At the heart of ancient Fort Cochin, Kerala, a place that exudes history and culture, is the 'Old Harbour Hotel.' A 300 year-old building that has for long been a heritage monument of this town, now reopened as a boutique hotel. Built in the Dutch style of architecture with hints of Portuguese influences, it was the first hotel of old Cochin. Later it remained a residential home to employees of English Tea broking firms until it was left unused for a period of time.

The hotel is set in the perfect location to explore Fort Kochi and it's a lovely old building set in beautiful gardens. Our room opened up into the gardens which was lovely. The staff were helpful and attentive. I've traveled extensively around Asia and stayed in some wonderful places. In Kerala we stayed elsewhere in a beautiful beach bungalow with perfect wifi, a large bed, walk in wardrobe, TV with Netflix, veranda with seating, set in gorgeous gardens and just 1 min walk to the beach and all for 1500rp (approx £15) per night so we had high hopes for this hotel and were excited to see something so swish but we were sadly disappointed. The room was very tired looking, shabby and really smelt of mould. The walls were damp, the mattress mouldy and the sheets, towels and dressing gowns were also damp and had seen better days. The bathroom walls were cracking and were in need of some TLC. There were several cockroaches running around the bedroom and bathroom. The wifi was intermittent in the rooms so most guests, including us, had to sit in the reception to get a good signal. The air conditioning worked but the remote didn't so we couldn't adapt the temperature or turn it off. There was a "mini bar" with one lonely bottle of Kingfisher. Where were the others? At £300 a night some soft drinks would have been a lovely touch. But alas the fridge was practically empty, covered in grime and in need of a good scrub. The traditional Indian folk music in the garden on the evening was really fabulous but the following night, once we'd checked out, we could hear an awful cover artist blasting across Kochi. This would ruin the tranquil experience for me, be warned. We were unable to make a cup of tea as the plug for the kettle didn't fit the socket or any adapters. Nor could we have a pre breakfast swim as the pool was filthy. Later on after breakfast I asked for the pool to be cleaned so I could use it, I'm not sure this would have been done if I hadn't asked. We would have loved to have sat on the veranda with our cup of tea (if we could have made one) but we didn't have a table and chairs to enjoy the garden view. I was looking forward to my first hotel breakfast of the holiday. Until now we'd stayed in fabulous homestays where the breakfasts had been delicious and plentiful. This was a fancy hotel, at £300 a night, so breakfast was sure to be OUTSTANDING! Again, we were disappointed. The service was ok but they forgot my husband's pancake so had to be reminded. The coffee was good but the muesli, yoghurt and fruit was inedible and the watermelon juice was out of a carton…..why not fresh like everywhere else?! My husband said the pancakes were fine….”they filled a hole”…not the experience we were hoping for. This hotel was an incredibly expensive and disappointing experience. We wouldn't normally spend this amount of money on a bed for a night so this was a first for us and we were expecting perfection at such a cost. I'm confused as to how the reviews can be so good, others surely must have noticed these issues? I can only assume the reviews are fake or the guests have more money than sense. This hotel is in a top location in Fort Kochi and it's catering for western tourists so for that you're paying a premium. Is it worth the money? Absolutely not! The owners of this hotel are taking advantage of western tourists who don't know better. They're not investing the exuberant fees back into this historic building and they don't care one bit about their customers. Personally I'll stick with my tip top homestays, socialise with the local people and give back to the communities. This is where you get to experience the kind and genuine people that India has to offer.

This is one of the most charming Hotels I have ever stayed at. Splurge on a suite or a garden room. The staff is so friendly and funny and will organize everything for you. Can easily be booked directly. The garden is wonderful and the restaurant is excellent. The house pets keep the possible critters away are clean and friendly.

I loved my two nights at Old Harbour Hotel, Kochi. Such a beautiful place in a great location. The staff were lovely (big shout-out to Jude, Suresh and Surella - sorry if I've missed anyone or misspelt names!). My room was fabulous and I loved the lush garden, swimming in the pool and the local yoga classes. I ate at the hotel on both evenings and the food was amazing. I can highly recommend the Iranian King Prawns and the Kerala Fish Curry! I would love to stay again.

We stayed at Old Harbour for a wedding of some close friends, this place is gorgeous! The rooms are stunning and the entire hotel really shows the historic charm of the buildings heritage beauty. The staff are absolutely amazing, so attentive and detailed with the room service. The food in the restaurant is superb, I thoroughly enjoyed the Dhal Cutlets and we loved our Masala Dosas for breakfast. they also had the best wine/wine list we found in Fort Kochi. The pool is lovely and relaxing and they offer in house massage treatments. The owners wife runs a Vegan Cafe and Yoga Studio Loving Earth which we checked out and although we are not vegan the food was incredible especially the pizzas and it’s easy walking distance to not only Loving Earth but another sister property Kashi Art. Thank you again to Edgar,Jude and the rest of the Old Harbour Team we will never forget our stay and will definitely be back

A truly wonderful place to stay. Stunning building and grounds renovated to perfection - but the thing which makes this hotel so special are the staff. They genuinely could not do enough for us and made us feel looked after from the moment we stepped in to the building to the moment we left. Superb level of service - warm, friendly and welcoming.

A tranquille haven, perfectly located in the centre of Fort Kochi. A beautiful old building with antique furniture throughout yet with comfortable mod cons, a beautiful garden, nice pool, friendly helpful staff and delicious food. Dinner in the garden is lovely. Really recommend it as a base in Cochin.

Really good location in the centre of Fort Cochi, so the main sights are easily walkable. Rooms were generally good, although a couple of our party struggled with the outside showers in the rain. We also had a late night problem with leaking air con. However, these things happen and the staff were very attentive and the manager gave us a discount, which we passed to the staff. Breakfast and dinner were very good. We really liked the local breakfast options and I enjoyed both my dinners - seafood soup and fish curry/beef pepper fry and seared fish. The staff (and Happy the dog!!) were friendly and helpful, with lots of nice touches - petals in room, turn down service etc.

This was the first hotel on our two week tour of Kerala and was a lovely place to rest after a long flight. We had a cottage room near the pool which was lovely, and we loved the food and location. The best part was the welcoming staff who were so friendly and nothing was too much trouble. I would highly recommend staying here

The loveliest hotel with the most amazing team who couldn’t do more to take care of us! They were amazing with our toddler who loved walking around high fiving them all. The whole place retains its original charm but has some amazing quirky antique pieces dotted about. The pool area was really nice and lots of well kept garden and greenery. We booked one of the suites for 7 days as we had our young child with us and it was the biggest room we’ve ever stayed in with a separate area we could put her in to sleep - it was great! One thing I would mention is the accomodation cannot offer a baby travel cot so you will need to bring your own. We had the best stay and will have lovely memories of our time getting to know the area and the wonderful staff at this hotel.
