Indhrivanam is, probably, India's a smallest special place to stay with only one stone cottage suitable for a couple or small family. We are located 10km (6 miles) from Thekkady on 1.5 Acres on the mountain ridge between Kerala and Tamil Nadu; it is a quiet and peaceful location, but ideal for local walks and the traditional tourist activities in the Thekkady/Kumily area.

We stayed for 2 nights at Indhrivanam and were really pleased with our stay. The cottage was clean and comfortable with WiFi connection, and mosquito net if you want it. It was wonderful to got to sleep and wake up to the sounds of the jungle (birds and insects- nothing dangerous). The vegan breakfast was delicious and I now have a recipe for cashew cream cheese. The hosts, Morten and Sarah, can organise tickets for trips in Periyar national park, and I believe taxis and train tickets (we had our own driver though). There are also maps for local treks available in the cottage, and the hosts are happy to accompany you if you prefer. Had we stayed longer (which we would have liked) we would have availed ourselves of this service.
All in all a wonderful break.
Thank you Mort and Sarah for your hospitality, and give Teddy and Ashna (dogs) a stroke from us

Hi Alison and Jon, Thank you for the kind review. Even though it was only for a brief moment (2 nights at Indhrivanam is rarely enough), we enjoyed meeting you. And on Teddy's behalf in particular, we would like to express the greatest gratitude: in his 15 months he has been through so much unnecessary suffering (canine distemper, living on a busy road in Tamil Nadu, being hit by a car which resulted in a badly broken leg, and general malnutrition), that even a fleeting bit of love and affection, will make a world of difference. I will forward the video recipe for our peanut butter at the earliest. Best wishes Morten

From the beautifully designed eco cottage and the attention to detail, this bed and breakfast is truely wonderful.
Sarah and Morten were most welcoming and hospitable hosts, providing delicious and nutritious meals, all vegan and home cooked.
Kumily is a beautiful part of Kerala and the cottages' location is set amidst luscious jungle abundant with flowers and birds.
All was very peaceful and private.
Highly recommended.

We loved our stay at the eco cottage. It’s beautifully and thoughtfully designed to be sensitive to the environment yet still very stylish. Morten made us very welcome and was always available to help and answer our questions. Homemade bread and spreads for breakfast were delicious! Only wish we’d had more time there!

It is no surprise that Indhrivanam is rated so high up on Trip Advisor’s list.

A friend and myself recently spent two wonderful days there. Morten and Sarah made us feel completely at home, the surroundings/landscape was magical and the home-cooked, vegan food exceptional ! (I won’t bother with the details since the other comments on Indhrivanam seem to describe things very well as regards the property and food!).

The cottage was perfect, clean and away from the main house to allow visitors privacy and a great view of the wilderness. We all spoke late until the night about the customs, culture, politics and geographies of Kerala and India. It was refreshing to hear all of this from foreigners who have decided to make Kerala their home and who are so devoted to such an ecological lifestyle.

Morten and Sarah also found us a wonderful guide, Vinu, who not only spoke perfect English, but did everything from hiking and explaining the various spice plants all the way to shopping with us to get the best bargains in town.

If not for the scenic beauty of the tea plantations of Munnar being the highlight of our trip in terms of what we saw, I would have to say that our stay at Indhrivanam was truly one of the most memorable.

I can't say enough good things about our stay at Indhrivanam!

From beginning to end we were in great hands. Morten was responsive on email as we planned our trip from the US, and when my husband and I arrived (I was 14 weeks pregnant) we were warmly greeted by Morten and Sarah who took our bags and showed us to a spectacular room (more like our own little villa, overlooking luscious woods on a mountainside)

We enjoyed a hot shower, the beautiful stone homes, gorgeous vegetation and incredibly delicious, authentic food. We also had tremendous conversations, without feeling as though we needed to hang out or were imposing - we enjoyed hearing Sarah & Morten's story, their vision for creating Indhrivanam, and the adventures they had in realizing the vision.

They were rich with knowledge of the local community. Morten's excellent walking/hiking maps were a great guide to enjoy the area, and he had thoroughly researched what were good options in terms of exploring wildlife in the reserve (and which ventures were more of a waste of money!) Sarah also led us in an interesting, very relaxing form of yoga each morning. It was a great way to start the day!

