Mad about coco is an amazing vibe. It doesn't feel like an accomodation, it feels like home. Right on the cliff of Varkala Beach, Mad about coco is the best place to be. Amazing staff at the counter Samuel helped me a lot during my entire trip. Niyas who provides transportation to the guests in Mad About Coco will not just drive you around. He is like a family member who makes sure all your needs during travel(food, hotels, places to stop for sightseeing) are met. Thanks to everyone.

Great location just by the beach in Varkala. The room has everything you need, simple but nice. The hangout areas are very nice and feel very safe. The breakfast is amazing. The staff is so friendly and work really hard. If I ever go back I would stay here…

If you’re in a dilemma about whether to visit Kerala this year due to the floods then you can rest assured that you will have no problems in Varkala. We too were unsure if we should cancel our trip to Kerala but we decided to visit the capital, Kovalam, Varkala and Kollam - all without issue.
Our stay at Mad about Coco was great. We were met and subsequently looked after by a lovely team of people and animals. Anita and her staff were helpful with local tips and assisted us in laundry service and in renting a scooter. The room was clean and large with a comfy bed covered by a mosquito net. It had nice balcony with a super comfy swingy chair. We had booked an AC room but didn’t actually require it so therefore we were not charged the rate - very fair!
Smoothie bowls for breakfast were great. They were working on their menu for high season but everything we had and saw looked great. Slightly on the pricier side but you get what you pay for including a nice shady, comfy, clean setting with WiFi.
Our only complaint was some mould around the edge of the sink. However, during our stay there was lots of painting/ decorating/maintenance so you should find the place even fresher.
Oh ps you get free filtered water refills.

Nice place with friendly staff and nice vibe in general let down by couple of points. Firstly on booking.com it said air conditioning is optional at extra charge but both rooms we stayed in didn’t have that option. That needs to be corrected on booking.com. Quite a big deal when it’s 33 degrees. Next problem was that on checkout payment , as what has happened in a few Indian places they told me I had to pay in my home currency. Firstly this is illegal under MasterCard registration. The customer has to have option of local currency. When telling them I didn’t want to pay in pounds they told me I could choose ruppees after I entered my pin. This is simply wrong as by that point and as per my receipt I had a “mark up 3.5%” added to my charge for the conversion which I didn’t want. They said some rubbish about how it doesn’t matter and it’s a good rate and then they said how their bank rates are bad or something and how this bank Axis does this. This is totally untrue . And anyway, which one is it ? Is it you don’t like charges or there’s no choice and it’s good for me anyway? I find it massively disingenuous for an establishment that prides itself on being friendly and open to westoners to use a system sneakily to make more money and misinform the customers. If u want to charge me more for using a card, let me know that’s the case. don’t lie to me about you having to charge in my home currency because your bank in India won’t let u charge ruppees. Absolute nonsense. It’s complete lies and scam basically . Really sad that the German Indian owner lady tries this absolute lies . Shameful really deceiving customers. Most people, if not all, won’t even notice what’s happened but they need to stop getting away with it .

Sorry you fraud, you are misjudging and wrongly accusing us! We gave you the choice and you made the choice! Did you forget about it? We have the prove on the slip signed by yourself! Talk to your bank before you misjudge me personally and my business! I already sent you the prove, check your mails and think before you misjudge people in public! Your behaviour is disgusting and you should be ashamed! Also we do have the option for AC rooms, unfortunately you only got our last room without AC, means the option for AC was simply not available anymore. We were sending you a detailed message about your chosen room category and even when you checked in we explained again that in this low budget category there is only a ceiling fan available. We offered you an upgrade in case a booking gets cancelled! Do you remember? Think or ask first before you write nonsense about wrong details in the listing! Your entire review is misjudging and therefore rubbish!

I stayed for a night at this property and the only plus is its location. I booked room which is listed as twin room with terrace, hoping I will get my own private terrace or balcony - but I was given a ground floor room. When I asked about the terrace, the guys said the building has a terrace which I can use. The room and bathroom were neat and clean. Mind you, there is no AC in the room and it can get quite hot during the night considering the Kerala climate. You are paying almost 4000+ rs and there is not even mineral water kept in the room or no breakfast included. Hence I felt the price you pay is not really worth it even though they claim it is because of the season.
The road to this place is difficult to find and dont rely on google maps. Also if you have an SUV, you may land in trouble and have to park outside.
The only advantage is the accessibility to the cliff which is right infront. (doesn't mean you have a beach/cliff view). We visited their cafe, NOMAD for breakfast. Nice staff and nice ambience, but exorbitant prices. 2 boiled eggs will cost you 160 rupees!
Choose this place only when the rates of room are well below 2000 rupees! Not happy at all.

