The Sarai at Toria is a beautiful riverside retreat close to the World Heritage site of Khajuraho and to the Panna Tiger Reserve. The eight independent cottages are created in village style mud and thatch but have spacious contemporary interiors. The dining/sitting area is an open structure commanding serene and stunning views over the Ken river, to the park's hills beyond.

We stayed at Sarai at Toria for three nights and loved it. Khajuraho and its temples are nearby, but the resort itself is a sanctuary of peace and quiet, with nature all around. Our bungalow room in its jungle setting was large and comfortable, with a huge bathroom and all very clean. The staff were very helpful and professional. Our boat ride on the Ken river at first light was a highlight, with great birdlife. Breakfasts and dinner were all good, with a lemon souffle for dessert one of the highlights. A final touch after dinner was to find hot water bottles in your bed, very welcome on the cool February nights. Raghu's achievements in tiger conservation are an inspiration. We didn't chase tigers on this occasion, but Raghu instead organised an extra bird outing which was

Sorry for this late response and belated thanks for your review. Reading it now I am surprised to hear we were still requiring hot water bottles in February. This is unusual; but then much is, climate-wise, these days! Would you like to try one of the warmer months next time? We are glad you enjoyed it though and hope to see you again some time. Joanna

The Sarai at Toria is ideally situated to be used as a base for visiting the Khajuraho temples (30 mins away); Panna National Park and a place to chill besides the lovely river Ken. It is run by a tiger expert and a wildlife photographer who have a huge knowledge of the Panna park and the wildlife there. They have also created a beautiful lodge with excellent service and food. The rooms are in 8 cottages set in a lovely garden. The lodge is bordered by the river ken on which boat trips can be arranged. The food is excellent and served either in the main lodge or in the garden. Alcohol is available. The owners are passionate conservationists and the whole complex is as eco friendly as can be. The staff are friendly and attentive. The cottages are mud-faced and thatched, very

I love your review - succinct and informative. Thank you for this. We are really glad you enjoyed your visit and congratulate you on your 'slow travel', staying 4 nights in one place. So many guests are travelling with only two nights in each place and most regret this - especially at the Sarai! You set a good example. Thank you for reviewing us. "Tranquillity" is indeed what we like to highlight - it is such a contrast to many other places in India. In fact our tag line is 'Grassland tranquillity in the heart of historic Madhya Pradesh'. I first visited the Sarai 4 years ago and it is simply one of the most lovely places I have ever been to. A series of 8 mud-built cottages around a central lodge. The cottages are spacious and immaculately clean and the whole comples is very ecologically sound. Many visitors go to visit the Panna Tiger Reserve and when I was there last week, there were several sightings of both tiger and leopard although I saw neither on this visit. But tigers or no tigers it is a delightful place to spend time. The River Ken runs alongside the property and there are boat trips at bth dawn and dusk as well as walks through the local village. The food is the best Indian food I have ever had and Joanna and Raghu, who own the Sarai, are perfect hosts I know this review sounds a little over the

When I heard there were individual mud huts and this is India, I thought it might be a rustic sort of place. Then when I heard the cost I thought hmmmm. This is an ecology minded individual’s dream. Every detail is thoughtful and oh so beautiful. The food was delicious. Every meal remarkable. The people we met there were all so delightful. The staff helpful and completely on the job. We did not meet the visionary lady of the place but her mild mannered husband, Raghu, was a treasure trove of information. We were recharged by the tranquility of this amazing place.

First, a huge thank-you to Joanna and Ragu for their kindness and attention. The Sarai is beautiful, the food wonderful (I'm going to ask for a couple of recipes, it was that good), the insight into tiger behaviour in the Panna park was extraordinary, but what will stick is the kindness. It was unseasonably cold when we visited and my husband has Raynaud's, so we were given heater in our room, plus windproof jackets for game drives and hot water bottles when needed. Oh, and when the internal flight we should have taken was cancelled, they gave us a delicious packed lunch for the drive to Varanasi. Other highlights: the evening paddle on the River Ken, the walk through Toria village, lunches in the shade by the vegetable garden, being able to question Ragu about the tiger

We are so happy you enjoyed your stay: a big thank you to you for reviewing us here. We are pleased you enjoyed the food. A cookbook is on our list of to-dos but meanwhile do visit the blog on our webpage as it includes a few recipes from the Sarai kitchen! Stay safe!
