Detailed Reviews
Highly recommend Shiva Garden in Varkala, had a great 4 night stay at the beginning of my trip in India.
Highlights: staff are so friendly, welcoming, helpful and really accommodating. Food is nice and a wide range on offer and someone is always around to serve you. Yoga Shala available to use at your leisure, they also put classes on. Really nice garden chill out area to meet people or just relax. Also just a short walk from the cliff.

A friend of mine and I stayed at Shiva Garden for 2 weeks in January 2015.
You hear beautiful things about Shiva Garden, but none of them cannot compare to the feeling you get the first time you step into the garden... Calm, green, comfy, beautiful are just some of the words that come to your lips.
All the staff is extremely nice and helpful and will cater to your every need (one day jackfruit fell from the tree and they gave everyone to try it). There are all types of lodging available, for all pockets: from rooftop tents (we stayed in one) and dorms, single and double rooms, tree huts, apartments... But the best thing in Shiva Garden is it's garden with fruit and palm trees, all the shade, hammocks to be lazy in or talk to many other nice guests staying there, big living room, badminton/volleyball field, basketball... You don't even need to go out and you will have fun the whole day and you won't be hungry because there's a little kitchen that serves delicious south indian food.
Two weeks passed quickly and we were sad to leave our new home and new family, because that is how you feel if you stay there! :)

Shiva garden is a wonderfull place. Makes you feel at home. Don't get me wrong, it's not as Europe, it's wery exoctic. Beautifull garden with hamocks, a very high swing, badmington feeld, outdoor showers, traditional Kerala food...but most of all is a place where people meet each other and make new frindships. You can also chill in your quiet room or dorm but the best is to go to the garden and say hello to someone new and then miracles happen. I must say I find these place wery spiritual too. I see it like a non formal ashram where people by themselves create activities and become good teachers to each other. I warmlly recomend this place. To get the best out of it, try to do some work around the garden and some Karma yoga, helping to make these place as nice as your home because that's what Shiva garden is, your home abroad. Salute to all the nice stuff of Shiva garden, and keep on the good work. See you next season.

Such a fantastic guesthouse: friendly and helpful staff; large and clean rooms to suit every budget; wonderful gardens; tasty food served from the kitchen; and many fun parties.
My first stay here (2 months) was in room 106: huge 1st-floor room with king-size double bed; en-suite shower/wc; mosquito net; ceiling fan. So much cheaper, and so much cleaner than the rooms I'd seen on the cliff, and yet only a 5 minute walk away. I settled in quickly, met so many inspiring people, and found it very hard to leave.
AND very hard not to come back: which I did, and stayed for another 2 months in 1 of the 4 apartments.... HUGE double bedroom with a very grand and spacous en-suite bathroom, and a reception room with chaise longue, TV, and kitchenette.
But it's the communal garden that is Shiva Garden's ace card: a great place to relax, eat, lay in a hammock, play badminton, and meet many of the wonderful guests that are drawn to this fantastic place.
If you plan to visit Varkala, Shiva Garden is THE place to stay. Whatever your budget, there's an apartment/room/dorm bed to suit you. You won't be disappointed. ENJOY!!!

After a long week of work I arrived at Shiva Garden on Friday night. I was actually planing to come the weekend before, but couldn't make it and it was no problem at all to just postpone my booking. I also spontanously braught 3 friends along and that also was easy going. They even picked us up from the train station for free and when I entered Shiva Garden's door I felt like walking into paradise. Everything is so green, there heaps of hammocks, a giant swing and a big chill area to just stay and not leave ever again =) everybody was sooo nice and welcoming and I met so many cool backpackers. So it's a perfect place to get in touch. I stayed at the dorm up on the roof, with the sky as a blanket and beautiful sonia's yoga class to wake up to. If you want something simple, but creative and with a wonderful spirit to it...Shiva Garden is your place! I will definetly have it as my treat after my working weeks =)

Made my trip a dream! The staff are friendly, there's badminton, rooms are enormous considering price, dogs are cute, great for local knowledge, friendly travelers, easy access to the beach, food is malayali, there's a convenience store opposite, nirvana yoga next door. My only complaint is that the WiFi is patchy, but this will be the case literally everywhere. Buy an MTS dongle if you want decent internet. There is some bureaucracy, but it's definitely worth it.

Accommodation
We were a huge and enthusiastic (read raucous) group of 8 and we found Shiva Garden the best to accommodate us. We had booked two apartments over phone and contrary to quite a few reviews on Tripadvisor, we got our apartments as soon as we arrived. The apartments felt like home. The wash rooms were spacious and clean. There was a well equipped kitchen as well (which we did put to good use).
There was a spacious garden just in front of the apartments which was part of Shiva Garden. There were hammocks strung to trees. There were provision for every sport to be played. You name it and they had it. For a sport enthusiast like me, it was a huge plus. We had a memorable game of volley ball on our second day of stay. There was a huge hullabaloo over the game but the staff had no qualms whatsoever which is worth mentioning.
The dining arrangements were in the garden itself.
There was a small library adjacent to the dining place (amongst the trees) as well.
There were a lot of activities that Shiva Garden offered (though we were out of time to try them out) including boating trip to Golden Island. They even gave bicycles/scooties for rent.
The whole set-up in the garden had an aura to itself which made our stay in Shiva Garden so memorable.
(*There are different kinds of accommodations within the Shiva Garden premises which fits all group sizes and pockets. There are tents, dorms and tree houses as well that you can avail).
Food
The food was on the expensive side (taking into consideration the quantity) and service was a bit slow which we considered given the fact that it is a small, family-run business. The food quality was good though.
Tea and coffee served weren't really up to the standard I must say.
Staff
The staff here needs special mention. They tended to us with a smile all the time. They were gracious and courteous to say the least and they had no complains in spite of us testing their patience at times.

I reserved a room here and at the time of arrival they said they were fully booked and showed me to a resort close by, which was not nice a all. They didn't even bother to apologize. Unfortunately I didn't pay any attention to former warnings who reported the same. Shiva Garden seems to have a deal with the Guest House next door, which was confirmed by other travellers. Do not support this commercial handling of travellers!

Response from shivagarden, Manager at Shiva Garden
Responded 3 Feb 2015
Shivagarden is a small family run business. We have experienced many no show ups and it put us in a very difficult situation. At times we gets over booking (not on a usual basis) and in situation like that we help our customers to find another place. It is not a business but only a service. No one is forced to stay the alternative place and this service is free of charge. Hope you would understand.
