Two hours from Coimbatore, in the heart of upper Coonoor, lies Wallwood Garden. Earlier known as Blair Atholl – it was built over a hundred years ago by a Scottish Major General, hailing from the village Blair Athol in Scotland. The Duke of Atholl still lives in Scotland in his own castle. Wallwood was later sold to a British couple after the First World War, who ran it as a boarding house for many years. It was purchased by Liptons before the Second World War and the house has remained in the hands of tea companies – currently with Matheson Bosanquet. The Mansion has retained the atmosphere of the past when tea estates had their own lifestyle ! It has its own prize-winning garden of the Nilgiris overlooking a unique pomological garden. It is located two minutes from Sim’s Park, one of India’s most luxuriant Botanical Gardens, laid out in 1874 with over 1200 species of plants and many old rare trees like the Rudraksh, Paperwood, Elephant Leg, Strawberry Tree etc. Savour the wildlife sanctuaries of Ooty, Pykara, Kotagiri & Bandipur, driving through the lush tea plantations of the Nilgiris.
We stayed two nights here at the tail end of the Monsoon season. Our accomodation was not in the main house, but to some rooms off to the side. They were really damp, despite staff having heaters going prior to our arrival. There was mould on the ceiling. The menu was fairly extensive, but in my opinion needs to be much smaller and done better. Food was average. To their credit the staff were super friendly and accomodating. The property is a little tired partly due I think to the Covid crisis, India like most places is still recovering.

Provided you enjoy reliving the Raj this is a great place. My room led straight out on a delightful garden with views from there of the nearby forest and tea plantations. Built in the 1830s by a Britisher this place is in reasonable condition. The manager was very helpful in arranging how to see local sights. Food was excellent even if, as the only guest, I was constantly scrutinised by the wait staff.

It was good but rooms are very small. One room Acacia was big.but other rooms were very small. The feel of the place was ancient. They don't provide TV too in the rooms. It's 3 kms from bus stand. In breakfast, they did not serve North Indian stuff which is very bad. Only poha was there and all south indian stuff. It was all south indian. the hotel was very nice and beautiful. Acacia room opened in a balcony which was very nice and awesome 👏👏. The staffs were good too. It was raining so the feel was very good.

We would rate 1/5. The score of one is because we came back alive. We as a family of 5 including a teenager and 2 old aged women stayed in Neemrana WallWood Garden, Coonoor for 4 nights in July'23. Shockingly, we came across the following events at the property, which scared us beyond words, that we would not even think recommending even to our enemies. 1. Especially one of the rooms ``Eucalyptus” definitely has something to it where it deprives you of sleep and peace and oozes with a lot of negativities surrounding it. This was agonisingly felt by our family members. Indeed, the stay was too stressful to say the least. In fact, we tried switching rooms within ourselves but we all felt the same. When told, the manager Ms.Geetha to our surprise, was not taken aback at all, saying none so far has ever complained anything of that sort. We had to opt for another room to get sleep, peace and to relax 2. To top this, they have bunch of “hyper-noisy” staff who make it a point to deprive the guests of any sleep, who keep constantly talking and fighting, be it day or night. They were at their loudest at night even till 23.15 on some days. The facility is designed in such a way that all of us in all the 3 rooms could hear them fighting and talking. This undermines the very conduct of the staff and lack of adequate training by the management. These everyday disturbances gave us so much stress due to lack of sleep, spoilt each day. In fact, the disturbances were so much that despite paying up for 3 rooms, we ended up all 5 staying in one room. 3. The dining area is swamped by flies all the time. It is so unhygienic and has the potential to cause serious health issues. They have a fly-bat and we had to hire it to save ourselves from flies as there were no dedicated staff to allow guests to have their food. This forces us to have our lunches and dinners, outside. The food was very very average and absolutely no relation to the kind of rate charged. Of course, as cited above, we had only breakfast on all days and were forced to dine outside for the unhygienic atmosphere, quality and exorbitant charge for the food. 4. When we were settling our bills, we came across an item billed which we did not have. Later when enquired, it was found out that they had billed more and clubbed that with another item of higher rate considering it as the same item carrying the same rate. for an item. The difference is Rs.30/- but then the question is their intent to cheat the guests. This only tells us they do not have any mechanism of checks and balances or the manager blindly approves bills given to her to be raised with the guests. After all, this hotel is touted as an unique place of stay as the selling point being it is as old heritage property. We burnt so much money to experience one of its kind but all that we experienced had a hell of a time, literally. The manager was very inconsiderate and shameful not being able to offer even the basic services. I do not think the hefty amount we shelled out was justified, as they were not able to service the guest and to have made our vacation a forgettable one, for all the wrong reasons listed above and it is unforgivable We do not have evidence to prove any of our findings but honestly true in every sense. We as a family never intend to spoil anybody's earnings or business. We decided to put up this in the interest of travel folks. …

