We were travelling with our 2 year old daughter in the winters of December AND in the Covid times. So naturally we were worried about our safety, general hygiene of the place we stay in and room heating facilities. Despite the mixed reviews, we decided to give Centaur a try, primarily for the location.

We were in for a surprise.. the hotel exceeded our expectations. They REALLY took care of us.
The hotel, although old and under-maintained has the old school rustich charm to it
It is huge and adorned with beautiful Kashmiri handicrafts. Food is decent too. Staff is very courteous and polite.

And about the safety, it is inside the SKICC conference centre which is heavily guarded by the army- be rest assured of staying in one of the safest hotels in Srinagar.

We initially stayed a night before moving for Gulmarg & Pahalgam but decided to come back to the same room upon our return to Srinagar.

I highly recommend this hotel if you would love to take a stroll around the Dal Lake on a quiet evening; and maybe a nap in the beautiful garden frome where you see the lotuses blooming.

Hotel is a 30 min drive from the airport, but is located away from the crowded city center, but close to most attractions. The place is very clean and the service is good. It is very affordable compared to the 5-stars nearby, so offers great value for money. The rooms are dated, but comfortable and well maintained.

Entering the hotel, you will feel like you have entered a different era. And I am not saying that in a good way. Just look at the phone that they have in the toilet. The taps are leaking. You can't even open them sometimes. It leaves you in a dilemma because try too much and the thing will break. Try too less and don't get to use the tap. I chose the latter in case you are wondering. The lady at the reception told me "room accha hai". agar yeh accha room hai toh "ok ok" room kaisa hoga. I don't want to have nightmares so let's not dwell too much on that question.

But their restaurant puts even their shoddy reception to shame. My wife called the room service to get the food menu. you call on 82 and they ask you to call 81. You call 81 and they ask you to call 82. We never found the menu nor did we find whose jurisdiction does the task of finding the menu falls in. So we decided to directly head to the restaurant. They only had a buffet with three curries and rice. This is the first time that I saw gheeya ki sabji in a buffet. There was no other food item available. If you want ala carte, you just pick whatever is in the buffet. And there was not much in the buffet. There was literally just one staff member serving everyone. So instead of getting the water from him, I just went to my room, picked up the water bottle, and continued with the dinner.

Later some locals told me that this property is government-managed. So that explains everything. You don't want into a SBI branch expecting the treatment of an ICICI branch. No matter how much of a big home loan you are taking.

I stayed at Centaur hotel in the month of February to my surprise the property was huge with beautiful view of Dal lake from all three sides . The room I stayed had a beautiful view of Dal and mountain on the other side. The property has a old world charm with huge lobby and a beautiful coffee shop . The location is very good and all tourist destinations are nearby . The food and service is great . The staff was very courteous.

Its indeed very sad when such a fine property with unmatched location is in shambles. There is virtually no maintenance which is evident is broken sofas, messy bathrooms and pathetic linen. There are stray dogs all over so one has to be very careful strolling in the gardens.
To add to your woes you can go as part of Make My Trip package where they dish out some horrible food which could comprise of watery dal, sad vegetable dishes & tasteless chicken dishes. If that's doesn't dissatisfy you the uncooked gulab jamuns sure will. The service staff is very indifferent with no uniform and offer you papads in a corrugated carton. At the end of it a giant 'tip box' is displayed if you still feel generous.
For the not so generous you can join various other protestors who are subjected to this 'one hell of a paradise'.

What a waste of resources one of the best lake side location adjacent to a fine SKICC conversation centre stone throw away distance from golf course but but good things end just here . pathetic staff n services horrible food dirty dingy deserted lifeless rooms and a hefty price . What you should get for 2000 rs per day you get for about 5 to 6000. A cup of tea is 120 rs . But its a government owned hotel so should i be saying any thing else . Being run like railways or roadways or state highways. Rooms are small smelly linen dirty, dust all over furniture , age old picture tube tv sets which take an eternity to switch on and change channels . Washbasins clogged . Hotel has a deserted look and you would feel like living in a haunted house in evvening . All in all avoid even if you get a free stay . I payed for 2 nights and ran out of the hotel in couple of hours

Sometimes we get some very good properties at a a very reasonable rate.Hotel Centaur Lake view is one of them.Though the maintenance may not be up to the expectation of many people,we and our group liked the Hotel very much.We were as if in 'a palace of a poor king'.At this low price we all loved it very much not because of it's interiors or service but for the large rooms, good food and the location. For the location I would like to give 9/10.It is a pity that we are wasting such a good property in a prime location.I would like our friends from India and abroad to visit this place.Though they were renovating at that time,I still feel you will be very happy with your family and friends. The staff I must say were very helpful and good.Just walk out of your room and you are in the midst of the beautiful nature welcoming you with open arms. You will just like this great place.

just gone through review.. what about cleanliness and odour in carpets n bedding
Mumbai, India545 contributions60 helpful votes
As this is a hotel sparsely occupied and run for primarily Air India staff the cleanliness & hygiene is mediocre. Don’t expect too much as it’s running in losses.
