Hotel Surya is a beautiful but old hotel situated between Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar. Best part of this hotel is its location. Its situated near valley. Almost all rooms are valley facing. If you are going to visit Mahabaleshwar in Manson season, you must stay here. You will get beautiful view of valley. I bet you will prefer to seat in the balcony and enjoy the view of green valley instead of going to market and visit various spots. Rooms and toilets are also clean. The staff of hotel is very supportive. Food quality of this hotel is also good (But I will suggest to eat at dreamland hotel or Mapro. They serve fantastic food).

I had been to The Surya Resort with two of my friends and the property absolutely stood up to our expectations! Being a dedicated nature lover i totally loved the stupendous view from our room..
Although a small part of the property is under renovation, the construction work never disturbed our stay..The food, the neat-clean rooms, the room service, the location and the ambiance totally made us happy.
Special appreciation to Mr. Santosh- the front desk manager, who helped us throughout our stay with his courteousness.
I shall come again :)

We stayed in called Surya Retreat, which is located between Mahabaleshwar & Panchgani & is probably one of the most well known Hotels in that area with a 4-5 star rating.
On arriving at the Hotel we were informed that the Hotel was under renovation hence the Swimming Pool & Health Club & some rooms where being re-done hence were non functional, hence were being offered a discounted rate of Rs. 3500 per night, which in itself is pretty high, however looking at the hotel reputation we decided to go ahead with the deal.
When we entered the room we checked with the housekeeping staff if the A/C was working properly, he promptly put on the A/C and informed us that it was in order. We then went out for shopping & on returning in the evening we realized after sometime that the A/C was not working, only the blower was on. When we complained we were informed that someone would be at the room to check the same, however no one came. Since the balcony window was open it was quite cool hence we forgot about it & closed the balcony door & went to sleep. Within a few hours it started becoming warm & we got up due to the discomfort, we called the reception at about 2:30 a.m. & were informed that they would be sending someone to rectify the issue. When no one came for half an hour we tried calling again however there was no reply, so I had to walk till the reception in the middle of my sleep & in the middle of the night, where I found everyone was asleep. On waking them up one hotel staff called another & was informed that the A/C plant was not working, hence the issue cannot be resolved. On asking him why the same was not informed to us during checkin at the hotel, I was informed that only the Manager in the morning could help me out.
We obviously checked out the next day & went to the Front Desk, where the front office person apologized for the same. On informing him that we had a totally sleepless night due to the non working A/C & that we would not have checked in if we were informed about it earlier & that the room rate should be considerably reduced if not totally waived due to the discomfort caused to us by the Hotel, he promptly accepted his mistake & waived off Rs. 500 which we had to pay for our previous nights dinner. However on informing that it was not enough, he informed us that we needed to speak to their Front Office Manager & connected us to Mr. Santosh Kamble, who turned out to be one of the most rude persons we had come across. He not only refused to accept the Hotels mistake & give us any discount, he infact blamed us that in a centrally A/C hotel, we did not check if the A/C was working & that it was all our fault for not asking them during check-in. We were astonished with this reply. I don’t know anyone who checks if the A/C is working or not in a central A/C Hotel of this category [ though we had casually checked with the housekeeping staff ]. On informing him that we will lodge a complaint against them, he was so arrogant & rude, he informed us “ karo jo karna hai, main bhi tumko dekh lega “ – total arrogance as the local authorities there are all in connivance with these local Hotels who openly cheat customers visiting & on being pointed out their mistake, they just brush it off with their Dadagiri.

Such hotels should not be allowed to function at all by the authorities. We are already in the process of lodging complains to the concerned departments/ authorities.

The Surya resort has been a dream vacation for me. The resort is huge and lots of playing space for Children and young n old to get their dose of fresh air. The rooms have a view of a massive green cover and it gets beautiful in the evenings with birds chirping in the air. Great pool and I may state that its regularly cleaned up. The restaurant is good however a bit more variety can help, Staff is very friendly and helpful. It doesn't have a view of a valley..but trust me you will enjoy your stay here and feel at peace.

