I loved our stay at Akkara - a home away from home . It was relaxing , refreshing and rejuvenating . Meeting the owner of the property , Shatha ,was a treat and her mother just added to the whole experience . Freshly cooked authentic Syrian Christian cuisine was delicious. The ayurvedic treatment is highly recommended.

If you're looking for a special place to stay in central Kerala, Akkara Homestay is the place you need. I have just spent 5 nights there (June 21- 26, 2019) and I definitely would recommend this place to anyone trying to escape the madness and pollution of Kottayam town. The house is a genuine 200 year old traditional Kerala house, beautifully maintained. The rooms are spacious, well-kept, with beautiful teak furniture. The bathroom is the traditional south Indian bath, kept perfectly clean. The small houses are built around a peaceful yard, close to the Meenachil River. There is an Ayurvedic doctor available, offering a while range of treatments, massages or panchakarma. The landlady is a very friendly lady who can prepare for you delicious south Indian food (I will remember for long the fantastic beef curry she cooked for me). The staff is friendly and helpful, always ready to help or advise you. All this for a very reasonable price. I have stayed several times in recent years in other hotels of Kottayam, but this homestay is way better than anything you can find in town.

We stayed at Akkara Homestay for 4 nights and had a brilliant experience. The rooms were huge and very clean. Santha, the home owner, is such a lovely lady who loves welcoming people into her home. The grounds are beautiful and her and Manoj (the manager) are happy to arrange all sorts of excursions for you. We had all of our meals there and the food was exceptional! Would recommend to anyone wanting to relax for a while.

Last week we were in Kerala and Akkara was our one night stop in Kottayam. I haven't seen such a well preserved home in India. The place is straight out of a coffee table book on heritage homes. The old world charm is spellbinding. While Shantha auntie had to go for some family engagement; the caretaker Manoj and his family took good care of us. The food at this homestay is delicious and has a local flavour. The coffee is great too! The rooms are very spacious and comfortable and we had a good night sleep. Situated just outside of Kottayam town in the village of Ayemenem ( apparently, the village where 'The God of Small Things' is set), the house is bang on the river Meenachil. We manage to go on a boat ride. Though because of monsoons, the river was a bit dirty but still, it was enjoyable. Manoj even arranged an early morning boat ride & birding trip for us at Kumarakom. Kumarakom is just 30 min away and you can go there for a lunch at the Taj or KLR. This homestay is ideal for people looking for peace and a digital detox. It has an Ayurveda centre. Though we did not get the time to experience it; it sure looked very traditional and tempting!

This is a beautiful peaceful location in a gracious and extensive family house. The accommodation is excellent - clean, spacious and quiet. Manoj and his family cared for us and provided many fascinating experiences, which included visiting the 13th century churches, an ancient mosque, and an Orthodox seminary. The highlight of our stay was to be taken to the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary before dawn where we were treated to an amazing bird watching experience from a canoe with a wonderful knowledgeable guide.

We had the pleasure of staying here on the recommendation of a friend who comes from the area. If you want a day or two to get a taste of the past then look no further. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the busy streets is Akkara. A 200 year old house that exudes a sense of peace and calm. Open and airey, the house is a reminder of days gone by. The bedrooms are huge and have everything you will need. If you want modern and shiny new then this is not the place for you. Shantha the owner is wonderful to talk to if you take the time and she will happily chat away to you over dinner and tell you all about her family and the history of the house. The food was excellent.! Manouj the property manager is so friendly and helpful. We went for a morning paddle in a canoe down the canal which runs from the bottom of the garden. The birdlife was wonderful. We also had a massage on the premises which was just lovely. It was a real privilege to stay and would live to go back one day soon.

Akkara is 200 year old house well maintained and converted to a home stay and Ayurveda center. We stayed here as a group of 10. Tucked away into lush greenery and by the banks of Meenachil River, it is an ideal get away. Since it serves also as an Ayurveda center, they offer a lot of massages as well as treatment. Rooms are large and airy. The surroundings are well maintained.

Stayed here with my friends. The house is really beautiful and blessed with natural beauty. However very bad in hospitality. The house lady clearly said that the stay is only open for foreigners and not for Indians. This biasness is very much visible in all the activities. This attitude in fact ruined our stay there. The AC was not working in the first day and there was no room service and breakfast which was provided. In fact over priced, and the location is too inside from the mainland.

This is a beautiful peaceful place to stay, the rooms are clean and comfortable and the food is really tasty. The hostess is very friendly, there are all kinds of ayurvedic treatments available on site. Plenty of books to read, and outdoor areas for lounging... a perfect place to relax for a couple of days.

I must start by saying how well we were looked after by our host, Manoj. Even though the lady of the house, Shantha, was away herself, Manoj was a superb and delightful host. We had many interesting conversations with him and he was always there to see to our ever need. The house itself is like staying in a National Trust property- beautifully proportioned and retaining original fittings and fitments. The rooms are very spacious and comfortable and we had some of our most peaceful nights. Situated just outside of Kottayam town in the village of Ayemenem (for book lovers- this is the village where 'The God of Small Things' is set), the house backs on to the river and has its own garden full of fruits and spices, which end up on your plate! Our cook, Poinama, provided traditional Keralan feasts every lunch and dinner- this was a real highlight. Afternoon tea is served daily which suited us Brits!
