Do not go by the look of the property, staff here lacks professionalism. It is run by kids, which is why there is no proper service. Do not take the wooden room- LOFT otherwise you will have to deal with lizards and other insects. The place is beautiful has a private access to the beach too but it is a zero at the service level. I won't recommend it because you will get better place at the price they offer room in.

We stayed here for twelve nights and really enjoyed the cliff top location above the stunning beach accessed by a steep winding but safe path. The staff were especially friendly and helpful. The a la carte dining was tasty if over priced. Chef is a lovely character and takes pride in his work. He even allowed us to make our own Dosa's for breakfast. The room was average, and three times we had to ask for it to be cleaned. We were regularly awoken at 4am by street noise and un thoughtful staff talking loudly and banging doors. We did not hear the 20 swedes entering the building for their 5.30am yoga session on the roof. We committed to a 10 day Ayurveda package. Our yoga instructor Saji had beautiful energy as he patiently guided us for 1.5 hours each am. The yoga platform is in a stunning location at the cliff edge, but was dirty and staff threw rubbish over the cliff edge which was a real shame. Despite mentioning this early on to the management no efforts were made to clean up. The Ayurveda doctors were very kind and patient with us, doing there best to answer our questions. My massage therapist Velu is a lovely man, very caring , thorough and professional. Vicki's were a bit more hit and miss and seemed less attentive to the details that make for the best experience. The Ayurveda buffet was certainly healthy , mostly tasty and adequate. We both feel much healthier and I lost 2.5kg! Over all the yoga and Ayurveda course of treatment were successful for us, however the cost and lack of attention to detail in the hotel left us feeling the experience was poor value for money, so please drop your prices and/or get the details right. You could be special with a bit more effort

Response from TheOceano, General Manager at Oceano By Trouvaille
Responded 13 Dec 2014
Thank you so much for your valuable feedback  We are very happy to hear the Ayurveda Treatment has made its positive result to your general health, in case you need any further feedback from our side kindly let us know. We also would like to apologies again for that one time incident of our staff being too noise at around 2am in the morning, that was most unthoughtful of them and they were sincerely sorry for this, but luckily this all had been cleared the day itself  Regarding the waste disposal, to kindly let you know we have not been sitting ideal on this matter as we do care…a lot. Still your postal is a good support for us in this matter as sometimes the word from the management alone is not enough. They need to have evidence that it disturbs the guest and that they are unhappy with this matter. The awareness of disposable and non disposable waste still has to develop among our people so therefore we start now a weekly course on waste and the effects of it in our environment. I truly hope it might help changing their point of view. As our local government (municipality) doesn’t collect waste from any of the hotels and resort in Varkala this becomes a common problem of the Varkala society. We try our best to guide our staff to separate the decayable waste from the non decayable. The decayable waste helps in fertilizing our ground so the cliff can stay strong against braking like is happening in other parts on the cliff. We do all effort to protect the cliff and maintain the natural balance by making a lot of plants grow from the sea shore to the top of the cliff. Plastic will be washed and sold, as paper, carton, glass etc. Till now we have been the cleanest part of the cliff and we intent to stay like that, but as we still are all human being our employees also can make mistakes. Hope your continuing trip to Munnar is being a memorable one! Thank you again and wish you all the best, has been a pleasure having you here 

We stayed in this property perched on a cliff face for 6 days camping 5 days in the wooden loft and 1 day in the suit. Both has its unique cosiness and difficult to say which is a better. The wooden loft on the 1st floor has a rustic romance with rooms at the side having a fleet of windows opening the full wall on one side, while the French doors opening into the sea with the flora acting as a subtle curtain and some fauna making friendly visits. The suit on the contrary is on the 2nd floor and is concrete structure with a anteroom and a bedroom with a small verandah and a sumptuous bathroom.
The kitchen staff (Arun & team) is great and very very hospitable. The breakfast is a nice Indian spread, while the Lunch & Dinner priced perfect and a good choice. The best part is dining at the huts watching the sea early morning, afternoon with the kites flying around giving company, while the nights are mystical wonder with the fishing boats lighting up the horizon. Dont miss the Dog "Lucy" who would accompany you down the cliff across the twisting steps into the virgins beach. If she finds you worthy enough, will then show you her skills of catching crabs and accompanying you in the surf and gallop across the water front.
The reception team needs more training & information in hand to help the guest with basic information like shopping etc. Don't take the cabs from the hotel since charge nearly double the rate, rather take a scooty and scout out for taxi stands near the station. We were lucky to meet a very genuine gentleman cabby named Uni (+91 90 48 555 026). He is very reasonable and can also guide you to great food joints across the countryside.

