I initially only booked 4 nights at this hotel, but I loved it so much that I extended my stay to 8 nights! I cannot fault this hotel- gorgeous, spacious room, lovely peaceful swimming pool and the staff were so friendly, helpful and attentive at all times. I ate in the restaurant on countless occasions during my stay, trying a new dish every time. Each meal was absolutely delicious- fresh and flavoursome. As a solo female traveller, it’s important for me to feel safe and I did at all times at the Killians. I felt that the staff really looked out for me- the security guard would even wave every time I went out and came back in! I’ve been lucky enough to visit over 50 countries and the Killians is up there with one of the loveliest hotels I’ve stayed in for this price bracket. I wouldn’t hesitate in coming back in the future.

The hotel is in a good position for the ferry and walking around the area. However, we found our stay to be very disappointing. The room was old, it had a bad smell and was very dark. Our door was difficult to open and close, only a few numbers worked on the safe keypad. The Wifi kept dropping out, no smoke detector in the room- see photo. Horrible view from window, despite receptionist telling us the room was the best they have- see photo. Just us in the restaurant and it took 30 minutes for a basic cup of coffee to arrive. The restaurant was depressing- no wonder it was empty ! When the breakfast did finally show up- 30 minutes after ordering- it was cold! No toiletries at all- we asked for some and got one tiny bottle- see photo's. The lady that works on the reception was rude and unhelpful. She thought it was really funny when we complained about breakfast. No one to help with bags etc.,. when we checked out. Will never recommend or return.

This is not a boutique hotel and the name is totally misleading. I would categorize this as an average three star hotel and too expensive for what you get. Rooms are no-frill and rather dark but at least spacious. The interior design is simple with old wooden furniture. No minibar. Breakfast is basic and doest no have a lot of choices and if you do not go early then the food will be cold. The breakfast hall is also dark and uninviting. There is a small pool but only few hours of sunshine. The only positive thing about the place really is its location just opposite the river in the heart of Fort Kochi.

Great location, friendly staff, good size clean rooms. Usual Indian Fayre for breakfast but coffee, tea, cooked eggs, toast, butter and jam were available as an alternative. Staff forgot to tell us there was an immersion heater so shower water was cold on the first morning. Wifi was good.

The physical infrastructure, or HARDWARE, is undoubtably excellent. The hotel is located on the picturesque River Road, close to landmarks like Santa Cruz Basilica and Bastion Bungalow. Numerous restaurants, shops, cultural centres, the ferry station and Fort Kochi bus stand are within walking distance. Aspinwall, the main venue for the Kochi Muziris Biennale, is just a stone’s throw away. Killian’s hotel is built in a U shape with a small swimming pool in the courtyard. There is a restaurant on the ground floor, with a total of 22 rooms spread over the first, second and third floors. Although this hotel is located on a busy street, there is sufficient space within the property for parking a dozen cars. Our family group occupied two rooms on the first floor, which were quite spacious and well furnished. Brown ceramic floor tiles and natural lighting imparted a warm ambience to our rooms. As for furniture, there were twin beds, a study table with a chair and a round table with a pair of elegantly shaped wooden armchairs with cane weaving. The only shortcoming of the room was that the illumination was insufficient at night. The bathroom was quite spacious and it had natural lighting. The toiletries were unbranded, but their quality was fairly good. The only drawback was that the water tasted saline. The services, or SOFTWARE, left much scope for improvement. I do not intend to nitpick, but a few examples will suffice. I had booked two rooms from 26th to 30th Jan through booking.com and it was said that the amount would be charged to my credit card on arrival at the hotel. Further, the confirmation clearly stated that free cancellation was available till 2359hrs on 18th Jan. Yet I got an email from the hotel late on the evening of 14th Jan, asking me to pay the booking amount by 4pm on 15th Jan, failing which they would be “forced to cancel the booking”. I phoned the hotel and spoke to Mr Chandan who consented to investigate this unsavoury email, but I did not hear from the hotel again – though mercifully they did not carry out their threat to cancel the booking. Breakfast was not included in our package, but we did consider eating at Lilly Grace Restaurant. The spread was disappointing and not worth Rs. 500 + taxes. The Room service also offered quite a limited menu. Killian’s seems quite stingy about low value consumables like water bottles and tea bags, which are liberally provided by other hotels of this standard. On the first morning, we had asked for two additional bottles of water (on payment, of course) since we had finished the original two bottles provided by them. Later, when the room was cleaned, they did not consider it necessary to give us fresh bottles, since they saw two bottles in the room! Tea bags, milk sachets, sugar packets and coffee sachets were jumbled in a jar with a small mouth. If any of them were consumed, they were not replaced during the daily cleaning. On the last day I requested a late check out for one room since our flight was in the evening. The receptionist said that she had to speak to the manager. After making me wait for several minutes, she said that we could keep one room till noon. According to our booking, the check out time was noon for both the rooms! The reason given for refusing my request for late checkout was that they were fully booked. This seems highly unlikely, considering that it we were checking out on a Monday (that morning, the occupancy was so low that the usual buffet breakfast had been cancelled). We checked out at noon and left three bags at the counter. When we came to collect them a few hours later, my son picked up two of them and I picked up the third one. Two young male employees of the hotel, who were lounging at the reception, watched us carrying our bags and did not offer any help. To conclude, the software does not match the hardware – and it needs to be upgraded soon. If Killian’s employees persist with such customer-unfriendly attitudes, I am afraid that this hotel will not be able to survive for very long in a competitive world.
