The Sarai at Toria is a beautiful riverside retreat close to the World Heritage site of Khajuraho and to the Panna Tiger Reserve. The eight independent cottages are created in village style mud and thatch but have spacious contemporary interiors. The dining/sitting area is an open structure commanding serene and stunning views over the Ken river, to the park's hills beyond.

The Sarai at Toria, what to say? This is as close to perfection as it’s possible to get. We have travelled a lot, in India and elsewhere, and in our book the Sarai is definitely one of our top 10 destinations. If you come like us it’s probably because of proximity to the temples of Khajuraho and to the tigers of Panna. But when you leave what you’ll remember is so much more- the walk around the local villages, the cycle ride to the temple pool (replete with Sarus Cranes), the cricket played with local boys (he removed my off stump first ball, but the subsequent off and on drives meant I left with honours even), the early morning and late afternoon paddles on the Ken river (accompanied only by the ripple of the single oar), the food (this is Indian home-cooking and unlike much of

We stayed three nights at Sarah and enjoyed every minute of our stay. The cottages are comfortable, spotlessly clean and so quiet you could hear a pin drop, and creatures in the thatch! The food here is mainly grown in the vegetable garden and very tasty too. We loved the river trip and village walk, of course we took a dawn drive into Panna national park, we were not lucky enough to see any tigers but hearing them roar was sufficient. There is a abundance of wildlife in the park and the topography itself is worth a visit with or without the added lure of spotting any big cats. Highly recommended!

On our first trip to Indian and loving the experience but it can be exhausting at times. Our stay at Sarai rejuvenated us. Being surrounded by peaceful and beautiful scenery we relaxed and enjoyed the boat trips and bird watching walks. In contrast the jeep safari was a thrill, our guides were determined that we have the best chance to see wildlife and we were so lucky to spot both a leopard and tiger amongst many other animals. Staff at Sarai were friendly and we felt very pampered with a fire at night and hot water bottles in our beds. Lastly, but not least, was the delicious food. A great place to stay

Thank you, Sian H, for your review. India can be exhausting even for regular visitors or even those of us who live here! A little tranquility amidst the wonderful chaos does give respite. We are so glad you found this at the Sarai.

We spent three nights at Sarai at Torai and wish we had spent more. This is a wonderful property with a passionate and caring founder, Joanna. It is well situated close to Panna National Park ( saw 3 leopards and my first ever bear sighting) and 20 minutes drive to Khajuraho. The cottages are great and spacious with a lovely macchan and a sit out. The team was very friendly and helpful. Joanna and Raghu, take time out to spend with the guests and share their experiences of the jungle and city, which is extremely insightful and fascinating at the same time. Joanna, is just the loveliest lady to chat with and always ready to help with more information. The food was the key highlight. They offered a different spread for every meal, and each of them surpassed our expectations.

Khushboo, I am blushing - you are too kind on the personal front. Thank you for a lovely review. I thought the word “quaint” an interesting choice as I tend to associate it with “old-fashioned” and we like to think of the Sarai as cutting edge ☺ – at least on the eco hotel front! But then I found the lovely Mirriam-Webster definitions (“marked by skilful design”, marked by beauty or elegance”, “unusual or different in character or appearance”) so am hoping these were closer to your mind! We are very happy to hear that you enjoyed the food. Though a scientist, Raghu has a strong artistic side and the mix creates the magic in the kitchen. We do hope you may be able to return some time. We stopped over at the Sarai at Toria after a few days in Varanasi, and what a wonderfully peacefull place. It has 8 bungalows with immense bathrooms in wonderfull settings of tall grass. Breakfast and diner are served in the main lodge, diner is served after predrinks and nibbles by the firepit. The hosts Raghu and Joanna were both welcoming and attentive to our needs. The boat along the Ken was the most peacefull moment of our entire trip, the boatman was knowledgeable and had a great eye pointing out numerous birds and a croc basking on the rocks. The food and drinks were very good and after Varanasi it was a delight to have a peacefull G&T, i had unfortunately broight a bug with me so was.ill for 1 day for which i was lavised with Ginger tea to aid recover (thanks Joanna)
