Firstly my apologies for how long it’s taken to review Hari’s wonderful guesthouse. My boyfriend and I visited in February 2019 and stayed for 5 days, we loved it. Great community of people, we loved being able to mix with other guests at breakfast and lunchtime, after yoga sessions. The structure of the set routine of daily practice was calming and enjoyable, and was a great reset for our mindset, taking a break from the hectic life we led in London and focusing on some self care. Hari is a great guy, welcoming and with words of wisdom, as well as very funny! The meals we were served were such an amazing surprise and some of the best food we’ve had, inside and outside of India. Lovely staff working in the guesthouse and we felt completely free to come-and-to as we pleased. We would love to visit again. Hari, Sheba and everyone else from Sharanagati, we hope you’re taking care in this strange time, and thanks for your recent emails which cheered us up! Until we meet again, Siobhan & James x…
They have 2 houses where students are staying. Room was ok, but in the house were I was staying there was a kitchen not in use, they should have provided water and a kettle and tea bags to use in both houses not just in the one where the teacher is staying. Breakfast was just some fruit and oats, very poor after having 2h yoga in the morning, lunch was good. Classes were average, I have a low intermediate yoga level so I was expecting much more guidance from teacher, he never advised me, adjusted me or said anything at all to me regarding my yoga practice. A bit expensive for what you get.
My wife and I spent 8 nights here last month. After 2 weeks' cycling in South India immediately before, we arrived tired and stressed in mind and body. By the time we left we were fully relaxed and my body hasn't been so stretched out and flexible for years. Hari is superb as are his key staff, Sheeba and Sheela. Everything is so slow and peaceful and our fellow-guests, who came from all over the world , were a delight. I cannot recommend the Yogahaus highly enough and, if I do not return soon, I will be very disappointed in myself. Stephen
I spent twelve days in Sharanagati Yogahouse. Good programm, very delicious vegetarian food and very welcoming host Hari. Garden is tropical and beautiful. Yogahouse is simple and clean. After yoga, meditatsioon and pranayama you feel more relaxed and calm. Thank you!
Words can not express the connection, peace, yoga and overall experience Hari provides at Sharanagati. The yoga is authentic with focus on pranayama, asanas and meditation. The gardens are beautiful, peaceful and well maintained. And the food...Sheba’s meals are the best you will have. Listening to the birds and looking up into the trees as you practice is something you never forget. Hari’s attention to detail and welcoming way always makes you feel like you are coming home. This reflects in the interesting likeminded people you meet at Hari’s. We will see you again. Om shanti shanti shanti
Hari' expert tuition combines work on the body and through the breath, highly effective mind training . He'll remind you over and over again to "babysit the breath" or " breath and know you're breathing" whether you,re in down dog or a shoulder stand. The benefits: deeper sleep, lucid dreams and ( for me ) a rush of creative ideas ( I write) I can barely keep up with . All that plus Sheebs's cooking gets better each year and you meet the coolest most likeminded people at Hari's...so don't tel everyone!. David & Michele
I love returning to do yoga with Hari at his slice of paradise in Varkala. Hari has carefully created an environment with gardens that are beautiful & peaceful and practical providing fresh fruit and vegetables for meals. Hari provides yoga teaching, praniyama, meditation in a way that is easy to understand and follow. Its straight forward and honest teaching, Hari lets you choose to "marinate in your own stuff (not the word I want to use more sounds like hit with an S) or let it go". I learnt that Sharangati means surrender- which I did on my yoga vacation. The no phones rule meant I surrendered the need to constantly check my phone. This saw me connecting with other people, relaxing and resting and being present. Hari encourages personal growth and reflection, he joins the guests for meals and encourages conversation. On the flip side I love the discipline and boundaries in place, when we are reminded by Hari to avoid conversation and eye contact between meditation and yoga class. Sharangati Yogahaus attracts inspiring people that have interesting stories to share from all over the world. I meet guests from London, NY, NZ and many other places while we shared a yoga connection it was great to hear about their other passions. Conversations without distraction were meaningful and often funny, entertaining and inspiring. Going out at night with other guests meant as a solo traveller I had instant friends! I found myself getting a mental realignment along with improved asana after doing yoga twice a day along with breathing and meditation. Hari offers guests the opportunity to stretch your body and your mind, along with yoga classes twice a day Hari provides enlightening