They helped us negotiate travel in India as they ensured we had a trusted driver to our next destination (in the backwaters in Kerala). Their rates were completely reasonable (indeed, less than other places we had been looking at staying)

I would highly recommend venturing to their haven in the mountains and exploring this beautiful part of India.

I've had the pleasure of staying at some soulful places, based and build around a philosophy with wonderful hosts. Indhrivanam is certainly one of them.

Morten and Sarah have created a beautiful house out of stone and sustainable material. Wow, I can picture myself in their living room having dinner, with the orange glow of the lights and wonderful conversations.

The cottage is very cosy, has alot of character and spacious. The food is fresh, healthy and yummy. While 11kms away from the city, it is still very easily accessible.

Ofcourse the greatest highlight of your stay will be Sarah and Mortens Company.

For something different do not beyond, few places like this exist. Do read their website carefully, this is an eco place to stay with dry toilets.

Indhrivanam may not be for everyone, but more for the people that REALLY want to be there.

Indhrivanam was the most special place we stayed in India -- it was wonderful and unique.

The stone cottage is the centerpiece of this experience. Morten and Sarah have put so much time and thought into this structure, and it shows. Even during the heat of the day, there is no need for air conditioning or a fan. It was impeccably clean and thoughtfully designed, and truly felt like a home away from home. (It also helped to have great wireless Internet, games (like carom and scrabble), and a very friendly dog, Ashna.)

As tempting as it was to stay in the cottage all day, Morten and Sarah helped us plan excursions with laminated information cards and maps that sketch out everything from local hikes to a map of the nearby town of Kumily (listing martial arts performances, yoga, the tiger preserve, local restaurants, and general necessities like chemists). What's even better is that they can guide you toward the experiences that are better and worse, based on feedback from prior guests.

Most of all, though, the people make Indhrivanam special. Sarah and Morton are especially warm and have a great sense of humor. They (and their employee Raju) cook amazing and creative vegetarian/vegan meals, ranging from kerala specialities (like appam and chana curries) to home-baked bread and homemade peanut butter -- and they eat alongside their guests and entertain. They make it feel like going to meals with friends.

We only stayed two nights, but we were tempted to stay another day because we loved it so much. (In retrospect, we enjoyed it a lot more than the houseboat we hit afterwards.)

Morten and Sarah also arranged a really great driver to take us from Kochi and back to Allepuzzha. (Our only advice -- Kumily is up a mountain (one reason why the area is so nice), but driving their requires a stretch of India's famous hairpin turns. If you're prone to motion sickness -- or even if not -- you may want to pack a few dramamine tablets -- which worked wonders for us.)

All in all, we were sad to leave so soon, and hope we'll have the chance to go back again.

We were really looking forward to our stop with Morten and Sarah at their ecologically-sound cottage in the hills over kumily, and were not disappointed when we arrived. They made us feel welcome immediately, showing us around the cottage and the ins and outs of the dry toilet, electric shower with HOT water and free wi-fi, before walking up to their own home for one of many wonderful vegan keralan meals shared with the couple.

Our stay here was just so easy and relaxing. It was one of the only places we were able to pay for in advance, and they were keen to help with any queries we had about local travel, and recommended good places to eat and visit. Morten also booked us onto the 'tiger trail' at the Periyar national park, on our request before our arrival. This trail was not for the faint hearted, with lots of walking and a camp in the middle of a lake. However, if you can get on it, we recommend it for the views alone. It's unlikely you'll see any tigers, but we saw plenty of other wildlife and the guides were amazing.

Sarah and Morten have managed to create a wonderful balance between home-stay and hotel; we had the privacy to spend a whole day relaxing in the cottage on our own if we wanted, with the freedom to bother them with any stupid question we had about bus times. We also shared a very similar sense of humour with the couple and felt really bad after keeping them up chatting each night after the wonderful dinner Sarah cooked us.