One thing which left us with a bad taste is the refusal by the the receptionist (Anuraj) to give us a bill for the payments we paid with taxes. He said will mail me in 1 days and its no where in the inbox or spams. All hotels across India are prompt in giving a bill after payment, may be in Kerala its different, but after paying along with service tax we are entitled for a bill. Will wait for 1 week or will have to check with the service tax rules pertaining to Kerala, on why this avoidance on not giving a bill.

We contacted this hotel based on it’s decent T/A reviews. However, unfortunately (which is generally not the case since we LOVE T/A reviews) we were disheartened and displeased with this accommodation. Sorry… 

Since we were travelling with kids the European lady who we'd been communicating via internet suggested us to stay at their annex property that had a swimming pool. We were offered Deluxe Loft which turned out to be a disaster. They charged us INR 30000 (1 USD= INR 63 or 1 euro=67) for 4 nights; which was VERY high price based on the low quality of this hotel and the rooms they provided to us. We are seasoned traveler and have been to 6 continents (Antarctica is still on the bucket list) so we feel our expectations tend to be low key and we understand the cultural difficulties/differences. Prior to travel and when requested; the hotel only provided us 2 pictures of the property when we made reservations. One of the swimming pool and the other of the gardens facing the beautiful Arabian Sea. In retrospect; we now realize why……

The annex turned out to be a dirty and dusty construction site. The rooms were eclectic at best with raw concrete as “décor” and a few wooden planks to walk on. Construction workers and trash was everywhere. Food was overpriced and wifi never worked. (Manager: Sir/Madam: No problem, just wait 10 minutes...) There were several safety hazards that would never fly in places that are kept well: 2 uncovered deep wells, 8 feet rocky drop to the beach (unsafe access to the beach), huge uncovered and open electric panels. Gecko (lizards) and huge spiders were also a common siting inside the room.

In their defense the European lady (turned out to be the reservations manager/front & not the owner) who was very nice did offer us rooms at the main facility but since we were travelling with kids we decided to stay at the rooms provided to us and just hang out at the mediocre swimming pool. They have some nice sea frontage... We give them that.

Overall, we truly wish our experiences were better and more memorable.

We arrived there and were unpleasantly surprised. The people there were unfriendly, the kitchen was dirty and the room was very small. The first thing we saw was a cockroach. The only thing which is superb is the location.
We had to change the hotel immediately.

We booked (and paid!!!) this hotel for three nights, but practically 'ran' away after about 20 hours. We were so very disappointed!!!

The whole idea and reason for choosing this hotel was, that it spoke of a loft with balcony and sea views.

We arrived at the hotel after quite a rough taxi ride of 5 hours at 8 in the evening.

The loft was very spacious and light. Clean too. But really basic, almost spartanic.

The rates btw are not cheap, for Indian standards. Not sky high either, so I was not expecting a 5 star hotel or anything.

Ok, so basic, but let's look at the balcony and view: a thick 'forest' of tree trunks from the garden. Oh my, no sitting on the balcony watching the sun come up or go under. Not reading a book on our private balcony while staring over the ocean.
That set the tone immediately.

Without AC (which I knew when I booked it, but did not hv a clue tt it would be so hot) it was SO SO SO hot in the room!!!

I have to admit, that once you are disappointed (and again and again) you tolerate less and less, while if you are happy with a hotel, you tend to be more forgiving. I try to be as honest and objective as possible here;-)

We went down to the hotelrestaurant, semi open air, no fans, so also steaming hot out there. On the menu was a lot, also there were about 5 dishes with beef and I went for one of those. "No, we do not have the beef. And not that. And not that." Getting grumpy. There was one staff member walking around to serve all the guests. So even the bottle of water took ages to come to the table. Hey, it was warm! "No, we have no chilled drinks....but we can give ice." Double grump. My husband wanted a beer. "No, we don't have alcohol. You have to ask for it an hour in advance and we will get it for you." Triple grump.

Slow service, a lot of no's, and no smiles or anything.

The room was noisy from the street side. And did I mention that it was hot?

Breakfast was basic and limited. The same one guy was waiting tables AND baking eggs in the tiniest possible frying pan.
Ofcourse there was nothing like cappuccino or espresso. But maybe good black coffee? With warm milk? There was a giant pot where a watery light brown liquid came from. I thought it was tea. "No, ma'm, Kerala coffee." Yaiks....