spiritual discussion where you can learn from his years of experience and knowledge. The options for relaxing are endless whether you choose the healing waters of Black beach or to chill out under a tree in a hammock. Hari has extensive local knowledge of the area and can steer you in the direction where you need to go, From visiting a temple, to Ayurvedic treatments, massage or even where to eat. Hari has adopted India as his home and will share his favourite places to go to in India along with local knowledge and customs. Its worth getting up early to see the rituals at the beach. Day 2 Hari took us as a group on a mindful walk along the beaches away from the cliffs to quieter fishing villages, where we spent time in silence walking and observing local fisherman. We then all had a delicious South Indian breakfast of idle and masala dosa at a local return of the tourist trail, with chai. I have stayed in the new accomodation and in the original house, both are very clean and beautiful. The beds have nets above them and ceiling fans. Showers in the ensuite have hot and cold water. This stay I had a room on the top level, with fantastic views of the garden. Hari's staff have an eye for detail, they light incense and provide flowers, plus the option to refill water with filtered water ensures your not adding to landfill. Hari has a great library that makes for enjoyable holiday reading between classes, you can learn more about the 8 limbs of yoga or read Shantaram. Sharangati yogahaus has everything you need for a comfortable yoga vacation, I loved how the repetitiveness of the yoga leads to improvements and muscle memory. While Hari's suggestion to Relax RELAX is a great idea to take away, back to reality. Hari is a refreshing yogi, I appreciated hearing about his journey to becoming a yoga teacher along with hearing him singing chanting throughout the day- high vibrations radiate here. Especially in the kitchen Sheeba makes the best vegetarian meals- her food is delicious and nutritious stopped all my cravings. I would love to take a cooking class with her (if thats ever an option). I find going to Hari's for yoga/breathing and meditation restores me and I go back home with more energy and compassion and improved mental capacity, able to slow down. Knowing whats important and whats not (self care and health). Thanks Hari for the reminder to relaX.…
I booked a week here initially and ended up staying 15 days. This retreat was special. The teacher, Hari, had a great program in place. You start out with 30 minutes of pranayama and other breathing exercises and then a 30 minute meditation followed by a two hour yoga class I like the way Hari structured the class in that he had you breathe into the asanas and I found that it really put me in touch with my body and I felt a mind body connection like I never had before by the end of my 2 week stay. Hari also has a 4pm class (one and a half hour) which I found reinforced the flexibility that was achieved in the morning. I was amazed at my rapid progress and I attributed that to the breathing technique he drills into you with each poise. Sheba prepared a healthy vegetarian breakfast and lunch with tea which was delicious and she let me watch her while she prepare lunch and generously explained what she doing. The ambience of the retreat was in itself peaceful, loving and an accepting environment. Everyone bonded quickly and we would dine together on the cliff almost ever night. I have to say this was the best retreat experience I have ever had. I am so grateful for my experience there and I intend to make this a yearly pilgrimage. The last thing I wanted to add is that Hari kept reminding us of our spiritual nature and how important it is to stay conscious of that. Thank you, thank you, Hari.BTW. Other people ( at least 2 that I know) came and booked short stays (wanted to test it out I guess) and ended up extending there stays as well. This kind of retreat was exactly what I needed and I HIGHLY recommend it .…
I spent 6 nights here and definitely recommend! Hari is brilliant. He takes time to teach you at the end of each session and is always there if you have any questions. The lunch they prepare is one of the tastiest meals I’ve eaten in India, and the retreat seems to draw in such wonderful, warming people. We went for group dinners every night and it honestly felt like leaving a little family!
What an amazing experience! I spent 5 nights at Sharangti and I can truly say, it’s the real deal. The physical space feels like Paradise - greenery everywhere, beautiful orchids and a balance of natural yet kept landscape. The food prepared was exquisite: simple yet flavorful. Vegetarian. Healthy. The schedule of the day was the perfect balance of structure with built in time for exploration and self reflection. 3 hours in the morning and 1.5 in later afternoon. Hari is so flexible and accommodating. There were all levels of individuals during my stay and he was effortlessly able to accommodate each of them. Highly recommend it for anyone looking for a retreat focusing on replenishing themselves - their minds- body’s and souls! Not only focusing on asanas but breath work and meditation techniques! Very powerful!…
