Having seen the pictures of Eden Garden my daughter shared with me as we planned our India trip, I was really excited to stay here. On arrival we were kept waiting to sign in, the rooms were nothing like the romantic pictures on the sight, and I have to admit to being quite let down and disappointed. During our stay it appeared to us that the volunteer staff felt their conversations and presence were far more important than us mere paying guests, and we had booked a cooking lesson due to start initially at 5.00, which eventually started nearer 7.00, we cancelled and found food elsewhere. Having one of the volunteer staff telling us about the lack in organisation of the owners really doesn’t work when you should be having the experience of a lifetime at what is a quite beautiful retreat. I would not recommend this location to anyone to stay at, but Varkala as place is one of the most beautiful, just find a better hotel.

Despite the charming environment, we were really disappointed by our stay and the service level, not in adequation with the requested fees (between 15.500 roupies and 20.000 roupies for a 3-days treatment, excluding the Dosha consultation). We stayed five days there and had an ayurvedic treatment / cure for three days. During such a treatment, you expect to be fully taken in charge, body and mind. Unfortunately, we have faced, on a daily basis, numerous situations of serious lack of organisation, that led to an unrelaxed atmosphere, the opposite of what you expect during an ayurvedic treatment. For example, we had no information, except those provided in the initial fee quote (received the day before our arrival), concerning the time schedule, the treatments to be received and the meals. We could also feel the tension within the working team. They tried to fix it during the following days and to provide us with more information. But each day, we had new "surprise" (our room doors were left open with our valuable inside, after cleaning, delays, etc.). The meals were supposed to be personnalized but, except one meal, all of us got the same food (very basic), including our friend who did not take part to the treatment (for 350 roupies/meal). The doctor, who was very professional and friendly, tried her best to provide us with the best treatment, but could not compensate all the lack of organisation. The owners, who have been very pushy for us to pay in advance due to a lack of cash, were more reluctant to hear our feedback at the end of our stay. In conclusion, this treatment was too expensive for the service level provided, not due to the treatment itself but due to the constant disorganization.

Eden Garden is well-located very close to the beach. You walk down a dirt track bordered by water to get to the resort area. This can be slippery and a little scary at night as not particularly well-lit the entire way. Our check-in was ok. Owners seemed polite. Our room (number 0 I think), was simple yet tastefully decorated with nice furniture. Unfortunately, the whole place needed a good wash and scrub! The bathroom was pretty grim and requires maintainence. The mosquito net over the bed was well-used and had holes all over it. Luckily, I had a number of safety pins in my bag to fix the larger holes for our two-night stay. It is in a jungle-type area, so lots of animals and bugs. We had a number of ants in both the bedroom and bathroom, lizards too. A snake managed to get under our bedroom door so this does require some looking at! (My husband managed to scare it away and we stuffed t-shirts in the gap to prevent a repeat..!) The place has the ability to be AMAZING, but the rooms do need some tough TLC!

We booked Eden Garden, excited to sleep in the Mushroom-style villa... Upon arrival we were told it's actually 3 times the price. We were then put into a very basic room in the back. The treatment was both rude and dishonest. We said, we booked because we are travelling artists and wanted to experience this unique architecture and we don't usually 'splash out' like this. They did not care and blatantly said that they use that picture to get people to book.. even thought it was low-season and all the mushroom houses were empty, they wouldn't fulfil the advertised image unless we paid more money. Appalling to say the least.

Eden Garden is a simple, cozy hotel mixed with bohemian charm. I like the overall room interior decor a lot. It doesn't have any ocean view. But beach is just walking distance away. Overall, it delivers great value on what it charges. However the property is very loosely managed, almost mindless, that may not fit the need of high-maintenance type of clients --- The reception counter is not always staffed, staffs have pretty limited English understanding, and there had been chaos on finding my hotels.com bookings and payment. The massage I had was awful. The masseur just arrived the hotel for two month. Definitely not very skilled --- I tried the "General Massage" and felt just like a Marsala chicken totally rubbed in oil afterwards, that's it. I saw people have better massage experience here, so I guess if you do want to massage here, definitely choose your masseur!