Dear RSV99, thank you for reviewing us but we actually have some doubts that you were staying at all in Mad about Coco. 1. Absolutely all of our 15 rooms have a Balcony on the upper floors and terraces/ verandas on ground floor. There is not one single room coming without a private hangout outdoor area equipped with hanging chairs lounge sofas, tables and clothes racks. it's not possible to not seeing them as you are entering the room on ground floor from the furnished terrace/ veranda. 2. We offer in various common areas on our property free water refill stations where you can get as much free drinking water as you want. For that service we are offering a glass bottle in every room. 3. Breakfast is included when you pay for it in advance. 4.For our non-AC rooms we had in December a maximum rate of 3500/- per night, including breakfast 5. The location is perfectly set with GPS on Google maps and even trucks can enter our property where we are offering up to 3 parking slots for cars and more than 10 bikes/ scooter. We are one of a very few properties in Varkala offering parking facility. We even offered you to book your space in advance. 6. When you compare our rates with most of the neighbour houses with less facilities and lower standard then a rate below 4000/- in the Christmas/ New Year's Season in the prime location is a great deal. The rent we pay for the two Guesthouses and the huge Restaurant in the absolute prime location with sea view, salaries for 30 employees and the electricity bills are exorbitant, but Eggs with Butter and Brown Bread for 160rs are actually not! When this is too much for you we suggest to stay at home, especially in the most busy and expensive time of the year - all over the world! Your Mad about Coco Team

It's not common I have so many things to say about a 2 nights stay.
First the place is well located even if not so close to the beach as you have to walk further to go down from the cliff.
Rooms buildings are nice, rooms are spacious enough and the balcony very Cosy.
But the management is careless.
Here a list a few things happening within those 2 days :
- on the way, Google maps gave us the way through a dead-end alley. We called the hotel to know which way we should take, they ask us to text them on whatsapp to get the proper location. We did accordingly but we never got any answer. They call us back, not to help us but to ask our reservation number.
-at arrival, they said they have problem because I didn't do the pre payment they were asking for by message under on my confirmed booked room. What's the point to use booking if you have to go to another website to pay in advance??
-they ask me to cancel my reservation on booking even if it was indicate I will be charged for the cancellation (as the hotel do not allow to cancel for free) to pay directly with them.
- don't expect the staff to help you with your luggage. Even it is not mandatory it is always appreciate.
-at arrival in the room, a information paper is there. You will be aware of all extra cost hotel will charge you if you want them the change the bedding, if you change the lock of the room, etc. But don't expect useful information on breakfast time, wifi password,...
-I text them on WhatsApp for a question, but the answer was "I'm not on site ! Message this number xxxxxxxx" (yet it is the number of the hotel)
- linens and pillows were smelling sweat. Either not changed before our arrival either not properly cleaned. They changed it, and then it was better.
- in the morning, without information on breakfast, we went to the reception at 8:30. Nobody was there. Not only at reception in fact, there were no staff nowhere. We left the hotel without the include breakfast.
-at 12 we came back, they gave us ticket for breakfast saying they couldn't find us earlier. and tell us we can go to the restaurant (the breakfast happen in "Sun Franscico" restaurant nearby) this same day for lunch or dinner.
-We went to "Sun Franscico" explaining the situation. They said they were aware and ok for dinner. We took the menu and sat. We were the only customer and there was 5 staff. We kindly waited 30 min for someone to come take our order, after what we decide to leave.
Honestly, at that point I started to be furious !
Later on the hotel staff came to me on whatsapp to apology once again... But it's too much !!
At the end I ask for refund of the breakfast for the 2 days, and a small extend of check-out time (12 instead of 11) and they accept both.
But at the end, I had the feeling I'm not welcome there.
My mistake is I pay the 2 nights when I arrived, because they ask for. Even that is weird.
Otherwise I would have paid my night and run away of this place!)
At the end my experience matched all the bad comments. I can hardly explain why this place is this much well ranked.
Advice for customers : You will find plenty of hotel half the price around this one, as comfortable and way more respectful !

Great Yoga classes held by a very nice instructor. Beautiful outside areas. Very close to the beach. Rooms are big enough, well maintained and there’re enough closets and shelves inside the room.
We booked the “Double Room with Balcony” but got the “Double Room with Garden View”! Although, we raised the issue of the room assigned to us having a terrace instead of a balcony right at the check in, no one cared about it. The staff pretty much ignored us during the whole stay, so we didn’t feel that “great vibe” other reviewers were mentioning. No mosquito net provided! The Bathroom could use some shelfs, as the space there is very much wasted as it is. The dogs constantly mark their territory on the lounge furniture and beware not to step in their excrement, there’s a bigger pack living on the premise.

Dear Guest, We are sorry to read that you were not happy with your room. It seems like you forgot that you didn't book only one room. As we were fully booked you were also booking the lowest room category for half of your stay. Our intention was to make you happy and most comfortable without the need of changing the room that's why we offered you as a courtesy for half of your stay a free upgrade but it seems like you didn't appreciate it. Unfortunately we had an uneasy start as you ignored our official check-in time and arrived without dropping any note in the late night and usually we call this a no-show and offer rooms to other guests. When you were raising issues, also about a missing AirCon you never booked, we couldn't change anything about it as we were fully booked. Still my manager was very patient and explain you the situation, but for the rest of your stay you avoided contact with us so that we didn't get any chance to make your stay better. Sometimes what goes around, comes around and good vibes we cannot force as we usually create them together with our guests in social interactions based on positivity and gratitude, forgiveness and respect. We stayed here for a week and absolutely loved it, Anita the owner is lovely and super helpful. Khan is a brilliant chef and breakfast under the canopy every morning was superb.
Rooms are basic but nice, there are hammock swings outside the rooms which I loved.
They are located a 2 minute walk to the cliff/beach and right between some of the nicest restaurants.
I would not hesitate to come here again

I had a very good time at Mad about coco. Host and staff are very kind and the room is clean and well equipped.

Yes we offer a pickup service for 1600 INR, a little cheaper than the prepaid taxis at the airport and a much better service...a much bigger and better car and a very nice driver, who knows exactly where you wanna go...just give us at least one day in advance to organise it