I want to detail out my experience at Surya to give all potential visitors a good idea of what they will venture into. I have been following TA for a long time but this is probably the first time wherein TA reviews didnt turn out right.

To begin with, i made a reservation for an off season weekend via its Andheri office (concept hospitality) as reservatios arent done by the hotel in Mahabaleshwar (as told by the andheri sales person - Kalpesh). He gave me a package of 8500 for a couple for 2 nights. When i said that its an off season and i should be given some additional deal, he mentioned that he will try to upgrade me but he never really even tried. I asked him if i could get only a lodging package to which he said that Surya doesnt offer that kind of package and its always meals incl. I trusted Mr Kalpesh and made my booking.

When i reached the hotel, the check in was fine and there was so special room allocated to us but the manager just picked a suitable key and handed to us. As promised, each room has a balcony and its got a very beautiful view of the valley to it. No denying this fact. The room size is decent as well. The service is good and quite quick.

so, whats the problem?

I have stayed in other hotels in Mahabaleshwar such as LakeView, Fountain, etc and all of them have decent rooms & service for a cheaper price tag. Moreover, Surya isnt worth because its not walkable distance from the market or the lake as comapred to other more reasonably priced and better hotels. The only USP about Surya is its balcony and view. But post 6 pm when it starts getting dark, one really cannot sit outside in the balcony because there are too many insects and bugs coming at you from the jungle ahead. The centrally AC doesnt seem to work much but since it was cold outside, we didnt bother and opted to turn the fan on. The service is good but the quality delivered is rubbish. The towels provided stinked and had stains all over (see picture). The pillow covers were v dirty too.

Now the worst part of this hotel was the food. Lunch was terrible and too limited in variety. 2 veg, 1 soup, 1 non veg...and thats about it. The paneer was hard and chewy and was floating in oil, the chicken was no way close to fresh and the the tomato soup was sour. We finished our lunch in less than 2 mins and went to the lake stalls and had awesome corn pattis. I cannot believe that the hotel charges 500 bucks for an adult for lunch (if you havent gone for the meal plan). Based on this, i asked the manager if i can go for just lodging to which he readily accepted (and the reservation offce told me that they only provide package deals) and said, if you dont go for meal plan, breakfast will cost you 200, lunch and dinner 500 each pp. Since i had no interest in eating at this hotel, i was totally ok with that deal. He said that lodging only is 500 less pp (cost of one meal pp).

But when we checked out, he just deducted 500 bucks instead of 1000 and he conveinetly said that lodging is total 500 less than the meal plan? and not per person?! How bizaare is that? If you add up individual meal prices for a couple its 2400 bucks and if you dont go for package its only 500 less?? I thought i was cheated but with a swear of never returning back to the hotel again, i moved on.

Conclusion: Food is pathetic. View is good only during AM. Rooms are decent but not clean. For the price paid = 8500, i would have def got a better value for money deal.

The Surya might have been good, but currently you should definitely avoid it! The pictures on their website have nothing to do with the present state of the hotel! Instead of closing it for renovation, they are still running it and charging the normal rate for a 5* hotel! The Hotel is still a construction site! Pool and most of the rooms look like a dump yard! Don't believe their pictures and don't waste your money to stay there!

The hotel has a huge structure with funny architecture. It has no elevator!

Front desk was not so friendly to begin with. We arrived just 15 minutes late for lunch and had informed them in advance about it but were not cooperated with. We had to accept some snacks instead. At times they would not even answer the phone!

The centralized air-conditioning was not working and in spite of complain, cooling did not improve. It was more pleasant outside than inside the room. Plumbing was even worst. It was giving out either extremely hot water or extremely cold. The shower mixer was useless.

Waiters for the room service were untrained and were humming tunes in front of me! Though buffet dinner was good, the number of items were limited. Ditto for breakfast.

Checking out experience was also not very smooth. There was no queue and others were given priority. I don't know where the GM of the hotel was sitting, because he was hardly paying any attention!

Room Tip: Go to the top floor of the hotel. Though there is no elevator, view gets better as you go up.
