowhere else to go, so it was a necessity that I did stay at least one night despite this situation. The owner accepted that I would be contacting the booking company in due course to report this issue & proceed further & I expressed my full dissatisfaction of what was happening. The complete & utter lack of responsibility & lack of contrition from the owner only served to bring the situation to the point that he called back his manager after I terminated our call in frustration & his manager requested that my colleague & I leave the premises in 10 minutes. Extremely, bitterly disappointing by this experience as I've stayed comfortably with The Lost Hostel various times in India. Never again.…
We stayed for 2 nights, the hostel was clean and the staff were lovely. We felt safe here and able to relax after busy days of walking around a chaotic city, the roof top was a nice place to hand out too
The hostel is very nice and well located. Its clean and has nice facilities, the rooms are big, bed sheets are clean, the bathroom is big and spacious, the kitchen is very well equipped, met some very near people. Although there were some things that could be better, there were a lot of mosquitos in the room and they bite all night long, the shower pressure is not good and there should be a room with AC given how hot Madurai gets in summer.