The evening before I had seen a breakfast menu, so I asked to order a la carte. "No, not possible. We DO have breakfast a la carte, but not during breakfast, because then we are too busy with breakfast." Tsssss.....getting pissed of here.

There were some uncomfortable lounge chairs in the garden where u could put a yoga mat on. You could climb the long, long way down...and the more challenging way back up...to the beach. Gorgeous, small and totally empty. Not a bed, nothing. Again you could bring a yoga mat down.

Ah, well, you got the picture by now.

I spoke to the manager that morning, Maria, who turned out to be Dutch, like me. She showed me some other rooms that had a slightly better view and was willing to help us. But with all the other limitations, another room would not have changed that.

It all simply did not feel like a relaxing holiday at all.

The views from the cliff down to beach and sea were stunning, that is for sure.

And there were other guests, more the alternative and ayurvedic ones, I think, who seemed fine with this hotel.

We made a big mistake in booking this hotel. Partly my own fault. This is not our type of hotel.
Having said that: also a simple, cheaper hotel should be service oriented and have enough staff walking around.

So if you are the ayurvedic yoga type who does not mind to pay a lot for a primitive stay in a beautiful environment then this is the place for you. If not, stay away.

I made the mistake of coming here for dinner. The food was completely over priced and very mediocre. Very lacking in taste . There was live music. I was shocked they kept playing with a distorting speaker. It's not hard to disconnect one speaker. Won't come back here again.

What a mistake.... service terrible, room without any charm, we been charged two time when we've booked and it took us one month to get the money back... Perhaps, it's just not our taste but we really not enjoyed our stay there. Bottom line, if you don't look for a tourist place, just walk away.,,,

Not worth the money at this point, but here ya go...
Anyway they are only 100mts down the road from each other but Eco is still being built. First, there is Oceano Eco and Oceano Original Auryvedic something...
I booked original property but because of leaks from the monsoon (understandable but no excuse) I stayed down the road in Eco. They have non-AC rooms but I stayed in the AC room on second floor corner. They need to get rid of the disgusting shower curtains and this room would be perfect. Great view of pool and cliff. Very little hot water but it was so hot anyway that I let it go. AC was so good I actually froze at night.
Room was clean but rest of property TOO dirty. Shower for pool was beyond disgusting, dirty table cloths in "restaurant" which is kinda a eating area but not well equipped at all...again, the build may take care of it.
Access to beach is NOT elderly and kid friendly but maybe they are adding steps in the build?

Myself and four friends spent two weeks travelling around Kerala. We stayed in 6 hotels and although Oceano Cliff was not horrendous it had the second highest price tag and i feel it was the most disappointing.

1. The location - the lovely grounds and proximity to a fab beach definitely gives the hotel its charm. I spent a few hours reading in the hotel gardens and it was idyllic. If you are visiting the hotel for an Ayverdic treatment programme and intend to stay on site then i think the grounds would be very relaxing. However I would say that if you want to spend time at the livelier north cliff the hotel is not in the best location for you. You either need to get a tuk tuk or take a 20 minute walk (a struggle in the extreme heat). Both doable but not as convenient as other hotels.

2. The accommodation - the rooms were okay. We liked the different decor in the rooms and it was great that bottled water was provided each day. They were also clean which was great. But they could do with some TLC. The bolts on one of our doors were very rusty which meant that you couldn't pull them across at night. In addition, rhe fan was broken in one of the rooms when we arrived so two of us had to move rooms for the first night and on the final morning none of the showers in our block worked - which was far from ideal in the heat!

3. The Staff - Maria, who I assume was the owner? - emailed me in advance to confirm the booking and with information about the hotel and she was very helpful during our stay. Most of the restaurant staff were also smiley, friendly and helpful. However, overall I felt that most of the staff were not as friendly and approachable as the other places we stayed.

4. The food - when we arrived after a 4 hour journey we had no choice but to eat at the hotel for lunch. The food was tasty and authentically cooked but the service was extremely slow and the prices were way above average. In addition, the breakfast was poor. The choice was limited, the food that was there was not very nice, and the hygenie - if you opened the dish with fruit in it was full of flies...

5. Finally, on our second night we were asked (told?) to be quiet by a fellow guest because someone in their group was sleeping. We would have had no problems with this if a) it was late or b) we were being unruly and loud. However, it was before 10 and we were playing a pictionary game while sitting round a table. The man on reception appeared to back up the lady which frustrated us more so we went to bed - we may have laughed loudly a few times but we had paid to stay at the hotel too and felt we should be able to enjoy your evening.

Overall, the hotel was ok but with so much choice in Varkala I would not immediately recommend this hotel.
