This elegant hotel forms part of the huge City Palace complex high above the lake, the remainder of which houses a palace museum and accommodation for royalty. Although the non-lakeside rooms are very good, if you are able to it is well worth paying R10,000 & tax per night extra for a lake view room because the lake view is simply stunning. The famous lake hotel appears to float in the water before your eyes from your balcony, Udaipur unfolds beneath your balcony, stunning views to the mountains and simply beautiful sunsets.

Staff are universally helpful and obliging, even golf buggies are available to take you to the security gates, where hordes of auto rickshaw drivers await you, though frankly it is much more fun to walk the streets within a half mile or so radius of the gate.

Altogether a memorable stay.

Footnote - we were informed that the palace museum and boat trips can get incredibly busy later in the year with crowds, congestion in the narrow passages and stairs, plus long waits for the next boat: we visited in January when it was quiet so avoided this.

Shiv Niwaz is an absolutely breathtaking hotel offering a traditional flair with all modern amenities. When we first booked this hotel we were unsure as to what to expect and we were blown away by its beauty and charm.

From the time of check-in, the lobby smelled so wonderful and we were greeted with juice, nuts and fruit to take the edge off our hunger. We then checked into our room which was nicely appointed. We decided to walk down to the pool area for some cocktails and enjoy the evening. That is when we met Ishan Lamba and Sobu Dhakshya and immediately became friends. There was an immediate kinship with each of them, especially with Ishan who greeted us every day to ensure everything was to our liking. Also hands up for Saarthak Sharma an excellent chef who spoiled us with the most delicious Indian cuisine.

Having travelled the world and stayed in some lovely hotels, I can attest that the features and ambiance is important in a hotel but what makes all the difference is the staff who welcomes the guests and makes them feel warm and invited which is truly an art. The staff could not do enough for us and for every ask we were met with a smile – that is excellent customer service.

I must commend the staff for going above and beyond our expectations, it truly made our experience a memorable one. I wouldn’t hesitate to book this hotel, you will not be disappointed. After a long day travelling and seeing all that Udaipur has to offer – this is the perfect sanctuary to come back to.

We stayed at Shiv Niwas Palace two years ago and, this time, we did not hesitate to book again at this hotel.
During these two years, the hotel has greatly improved certain areas (reception, Restaurant, lounge) and it is now even better (and they promised they will continue improving).
It is very expensive for India and even for western standards (staying, at least, at a Terrace Suite, that is really mandatory), However, it is a wonderful experience to enjoy this very special city. You are staying inside the Udaipur Palace and you receive a special pass to move around the area, that closes after the museum closing times.
The price should be lower, based on the old fashion of room settings, but still worth the effort for one or two nights.

My family stayed at Shiv Niwas on the last night of our 9 day trip in northern India, ending our trip on a high note with the impeccable service at the hotel. We were exhausted after days of traveling and the staff were great at anticipating our needs and smartly offering service as needed. We were upgraded to a nicer suite, which was spacious and provided a nice view of Lake Pichola.
The hotel is located in the same complex as the city palace. To save us from walking, they offer golf cart rides to the palace main gate and the trip goes through a couple of gates manned by guards, making us feel like royalty who are leaving our palace :) And speaking of royalty, the Prince of Udaipur was also staying at the palace (in a private part of the complex) at the time! The only complaint from my wife was that we should have stayed for one more night at the hotel.

We stayed here for one night and loved it. We had a beautiful room/suite overlooking the lake with a terrace with two lounges and a balcony with two chairs and a table. The property is part of the City Palace complex and is stunning. Probably the most beautiful pool of any location we stayed in and lovely common areas. The breakfast was not only incredibly delicious, but served in a beautiful room with a huge buffet. Everyone was lovely and helpful, and I can't recommend this hotel highly enough. When we had trouble with our phone and wifi a procession of 4 employees came to help immediately. Problems were fixed within 15 minutes of my complaint.

One of my best vacations was in and Shiv Niwas Palace made it even more special ! This hotel is situated within the City Palace complex so there is no second thoughts on the location. We had a terrace suite room which had a great view of the Picchola lake from the private balcony. Food was truly amazing and the staff at the restaurant were extremely friendly and catered to all our needs. A visit to Udaipur is incomplete without a stay in this beautiful heritage property !

We stayed for 2 nights in Shiv Niwas Udaipur and I must say the location of the property is absolutely fantastic with access to city palace and lake side views. We thoroughly enjoyed the lakeside walks in early morning and late evenings. However, the staff here lacks warmth and hospitality and food was ok. This is a beautiful property with royal feeling but avoid staying in palace rooms as they are in no match with the rest of premises. This is a beautiful property and the place can offer so much if they put some focus on hospitality and revive their food choices.

Our family of 4 stayed for 3 nights at Shiv Niwas Palace and the visit ws beyond excellence. The location is beautiful and our room had all the amenities and classic views of the lake Pichola and another area with 2 personalised sun chairs. Being here ws a special advantage for my senior citizen father as there were prompt complementary golf carts available for all the main tourist attractions like city palace , the sound and light show and the boat trip. So we never did walk to and from these places. The food was well made and served with lots of care and personalised attention. The buffet spread was awesome and the service excellent. Right from booking to the reception, staff, rooms, food, golf carts, beauty and ease of the place , everything was superlative. A special thanks to Vikrant from the reception and also to all the servers at breakfast and dinner who showed lots of care and concern for us. I don’t remember all the names but each one was superlative. You are actually staying in a real palace. Excellent location , service and amenities. Would love to come again . Highly recommended.

Starting from the booking till the time we checked out, everything was smooth and comfortable. Let’s start at the very beginning; They booked a cab for my airport pick up, I used the same cab for the entire trip as I was overly satisfied. The room was large, clean and comfortable, so was the bathroom. The service at the hotel be it the room service or at the restaurant or the front desk, all were very hospitable and down to earth. Breakfast spread was good. The location of the hotel is the best possible as it is inside the City palace itself, but the usp still lies in the fact that for in-house guests they provide golf cars to travel from one end of the palace to the other at all time (highly recommended especially for elderly).

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The staff were unfailingly helpful and efficient. The public rooms, bar, and restaurant were superbly furnished and exuded an air of uncompromising luxury. Our bedroom was adequate but nothing special, and we found the old fashioned padlock on the door quaint but annoying to open and close. I guess our room was a standard room as it had no outlook. The other downside was that the bar, pool and restaurant were some distance away, which wasn’t too much of a problem, except that on two occasions it poured with rain and we got rather damp. Although when we were caught in an unseasonal downpour whilst in the restaurant the staff found a couple of umbrellas and insisted on escorting us back to our room.
The food was excellent, although we’re are aficionados of Indian food, we did not recognise most of the dishes on the menu, the waiters were extremely helpful in explaining the various dishes. Rajistani food tends to be very spicy with liberal dosings of chilli, the chef would always accommodate any requests to go lightly on aforementioned hot spices. The breakfasts were also historic, especially the local choices. The bar was sumptuous and relaxed, we sat in the window alcove and enjoyed the view over the lake, whilst enjoying a reasonably priced cocktail.
We would love to stay here again, but would probably go for a better standard of room.
