Vanya, means `Wild' and the name in itself portrays the location of our standalone Tree house. This is dedicated to those who are adventurous and would love to be up, close and personal with Mother Nature. It is located in a 10 acre hillside filled with organic plantation and gigantic trees ,adjacent to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, in Thekkady, and is the best place from where you can get a glimpse of the variety of wild animals roaming in their natural habitat. Accessible only by an uphill trek for the last kilometer, guests are taken on a 4 X 4 vehicle till the base camp. From the base camp you need to trek uphill for a kilometer to reach the drawbridge which takes you to the Tree House base. Every evening this drawbridge is folded back and then you are safe there.There are places for rest and refreshments en route for those who find the Trek tiresome. Further uphill from the tree house, you arrive at the top of the hill, which provides you a panoramic view of forests, ridges and mountains which are part of the expansive 777 sq.km. Periyar Tiger Reserve.The Tree House has a bedroom, a wash and toilet and a sit out to look out for animals that pass by. A simple, back to basics experience but with a location that rests alongside the forest cover, in a terrain about 2000 feet height from sea level. Two house staff that stays at base camp, accessible by intercom, who make and deliver your food. Please do note food served is Kerala cuisine and in home cooked style.Bookings for Vanya need to be done in advance due to the high demand from niche travelers.

At the Greenwoods resort at Kumily, which is where you check in, you are accorded a warm welcome and invited for a sumptuous lunch. Post-lunch you make your way to the resort jeep, with as little luggage as possible and get all set for a real bumpy ride to Vanya, which takes less than fifteen minutes. The jeep drops you off at what they call the waiting station, where you are met by the Vanya staff, who lead you up the hillock; a steep climb up through thick vegetation, and after a demanding trek that leaves you slightly exhausted, you are served a glass of cold lime juice and finally get to see what Vanya is all about. Nestled amidst a cardamom plantation, Vanya at the moment has a single tree house that is away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Mr. Prasad is the person who is in charge, and a two-minute conversation with him makes you feel absolutely at home. He is such a warm host, and gets us acquainted with the eco-sustainable living that Vanya promotes, even as you look around the quaintly furnished tree house in amusement. The food that they serve at Vanya is purely vegetarian, and I should admit that I have very rarely found vegetarian food taste any better. Mr. Ajin, the chef, looks quite young, but has magic on his fingers and bowls us over in no time with his snacks during teatime. The dinner is served on an open-air dinner table with lanterns lit all around, and the ambience is purely ephemeral. They light up an excellent bonfire, and you warm yourselves up after dinner, before getting ready for sleep. The next day we set out on a short trek with Mr. Prasad, who explains to us that Vanya is right on the border lines of the Periyar Tiger Reserve. I get to click a few shots with some new camera equipment and as I zoom in on the hills afar, we get to watch two red mongoose engaged in a friendly tussle. We are told that there are sightings of bison and elephants often, but it turns out that we aren't lucky that day. It also turns out that Prasad Ettan is a great conservationist and being from Kunily himself, knows everything and anything about the place. The nights get cold, and you lie under the blankets with nothing but the rustle of the wind all around, and the occasional squeaks and feet thuds on the roof of some giants squirrels that had decided to pay a visit. Its pure heaven, and if you are looking for a perfect two day get away from the chaos of it all, Vanya is the place where you should be. Prasad Ettan tells me that they have plans of expanding soon, and that more tree houses are on the way. We leave, thanking him, Ajin and Unni ettan, the local help, for the two nights that we had blissfully spent at Vanya. We promise them that we will be back for more. NB: The one suggestion that I do have, is that they could continue to offer vegetarian food, but should probably work on their menu a bit further, and include more dishes. As delicious as the food is, its only fair that the menu matches up with the tariff that is paid.…

What a wonderful experience! If you love being close to the sound and sight of nature, and don’t mind being without a few modern day accessories for a night, do this! You won’t regret it but recommend you read the Info on the website as you will need to be fit to get there. It’s so worth it! We were well looked after and cared for. Food was great and we loved sitting outside around the fire pit. We slept well and the found the sounds mesmerising. Would do this again. It was a one off and unique experience.

