It's another world, the Varkala beach resort. Built around the eco-concept, it borrows its architecture from the natural science of the tribals. The handmade cottages made with mud, clay and flowers ensure maximum natural energy air flow, translate that into cool even during summer. In the midst of a thick green cover, and a 5-minute walk from the cliffs and the beach, The Bohemian Masala stands apart from the other beach resorts in Varkala. The resort promising all the sensual pursuits of a traveller, such as traditional temples, beaches, an eclectic food scene, as well as Ayurvedic massages, is ideal for a peaceful, tranquil vacation. Lounge around in the hammocks in peace and quiet, sample the traditional Kerala fare, walk around its herb and spice garden, or just sit around and meet interesting travellers from across the world. Those times, when you do feel like a walk, step out and hit the beach, indulge in water sports, or try your skills at surfing.

We stayed at the Bohemian Masala for 6 nights and enjoyed it thoroughly.
Albeit minutes a away from the Varkala cliff and beach the Bohemian Masala is is very quiet, only noises are from the birds in the beautiful garden.
The rooms are simple but comfortable and tastefully furnished, the veranda is fresh even during the hottest hours.
For breakfast we had every day a different south India delicacy cooked on the spot before our eyes.
The managers Dilip is very kind and helpful, he arranged for us a day trip to Kollam and Munroe island and transportation to the railway station.
All in all highly recommended

I have just returned from a week’s stay at The Bohemian Masala and found it to be wonderful. It was peaceful, friendly and I really couldn’t have asked for more. It’s a few minutes walk from the beach and the cliff top shops and restaurants but feels tucked away and in a magic world of its own. Rooms are very comfortable and artistic with a/c and fans and a generous verandah to shelter from the heat of the day. The breakfasts were delicious and substantial and I had daily Ayurvedic massages which have restored me in all sorts of ways. I was in my own and felt very safe and welcomed. Dilip was always on hand and the staff were lovely. Overall, I would wholeheartedly recommend that everyone takes some time out to visit.

I just returned from a 10-day stay in the Bohemian Masala.
I highly recommend this place, cool little cottages nestled in a beautiful well-kept garden filled with jackfruit, cashew nuts, pepper and wild birds.
I especially loved the swimming pool, without chemicals, where you can swim to the sight of multicoloured dragonflies and the sound of the birds.
The staff are lovely, and the manager Dilipp is ready to help with anything you need.
It is a world apart, just a few minutes' walk away from the busy cliff and the seafront.
Will look forward to coming back.

Excellent stay, excellent service. The property is very neat and well kept. It is also very close from the cliff.

The management is very friendly and helpful. 24/7 help is available. They even washed my car by the next morning.

And when I lost my jbl speakers, they found it and called and made me aware of it.
In short, superb stay worth 5 start rating.

I visited here and stayed for 1 week and I find utmost pleasure and peace from all the disturbances of outside commercial stay. I recommend this place as the manager mr. Dilip and and the staff found it very friendly and helpful and more importantly took care of me during my stay . Something we need in hospitality. The ambience is perfect for solace filled with greenery and natural scenic.

This was my third visit to this place and it was indeed a great break. Great place with mud cottages surrounded with lush green and fruits. You will get disturbed in the morning from none other than birds and squirrels..... It has a beautiful tiny pool... If you need any help here or nearby Mr.Dilip is at your call. Great gentleman with a helpful hand. No doubt, will visit again....

It was definately a highlight in our trip in India. It was the place were we relaxed the most. Great place to rest, relax, pamper yourself, enjoy nature, meditate, enjoy with your loved ones. Also great to have fun if you love nature!

The place is beautiful and super natural. We stayed in a very romantic mud hut. The hut has everything you need, it is super comfortable, and made of all natural materials. It is beautifuly hand painted with natural inks. The hut had our own deck, were we relaxed, had meals and used our computer to plan the rest of our trip (the wifi is fab!).

It was hot in Varkala but our hut was cool, plus the place is surrounded by trees and vegetation, so it feels fresh. I love that the deck had an outdoors fan.

The area is green and clean.

The staff is wonderful. Excellent human quality, big hearts.

The manager, Dulip, was super helpful with everything we needed, even using his own credit card to purchase our train tickets, since they were only accepting Indian cards. He also got us a nice scooter to move around. He helped us with everything we needed and was very happy to do so.

We stayed there two nights and then left to Munnar before returning to the Bohemian Masala for one last night. So we left all of our luggage safely with them and were very warmly welcomed back.

We were in our honeymoon and really wanted to have the experience of eating traditional Kerala Veg Tali served on leaves before leaving Kerala, so they made all the preparatives for our super romantic dinner for when we came back.... it was the best dinner of my life, no exaggerating. Everything was made with so much detail and love, it was a ceremony, a unique experience. We ate at the restaurant which is super beautiful.

I loved the Ayurvedic treatments and massages. My favorite was Shirodhara.

I really liked that the place has hammocks to chill out and a place to practice Yoga. The Spa is awesome, all made of mud, with many Ayurvedic treatments available.

We hope to go back soon!!!

We stayed for 5 nights at Bohemian Masala and loved every minute, it's probably one of our favourite places we stayed at in 2 months in Southern India.
The resort is set back from the main Varkaka drag which was great...you really felt like you we're in an exclusive place away from the crowds.
We stayed in a Cosmic cottage which was spacious, well designed and clean. The room was cleaned and tidied every day as well, something we didn't get in many other Indian hotels.
The breakfast was very good, a buffet style with fresh fruits, musli, breads and jams as well as more traditional Indian style dishes.
The staff were super friendly and always on hand to help. It feels like a new business, not in a bad way, but everyone is super, super keen to do all they can to make your stay perfect. It was so nice to stay somewhere where they actually gave a [--] about you and not feel like just another number in the books or cash in the tills!!

Compared to some other accommodation along the cliff this could be seen to be on the expensive side but its worth it for the service, the beautiful setting, gorgeous rooms and hearty breakfast and its still not expensive by western prices. Plus, compared to Goa where we stayed in similar accommodation ( but not as nice as bohemian masala) this is a bargain - we paid twice as much in Palolem for a hut!
I wish these guys the best of luck as they have something really special here...I would be surprised if they are listed on mr and mrs smith soon...get there while it's still inexpensive!!

I Had dinner at the Bohemian Masala in Varkala with a friend. We both ordered fish dishes to be honest the food was awful. We also ordered minestrone soup which was unedible. Our food took 1 hour 15 mins to finally come. The cook was tipsy and the reception staff was having alchohol on the sly. Really overpriced and a bit of a gimmick try eating where the locals go. The owner is really unfriendly too.