The best part about the property is the staff. Bala, Robin and Vettri are great guys and really make your stay comfortable. But do keep two things in mind while staying here. One, the heritage part means that while it is colonial and lovely, certain features are old. Like the geyser in one of our rooms didnt work despite the best efforts of the staff. The bathroom opened to a big step which made me wary about my older parents tripping at night. But it is super clean and homey

Dear Guest, Thank you for your valuable feedback about your recent getaway to the Wallwood Garden heritage hotel in Coonoor. We are glad to receive your kind appreciation about the services and the hospitality offered by the team members at the hotel. The Wallwood Garden is a 19th century Scottish-style, stately home that has been revitalised by Neemrana and is run as one of the most popular heritage hotels in Coonoor. The property offers views of the garden & the valley. However, as per your feedback, we would like to inform that we believe that our discerning travelers leave home to taste the 'difference' and seek authenticity rather than the faked luxury. Also, we have noted your observation regarding the geyser and checked with the hotel manager. Due to some issue, it was not working. Please be assured that the same will get repaired/changed on a priority basis. We thank you for your visit and look forward to welcoming you at any of our 18 heritage properties across India ! Warm Regards, Team Neemrana feedback@neemranahotels.com

We returned to visit after thirteen years; time seems to have stood still as we found everything just as enchanting. Quaint but comfortable, well looked after and beautiful garden blending with the wilder nature all around meant a glorious stay. Chef Dhanaseelam and his team rustle up really tasty and healthy dishes. The menu covers a wide range, thankfully not the run of the mill dishes one gets in the average restaurant. Absolutely scrumptious. Geetha and Bala are also very helpful and take great care, even special food request of my wife who was fasting one day. Highly recommended.

The property is old. There is huge room for improvement. First of all we booked the cherry blossom room and it was not upto our expectations at all. The room smelt very bad like it'd never been opened or ventilated. The lady at the reception was kind enough to shift us to a different room but that too was damp and the washroom doors were rotting and broken due to the dampness. The rug on the floor was also damp near washroom. Coming to food service, there's only 2 guys managing everything so we had to wait a long time to get our dinner even though we had ordered an hour ago. My suggestions would be hire more staff and please renovate all the rooms to fix the terrible dampness. I get that it's an old property but it needs fixing. It's not worth the travel from Ooty to stay here.…

Had a get-together trip to Coonoor with a group of 10 friends. Had booked 5 rooms which were all well-maintained and cheerful with brightly coloured walls. The place has preserved the colonial charm with lots of antique furniture like the massive poster beds, carved wooden chairs etc. The location is very convenient too. Not secluded and we felt very safe. Walkable to sims park, shopping area. We even took a small walk one morning to a tea estate closeby. The food and service was good. Thanks to the hospitality team including Bala, Robin, Vetrivel led by Madam Geetha. The cooks Dinesh and Mullai had prepared some authentic south indian fare for breakfast and dinner. The onion vadai, pumpkin curry and mor kuzhambu were especially good. Our only grouse was that the booking team could have given all our rooms inside the main bungalow building instead of being a bit spread out.…