We couldn't recommend this cottage more. For the food alone they could charge twice the current rate (their homemade peanut butter for breakfast was a real treat) The environmentally friendly way in which they run both their own home and the cottage is wonderful. The cottage itself is spacious yet cosy, with everything you need including the ONLY sprung mattresses we had in India (we certainly missed it when we moved on!). The forest is literally right on your doorstep, with a bus stop to take you down to Kumily at the end of the road.

All our best to Sarah and Morten, and Ashna their lovely dog!
Highly recommended.

As a couple, my husband and I have always been veered towards destinations that involve a large dose of forests, wilderness and nature. While exploring the places to stay in the vicinity of Periyar tiger reserve, we came across this heavenly place, Indhrivanam. Our stay, including our daughter, was of 3 days and 3 nights.

About Indhrivanam, I do know that it will feature in my conversations about hospitality and homestays till the end of my very being! Full credit goes to the hosts, Sarah and Morten who have carefully and thoughtfully managed the place.

A few highlights that stood out have been….

Foooood: As a family, we unanimously voted that the food was amazing. And what took the cake literally was the vegan vanilla lemon zest birthday cake presented to us at 6.30am!!!! Cutting the birthday cake this early in the morning was a very memorable experience for me not to mention the fact that the cake was finger licking good. Food was a delicious affair all through, Sarah has been so meticulous in the way food was delivered and served to us in huge steel drums hung right outside the guest cottage, that the sight of it’s arrival would make my daughter delightfully scramble to unpack and discover the contents. Being vegetarians, the food perfectly suited our palate :-)

Atmosphere: Nestled away from Kumily town, the place offers lush green cover replete with local flowering plants, shrubs and trees. Its a pleasure to sit on the porch, soak in the air and hear the birds. For anyone keen on seeing the surroundings at a closer distance, there was a pair of binoculars thoughtfully kept in the cottage. An added delight was the birthday song sung by my favourite bird the Malabar whistling thrush early morning, ahhh Mother Nature!

Cottage: This one is built with stone walls with beautiful doors and collapsible windows made of wood and glass. The temperature in the cottage was always ambient and pleasant. The attached bathroom is environment friendly that has been designed to compost human waste using saw dust. Surprisingly despite the cottage being located in the middle of thick green cover, there were no mosquitoes and creepy crawlies barely made their presence felt. We did notice that our hosts had taken care of ensuring that insects like ants were redirected away from the cottage with some eco friendly solutions. Overall the cottage was very comfortable, neat and cozy in accommodating our family of 3 adults.

Hospitality: We had some very interesting conversations with Sarah, Morten, Teddy and Maya. We had plenty to talk about and it felt that we needed a few more visits to talk some more! We received plenty of pointers and information from them on what we could explore in the duration of our stay. We learnt about their incredible experience in India, we marvelled at their gumption and we surely appreciated their kindness.

We are back to our regular life and the stressors however all we need to do is just close our eyes and go over our stay at Indhrivanam in our minds eye and that momentarily refreshes us.

Thank you so much Sarah and Morten for the incredible experience!

Have you ever been to a place you wanted to gate-keep and rave about in the same breadth? Indhrivanam is such a place for me. I would love for others to experience the beauty of the forest and the peace that comes with it. At the same time, I wouldn't want entitled, fussy tourists to go there (Sarah and Morten are the kindest, sweetest hosts and do not deserve icky guests!!)

I spent 17 days at Indhrivanam from late May 2023, and am likely their longest staying guest till date. I did not want to leave, and long to be back. Throughout my stay in the beautiful stone cottage (artfully designed and built by Morten and Sarah), I was thoroughly pampered and taken care of. I felt genuine warmth and a strong sense of kinship with them. I struggle to find apt words to express my gratitude for all that they have done for me.

I was writing my doctoral thesis whilst at Indhrivanam. The conversations with Morten and Sarah - about animals, environment, love, life, purpose, and the everyday (not so mundane) - were thought-provoking. In all likelihood, they kept me sane. As I learnt about how their lifestyle, I felt inspired to break free from the rat race and live differently. Their little world gives me hope.