Our stay here was beyond our expectations. We were greeted at Greenwood Resort (an excellent hotel). We were then taken in a jeep to the remote location of the treehouse. To reach the treehouse itself, we had to trek up a hill through the forest with help from Robin and staff. This took around 15-20 mins. When we got to the top it was entirely worth it. The treehouse is clean and we weren’t bothered by insects. It was so peaceful. Robin cooked an outstanding meal for us. We slept very well. It was the most interesting place we’ve ever stayed. I’d highly recommend it to others. Be prepared for there being no running shower. The toilet in the treehouse is a squatting one. We only stayed one night which is definitely enough, before staying at Greenwoods itself. Definitely stay here if you like the outdoors. You won’t be disappointed. …

Vanya Treehouse is a one of a kind experience offered by Greenwoods Resort. The treehouse is located a little away from the city, and the hotel provides a jeep to make the trip. We have to trek about 1 k.m. uphill to reach the treehouse. The location is absolutely wonderful, and there happened to be only one Treehouse, giving the feel of exclusivity to our stay. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Their guidance during the trek to the treehouse and their presence nearby throughout the stay made everything very comfortable. The treehouse itself is a cozy place for two persons, with a brilliant view of the surroundings from the verandah. There is an old world charm to the place and the experience is that of traditional living, complete with charcoal and powdered soap and clay utensils. There is a brilliant viewpoint about 2 minutes hike away. The food deserves special mention, the green gram thoran, and the boiled tapioca tasted delicious. The candle light dinners and the entire ambience made everything very pleasant. I would recommend this place highly for people looking for a different and unique experience and willing to forego a couple of luxuries. Its really awesome trip !! We stayed in a tree house for one night on 15th Oct, enjoyed a lot living with nature smell .Special thanks to our friend Robin & Shaji.They guided us in a safe and secured path. Nearly need to trek 800m . Both sides of the path are covered with cardamon forest. On the way, we saw small water flow, black monkey and black parrot and big squirrels. On reaching vanya, they gave welcome drink with wood made utensil.Tree house take back us to ancient people living style. Balcony view from tree house was just amazing no words to express. We saw forest buffaloes and deer. Had candle light dinner and breakfast (kerala) special mouth watering dishes. Never had such a coffee in my life(Thanks to Shaji).We left the place with remembrance of a day spent. So visit this god's nature place with single tree build vanya House in forest!!!!!!…

Me and my wife stayed in Vanya Tree house on 01st Oct it was an amazing experience , we never thought that we will find such a raw Tree house inside forest ever exist. Robin and Shaji were best companions inside the forest . Both were very friendly very helpful and very prompt for our requests . Indeed they treated us like their family members .... We got best food best view , best sound of birds and rain and overall it was an amazing trip . we stayed for one night but it was like a week of experience for us . Vanya tree house is maintained clean and insects free ... Food and snacks are shared often and Do’s and Don’ts are informed us and travel experience and their guest experience were shared to us . Morning sunrise view from the top of Mountain was at his best ... we had a best of climate and we had best time together ... Robin and Shaji were very friendly and they were with us al time and made us feel very comfortable ... They explained each and everything to us and made us very comfortable and they made us very very safe deep in the forest ... They had our safety as first priority which was amazing to see ... As good as everything was perfect during our stay at the Vanya Treehouse. The two local guides did everything they can to make our stay as good as perfect. Good food, trekkings to hilltops and seeing wild buffalo, meditating on nature, the best nature shower we've ever had, a unique treehouse with an amazing view, especilly at sunrise.. if you want a trip away from it all, this is the place to go. Everything is done with nature in mind. Not to forget the friendliness of the guides... 5+star rating!