With respect to the stay itself, Sarah is a true vegan culinary wizard. She prepared the most scrumptious vegan Kerala food and the best pasta ever!! Everything was veggie centric (which I love) and so delicately spiced. Sarah also very kindly made me special baked treats - from cinnammon buns to scruffins to homemade pizza. Cooking and cleaning day after day is not an easy task, more so when caring for a puppy. But, Sarah was an absolute star. Besides the food, I enjoyed my meals with Sarah and Morten. I loved hearing about their lives, and am particularly fond of Morten's sense of humour - this is so rare! :) Morten also patiently dealt with my mini electronic crises - he has many (hidden) talents.

I did not leave the property (barring once) in all of my stay. This was due to the unparallelled beauty of their property, their vegan food, and their much cherished company. The adorable doggies Ashna, Teddy, and Maya also visited me from time to time. Maya the puppy brought me so much joy with her scampering about every morning.

If you are a solo-female (vegan) traveller looking to explore Kerala or seeking peace, Indhrivanam would be a perfect getaway. There are some creepy crawlies, a plethora of birds, apart from the doggos - please do not attempt to go if you cannot peacefully co-exist and are disruptive.

Hi Allison and Jon, Thank you for the message. You may also send an email. We usually respond very quickly. All three activities should be possible to do. We recommend the half-day rafting over the full-day rafting, not only because it leaves you more time for anything else you may want to do, but also because because the full-day rafting is excessive on the rafting: it is several hours on the water in the sun. At this time of the year, the skies are usually clear and the sun strong, so spending several hours in the sun isn't recommended. The half-day rafting is from 07:30 till 12:30 and from 09:30 till 14:30. If you let me know the preferred timing, I can buy tickets in advance. The early one has the advantage of being done in slightly cooler conditions with a marginally higher chance of spotting wildlife. Downside is that you have to get up at little after 6 o'clock in the morning. The 09:30 avoids the downside of the early start, and that is, for some people, a much better start to the day. If your preferred time is booked, I will attempt the other one. Tickets are, I think, INR 3600 for 2 people. Tickets are non-refundable. If you prefer the full-day rafting, I will, of course, be happy to buy these instead. It is INR 4800 for 2 people. The timing is from 08:00 till 17:00. Kathakali tickets are bought on the day of the activity. They won't sell out. There are plenty of totally free local walks in our locality. We have made maps of these, which are easy to follow. Best wishes, Morten

Hi Deepak, Thank you for wanting to stay at Indhrivanam, and an interesting opportunity for corresponding via Tripadvisor. There is a first for everything! Periyar Tiger Reserve: for a light experience, Nature Walk is recommended, and it is, realistically, your only option as you don't have a full day here (most of the longer and more interesting activities in PTR are full-day activities starting early in the morning). The last Nature Walk of day starts at 14:30. 5-6 km walk. Duration of 2:30 hours. Ideally, check to book tickets in advance at Periyar Foundation. Some people refer to the Jeep Tour as a Jeep Safari. It is definitely not a safari, and the terminology is misleading. The jeep goes between 4-5 different viewpoint via public asphalt roads. That is it. We don't recommend it. Instead, if you are really into walking, you can do a local walk. We are ideally located for local walks of up to 20 kilometres along the mountain ridge that separates Kerala and Tamil Nadu, weather conditions permitting. This is much more interesting and scenic, and it doesn't feel as touristy as a jeep tour. And it is free. If you are interested in an elephant ride, please use the services of Elephant Junction as conditions are better for the elephants there than anywhere else. We usually recommend visiting Abraham's Spice Garden for a unique introductory tour to South Indian spices. Most of the other spice gardens are pretty poor with only one purpose: selling spices. If you want to buy spices there are very good spice shops in Kumily Town on the main road, for instance Lord's Spices and the more down to earth Hilltop Spices. That said, this is without know you at all. So, your preferences may be different. October, by the way, is when winter is approaching. It will be cool in the high ranges of Kerala with temperatures going below 20C in the evening. Therefore, one or two warmer pieces of clothes are useful. Please also note that for activities in PTR you need shoes or, at least, semi-closed sandals, and clothes that makes you 'blend into' the surroundings. For instance, yellow and red will almost certainly see you dismissed at the entrance! Best, Morten
